It took me a little bit to come around on Shadowrun Returns, because I wasn't sold by their decision to go isometric at first. I have since come to my senses. I've been a Shadowrun fanboy for twenty years, now, after all. It's one of the few games I can honestly say I'm excited to buy when it comes out. It is definitely channeling the old SNES and Genesis Shadowrun games, which are so great I still occasionally boot them up. And who knows? Considering the hype and the funding success it's had, it could lead to future projects. Maybe one day, my dreams of a Western-style, first- or third-person, open-world rpg Shadowrun will come true. Could you imagine what the mix of GTA and Fallout in Awakened Seattle in 2055-2070 would be like? I'm salivating just thinking about it.

Here's 20 minutes of gameplay footage.

Imagine something like Vampire: Bloodlines, but Shadowrun, it'd be wonderful. Or a Left 4 Dead style 4 person co-op, but you're doing a Shadowrun heist! Complete with L4D style proper characters and banter, have a mage, decker, rigger and street samurai, and have them all have unique powers. That's pretty much my dream game right there.

I haven't played Vampire: Bloodlines, but I want to. It looks pretty great, and I'm not too wild about vampire fiction in general.

Oh, do! I'm not big on Vampires either, but it's just a great game. There's a fanpatch that's a bit necessary for stability, but besides that it's great. I'm all about RPGs that makes you feel your choices were significant, and it definitely does that.

Just save Malkavian or Nosferatu for a replay!

I'm actually a total shadowfraud, I've only been a fan of the game for like 6 months now. I was the absolute last person to play the SNES game, it seems (and I haven't played the Genesis game yet). The SNES game is awesome though.

My understanding is the Genesis one is where it's at (for once in history).

But I've not partaken in either myself.

Yes, that's what I'd heard too, and why I initially skipped over the SNES game. They're quite different though, and the SNES game is still really cool.

Both are fun, but the Genesis one really does take it. It just has a quality of ambition to it that the SNES one doesn't. It is the only reason why I have a Genesis emulator on my computer.

I have currently installed 165 mods to Skyrim. I've had over 200 on Oblivion at one time, and it felt over-modded. So far, with Skyrim, though, it still feels like Skyrim.

Next comes the ghos of gaming future.

Postby Cope on Sat May 25, 2013 4:28 am

My gaming past is my gaming present! Replaying old games to save money. Just finished another playthrough of Twilight Princess, and now I've started on Conker's Bad Fur Day.

Every time I plug my N64 back in, those blurry graphics hit me like a slap to the face.

oh man that reminds me of when I tried to go back and play some MegaMan Legends. I love MegaMan Legends. But oh man PS1 graphics are not kindly rendered on large modern screens.

I remember when I played FF7 I was thinking "Man, this is really blocky." That was 2003.

I have not. I tend to prefer immersion, badassery, and quests for my own games. I do love to watch a lot of gaming videos, especially Skyrim mod reviews (go figure!) and I do get a real kick out of watching other people have a go with the silly mods. I have been tempted on several occasions to get the Minecraft mod, though.

I'm now up to 225 mods, though. I'm gonna have to merge some of my plugins pretty soon.

Obviously, I knew what happens to Aeris.

You know, while playing through Final Fantasy VII for the first time ever, I'm surprised at how much of the plot hasn't been spoiled for me.

It's a pretty intricate game, and people only really talk about that one incident, about a third of the way through.

Taking a bit of a break from Skyrim. I've discovered Tekkit.

I've become yet another victim of the Steam Summer Sale. So many games for so cheap!

What games did you buy?

Either fortunately or unfortunately, I have been completely broke throughout the Summer Sale, and will continue to be so right up until the 22nd. It's just as well, I guess. I've got plenty of games to occupy my time, already. I'm still having a lot of fun with Minecraft mod packs. I've moved on to Feed the Beast, which I think is even better than Tekkit. I'm not too taken with Minecraft vanilla's 1.6 update additions, though, so I think I'll be sticking to 1.5 and below.
