results with print advertising?
Here's my story:
In March of this year, a local newspaper
(The Daily Herald - it's a newspaper aimed
at the Chicago suburbs) ran an article on
web comics, and did a couple of paragraphs on
mine, and ran 2 strips. They included my
url. My estimate for increased readership
for the day and next few days after the
article ran: 0.

HA HA HA - Box, where do you live? Do you realize I'm the one that suggested that story? I'm the graphics editor for the Daily Herald! Yeah I know, the design is really outdated, but we're working on that!
Dam, we've got to get together. To reply to you, no I haven't tried it yet. But I think if I put a little ad in the DePaul school paper, UIC, Loyola and Northwestern, I'd probably get a few looks just because the demographics I'd be targeting would be people who are more likely to try out a new url on the internet.
Let's talk about a table together at Wizard's World in Rosemont next year. We could staff it for ourselves and promote Space and Spot at the same time.

------------------

demographic won't be into the internet as

Sorry to tell you this, but according to Chris, visits are also counted by the newsbox...
When the server recieves an indivual request for something (I believe just the first hit or perhaps something like that), it registers as a visit. I was getting the supposed "150-250 visits per day" for a while, but I got pissed since I knew it was really fake, so I placed my newsbox image on another site. WHAMMO, my visits are now slightly above 100, which is an okay average for TRUE visits.
Pageviews, btw, were and are not affected by the newsbox at all since they are their name: PAGES. So while my visits went down a lot I was still getting good #'s for pageviews...
I'm not trying to dissappoint you... sorry about that... but if you have an image in the newsbox, the odds are that you're getting up to 100 visits less per day than you think you are (but perhaps only 50 or so).
THIS IS TRIED AND TRUE but in case I'm wrong (which I hope I am), get yer info from Chris... In fact, I'll ask him about it now.
------------------

Sadly, that is true.
It works like this:
Every time someone accesses ANY file of yours from your account, it counts as a hit. Visits are based upon hits. I can't find the words to describe what visits are. (sorry) Pageviews are counted when someone access any type of HTML file from your site. So, they only count when someone goes to your page or reads through the archives. Those are very much more accurate than visits.
I'll be starting a campaign shortly to move everyone's images to one remote directory on an independent site so your stats are not screwed. I'll do this when I have the time, and I don't have a lot of it right now.
Moral of the story: Do not pay attention to visits. Go by pageviews.
------------------

Didn't mean to put you on the spot. You're right, I'd say student newspaper have more potential for that sort of thing.
When I suggested the article I hadn't thought of doing Odd Jobs yet. I suggested it the previous summer, before I ever even saw Big Panda. I think I launched in May, a few months after the article published. Coincidentally, Wired had a big web toon article the next week.
Anyway, no one at the Herald knows I do the strip. Not that they'd have a problem with it, but I'd like to keep the two separate.
