I'm not sure if it's a Sanrio store or a Hello Kitty store, but there's one in Metrotown in Burnaby(Vancouver)ataraxia wrote:Thank Eris that you've never been to a Hello Kitty store in Japan, then. I thought I knew merchandising. I knew nothing.
See how ones professional work acts as a damage buffer.LAO wrote:
On a related note, don't you all remember flipping the fuck out at that member a while ago who traced someone's cat-girl and just added tiger stripes? Seems that stealing was stealing, no gray area, back then. What changed?McDuffies wrote: Well, if you really want to bring that up from under the rug again, remember that it's you who brought it up, not me. But I'm posting it in small letters anyway.
There were a few major differences from this case:
1. As I said, Todd wasn't selling the same concept. I do suggest that he tried to put it in a different context.
2. Artist in question is in the learning stage of drawing, many posters simply wanted to point out that it's a bad way to learn art. Much of them were, actually, well indended.
3. Artist denied that it was traced even presented with original. It's the lie that irritated many. Todd is saying more along the lines of "I did it so what". Not "I didn't do it, similarity is coincidental"
4. I don't see why you're bringing this up to me, actually, I wasn't one of the most vocal, nor one of the most agressive attackers in that thread. Frankly, I thought that it should've calmed a long before it did.
1. The same drawing shown in Shmorky(Dave Kelly, not to be confused with STrRedWolf Kelly) was shown slightly modified by Todd Goldman. This part is the same with that tread, the artist presented the work as their own, got positive feedback, then someone said 'STOLEN' and then it brought out the worst in people. I made a quick trace too and modified it a little just to show that it takes NO TALENT to trace.
3. Todd, probably making tens of thousands per piece of art, probably ripped off Shmorky thinking it was just an internet meme or some other public domain cruft for the taking. If you think this is bad, go on eBay and look up an eBook on any topic. They are all stolen from 'the public domain' , but by public domain, they mean like gamefaq.com's and stuff. What makes it worse is that nothing short of a VeRO request will stop the people on eBay from making money off of other peoples works. Such is the risk of the internet. The first person to make a dollar on it gets all the credit. I would recommend that people put their comics on eBay with "NO RESELL AND NO REPRODUCTION RIGHTS GRANTED" just in case this kind of thing happens. Oh, and there are also piles of Chinese counterfieters that copy art in case you think it's an isolated thing.
4. I was the most vocal about it because of exactly this (Todd Goldman) reason. People on the internet ARE DUMB, they don't know much about copyright even when shoved in their face. If you produce something, you copyright it, you maintain copyright over it unless you license or sell your rights to someone else. End of story. You do not have the right (*shakes sprite rip people*) to make money off of someone elses work, even if the perception is they don't care.
When you steal someone elses art, you do not have the right to sell or license someone elses rights. This Todd person is licenseing out other peoples artwork to put on t-shirts. Given people can make the damn shirts themselves (inkjet ironons anyone?) does not give them the right to resell the things.
But we can go around and around in circles and beat this dead horse some more, but it's between Shmorky and Todd to settle it out, the internet can be outraged as much as it wants, but unless it becomes CNN headline news, the rest of the americans probably don't know who Todd is or why they should care.
On the subject of Hello Kitty, I found something for McDuffies: The official Hello Kitty nude shoot.Kisai wrote:I'm not sure if it's a Sanrio store or a Hello Kitty store, but there's one in Metrotown in Burnaby(Vancouver)ataraxia wrote:Thank Eris that you've never been to a Hello Kitty store in Japan, then. Okay, I know Charmmy Kitty is a separate character from Hello Kitty, but that's the first thing I thought when I saw her. Also, this isn't entirely a thread hijack, since right now some people are probably thinking to themselves "what a degenerate"!
