I feel like Arcade Fire need some editors. They have the capacity to make some excellent music, but the records just aren't consistent.

Yeah, Arcade Fire has some wonderful and strange tunes, I'm guessing carribean-inspired or whatever, but then it also has some generic indy ballads and whatever.

Eh I'm all for indy rock and believing that major things mostly happen in that "genre" nowadays, but sometimes I go to a local club and am served with all-evening string of indistinguishable jangle-pop tunes, apparently by various groups but all sounding exactly the same... it can quite put you off.

well truthfully I couldn't tell ya the tracks. I'm with MCDs thoughts though. I think they got a cool sound and some interesting licks, but at the same time, nothing has really grabbed me. Its one of those things where its like "come on I know you go it".

but if those songs are recommendations I'll check em out. I'm open minded enough to give em another listen... plus who can really say no to a cry emoticon?

Haha, I've never made a breakup CD. It's more a case of listening to a given song a lot and then returning to it some time later and realizing "THIS SONG REMINDS ME OF WHEN I WASN'T ANGSTY" and then I start wallowing in my sorrows instead of doing the sensible thing and just not playing the song/band for a while. Sometimes I make less depressing associations; I have a bunch of albums that are attached in my memory to the good times I had in my frosh year, etc. etc.

On the subject of your music choices, though... I wish we'd see more Postal Service and less Death Cab.

Name-dropping a just-discovered band: I found Margot and the Nuclear So-and-So's through a recommendation thread on another forum. They are okay. I like the song "Skeleton Key." They have a new album coming out this year and I will probably download it.

In all honesty though, I've given up on trying to name favorite bands or artists. The best music is a track that inspires something - personally, it tends to be a visual clip or sequence tied to the flow of music.
RED - "Breathe Into Me" : a badass "Void Assassin" character breaking into an old abandoned church and beating the daylights out of the warriors taking shelter inside.
Lene Marlin - "Fly Me Away" : future MS character Zoe reflecting on her situation and future prospects
Assemblage 23 - "Apart" : a Dwemer sphere centurion coming to life, defending its surrounding ruins from some treasure-hunting adventurers (Kudos to anyone who gets this reference)

...of course, maybe that's just because I don't dance.

Too bad, Funeral is really rhythmical and weird in a good sort of way, and lyrics are dealing with some really unusual issues (I mean, the first dog on the moon and stuff). Though you're prolly right, they have more unspoken potential for future albums that what they've shown up so far.

I was thinking of Sigur Ros, who are, I think, not Canadian, but most of post-rock bands that I know are Canadian, so I was trying to be cute.
I was actually caught up only by latest BSS album, the Kevin Drew project, which is also weird in a good sorta way. I figured that they'd be a sort of yours national pride.

While I'm namedropping bands, is there any other Weenhead around?

i think its kind of interesting the amount of indie stuff coming out of Canada. of course aside from a few things like some hardcore punk and the million and one projects of Daniel Myer (synth stuff don't mind me) I didn't really pay much attention. it all snuck up on me.

As much as I love Death Cab (Plans is one of my favorite albums ever), I kinda like Postal Service better. I hope Ben decided to continue with that side project. Ha ha, speaing of which, "Such Great Heights" is at the beginning of that break up cd. It starts happy and idealistic before it gets depressing at the end. The last song is "I Want to Vanish" by Elvis Costello.

Man I was wondering why that outback song was familiar. I don't think I'd have placed it as that album isn't the one of theirs I latched onto. This is nothing new though, I'm fairly sure I've heard a lot of bands I like ripped off for commercials though no specific examples come to mind. Then there are the times when they actually license them like Spoon was recently for a phone as I recall.

Random music talk and talking to earlier conversations follows.

Neon Bible was one of the least impressive albums I'd heard in a while. No Cars Go and a couple other tracks were good, but no cars came from an ep so it wasn't really new. Seemed to meander for a long time doing nothing particularly interesting. The recent bloc party album also had the same problem, though I don't think it had any redeeming songs I can name.

I just can't get into Stars. For some reason it just doesn't click for me even though everything seems to be there that I would like.

Anyone ever listen to Apparat? I think that album has been in my rotation since it came out.
