Why I don't have clean comics.

For discussions, announcements, non-technical questions and anything else comics-related or otherwise that doesn't fit in any of the other categories.

Being a left-handed son of a left-handed man, my extreme original strips (ones that I wrote back when I was just making fun of MegaTokyo and not expecting to have my own site someday) were some of the messiest piece-of-junk pencil comics ever, and that spilled over into my earliest web-based ones. To publish on the web, I followed these steps:

1. Come up with an idea.

2. Do some yardwork to keep Mom pleased.

3. Draw the comic.

4. Scan the comic.

5. Club myself over the head because the whole frecklin' thing's grey.

6. Save and upload.

Now with ink, it takes longer, but scanning, coloring, and text all end up looking nicer (although the text is more indirect as I don't have any in the final inked version but add it with the computer). Granted, none of you probably wanted to hear any of that, but it feels good to remind myself that I'm improving.

Word. The whole side of my hand would be black. I have to use ink that dries pretty fast even or I'll smudge that all across the page too. I feel your pain sir.

We don't ink (despite my repeatedly begging Colby to ink before I clean up and compose the artwork)
I just darken the lineart in photoshop.

Either that, or get a bunch of small erasers to take that gritty crud off the paper left behind by your dragging your hand across it while drawing. The smudges don't add anything, they detract immensely. Either that, or cut holes in a sock and wear it as you draw...that's an old comics penciller trick, as pro companies need you to have a clean page with clear pencil marks.
I can only imagine Nike's shirts after making his comics
