I sort of started Droll Street on short notice, and I've never really felt it's an example of my best work. Web-cartooning is fun, but sometimes is hard. I've been short-on time latley, and have been pondering this well... Does Droll Street deserve to keep on going? Something inside tells me yes, while another part tells me if I were to stop Droll Street, I could come back with an even better strip. If any fans, non-fans, friends or enemies could respond to this post with encouragement or dis-encouragement I would be happy. Thanks!
------------------

Should I dis-continue my comic?

When I's toying with the idea of doing another strip, one thing that helped me was to put my ideas down on paper - I got an old school book and just started drawing strips in it to see what they'd be like.
For PortSide I drew this pic (hi-res) to show myself that I've got a future for it. It helps when I'm feeling low on ideas.
------------------

You gotta do what's right for you. Some people are so far deep in the hole that they'd like to quit but they can't. I can tell you've got your foot stuck in the hole, and.... hm...sorry, my analogy skills are poor.
But what I mean is, when I ended COMIC!!!, I had a couple of fans retaliate, saying that they wanted to see it continue. I decided to stop COMIC!! regardless, and came back with Merlin's Crew, which I think is much much better, even if it means I had to lose a couple of people.
People call me egotistic, and maybe it's true, but you have to consider yourself. I myself have always wanted readers, but with my first comic strip, towards the end I began to feel discontented with it. It was going nowhere fast. I could do it for the few readers it had, or I could scrap it and try and go with a much better idea.
Granted, my new comic strips haven't taken off yet, but I feel they can.
I don't want to see you become like David Willis is. I'm not going to harp on him, but he's gotten way too sensitive to his fans, and it's reflected in his work. And he had a hard time quitting Roomies because the fans didn't want it to go, and it conflicted with him until he reached a point where he just couldn't stand the characters anymore.
I know it sounds cheesy, but let your heart decide.
(p.s. the chronology of David Willis may not be entirely correct so don't be quick to flame me for getting it wrong)
=============

Here's a fun idea: Make up for yourself a REALLY off-the wall scenario, something normally outside your comic universe...then set yourself the challenge of writing yourself to that point believably.

------------------

You have to make sure you still love the comic and the story, etc yourself. If you don't it's time to rethink everything. That may mean a new project or a revamp of the existing one.
I was in your spot and I'm starting pretty much from zero again today with a completely revamped comic.
------------------

Don't be too hard on yourself. It took me almost ten years to get my comic strip to the point it is now (I started it in 6th grade), and even now I still think I need to tweak it more. I think in the beginning it's all trial and error, and you gradually get it to where it's just the way you want it. You may even come out with a totally different kind of comic strip than what you started out with! If you find yourself short of time, just cut down how often it appears (maybe just 3 times a week or so).
Just keep at it and keep trying new things. You'll find your niche eventually.
------------------
