Look, man: Collapse is Collapse is Collapse. That won't change. Just let him run his course until StrRedWolf notices him and he'll be malleted to Jupiter and back; you just wait and see.
Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.
You'd be amazed that when you realize your own mortality, you don't really give a shit about that overdue library book in your closet.TOXIC AVENGER! wrote:You'd be amazed at what you can do when you realize you will die one day.yeahduff wrote:You'd be amazed at what you can do when you just really want to die.

Once somebody wrote that if everyone does what's best for themselves the system will improve. This led to capitolism and a free market economy. It also lead to monopolies and government oversight but it just doesn't work.
Someone else wrote that if everyone does what's best for themselves AND what's best for the group the system will improve. This theory is used to predict stock market activity to some degree of accuracy. -- A Beautiful Mind (yes, I got this theory from a movie. So what?)
People are inherently selfish so they try to do what's best for themselves without regard for the rest. Communism tries to do what's best for the group without regard to the individual. Neither of these really works because they only benefit the people in power. I would suggest a system where the individual has the chance to do what's best for themselves within certain guidelines but nobody likes socialism either.
I think the human race is basically screwed.

That probably comes from trying to survive in the wild. You can't be thinking about the alligator's wellbeing and finding yourself sympathetic to it while it's trying to eat you--that would help you realize your own mortality very quickly indeed, lol. It's just a natural instinct to take care of yourself and your family first and then worry about everybody else.faub wrote: People are inherently selfish so they try to do what's best for themselves without regard for the rest.
But there are plenty of good people out there who, having secured their futures, try to help out everybody else. I call that guilt.

Hundreds of years of economic development boiled down to a few paragraphs! There's no way that can be inaccurate or oversimplistic!faub wrote:Once somebody wrote that if everyone does what's best for themselves the system will improve. Hell, I wouldn't worry about the stupid alligator. I'd try to trip my companion or break his leg to outrun him. That's survival of the fittest.. well, the first one to screw the other guy anyway.Leko wrote:That probably comes from trying to survive in the wild. Better him than me!
I guess that applies to our society now, it's just that we want alligators now, and are willing to screw anyone to get'em! Most people anyway...
:o man.. how do I end up completely befuddled and speechless every time I visit these forums???

I'm kind of feeling that way about a lot of stuff right now. Why should I give a crap about anything?Warren wrote:You'd be amazed that when you realize your own mortality, you don't really give a shit about that overdue library book in your closet.TOXIC AVENGER! wrote:You'd be amazed at what you can do when you realize you will die one day.yeahduff wrote:You'd be amazed at what you can do when you just really want to die.
Yet I still have planted deep inside me that I should and shouldn't do certain things.

Someone said "If you take all the money in the world and share it on equal parts to every person in the world at 12:00, at 12:05 it would already be a class society.faub wrote:Once somebody wrote that if everyone does what's best for themselves the system will improve.
