I'm sorry, but I don't like this idea at all. It takes away from the hits and visits that the artist would have otherwise recieved. Not only that, but the viewers don't get all of the other information that the artist provides (cast info, artist info, personal links, archives, etc.).
Two thumbs down.
- James
------------------

I have had several websites approach me about displaying my strip on their sites as "tooncasting"- There is a comic online called Astounding Space thrills that does this.-- I figure it is some sort of JavaScript because it allows for the site to simply paste the HTML code in and then automatically it brings up the latest installemnt of your strip.-
Is there a way to do this through Keenspace?- and if not, it might be somehting worth looking into. I know a few major sites that would be interested in displaying comics on their comics pages and index pages, and it might be worth it to have some Keen strips featured this way and mass distributed across the net. YOu can see an example of this at http://www.astoundingspacethrills.com - His frame has link buttons and stuff like that in it, and tiny ads for other strips!- This could be great if we had some keen strips this way.--any thoughts?
------------------

I think it has merit. To use one of those ramshackle newspaper metaphors: creating your own wacky zine that's 100% you and your view on the world and distributing to 100 people is great but having your comic published in the NY Times is great too, in another way.
The people reading your comic on that other site will very likely never have heard of it before (especially if we're talking about a non-cartoons site). A lot of them will check out your site if they like your comics (to read the archive, find out more about the cast, etc). That's a lot of visitors who would never have even know it existed otherwise. If your comic site is solid, most of them even will start coming to it, instead of reading your comic at the other place.
This 'tooncasting' is only really worth it if the other site is a non-comics site I think. If Ghostz wasn't updated so on the fly by me, I'd have looked into being tooncasted on some of the emulation sites out there already. I'm pretty sure it would've worked since I almost got hosted by one before Keenspace came around. All those people reading your comic there aren't stealing hits or visits for the simple reason that they wouldn't have known about you and thus not have visited you anyways if it weren't for the tooncasted cartoons.
The only problem would be if you're aiming for lots of Keenspace pageviews to get some money. But unless you're huge, the money coming from pageviews won't buy you much more than some chewing gum. If you're worrying about hits, it probably woulnd't be too hard to come to some agreement with the site that wants to tooncast you, to have them use an image on your keenspace account, so your hits and visits would still match up.
------------------

I've been kinda experimenting with this since November, when a weird-newsy-type site called http://www.blacklung.org contacted me about using Chopping Block as part of their content. It's a well-done site, though it seems to be pretty low-traffic right now.
Instead of a script, they just put an image tag in there to pull from my geocities account, and I upload my comic there myself. That way, I can run the comic a day or two behind (Keen doesn't care about us running our comic the same day elsewhere, but it would violate a KeenSPOT contract, and y'know, I got aspirations...), plus it doesn't skew my hits since it doesn't pull from my real site. They link back to me.
I get a few dozen hits from them per month, so far. Nothing big, but you never know. They could take off. Fun experiment anyway.
---Lee
------------------

Wow, two thumbs down!- yikes!- Well I have to stay on the "rational" side and believe that the more outlets you have for your strip, the better. Believe me, not everyone coming to your site is scanning through all the character pages and extra junk we put on there to make ourselves feel superior before we go to bed at night.
Let's look at it like Einstien would. Ok, so you have a site and YOU don't do anything like this idea and you only get viewers that you fish out through e-mail and a few banner ads. And perhaps a meesily dropdown. SO it would be silly to NOT try something like this and NOT gain any new hits or readership from it.-
and Bonk said:
"It takes away from the hits and visits that the artist would have otherwise recieved. Not only that, but the viewers don't get all of the other information that the artist provides (cast info, artist info, personal links, archives, etc.)."
ERRRRRRNTTTT! Wrong answer...Actually if you NEVER did this then you would have NEVER had those people stumble across your site in the first place. See? It simply is an extra outlet to generate interest in your strip, and like the other fellas said, if they like your strip enough, then they may hit the little navigator button in the script and come to see more. That's a bonus!- And if no one is clicking the strip at all, it's a pretty good bet that your strip isn't appealing enough or professional looking to catch interest, so back to the drawing board for those guys
-SO in summary you don't lose anything by doing a system like this, you gain an extra outlet in remote places of the net.-
------------------

Absolutely your own choice ... my only objection is to sites that do this without the permission of the creators. It would be incredibly easy to do this with no complicated script or anything ... has been done before.
------------------

Holy huzzah... I thought I'd get some back up on this one.
I do see where everyone else is coming from, and after reading the other comments made, I have re-thought my original post. I do see the advantages to having this, but I personally still not want to do it.
To each his own, I guess.
- Bonk
