I have another one up today; my 6th so far. It is losing 4:1. I popped over to the other comics website and forums and found a member there said my comic was 'pretty damn awful' in the seemingly obligatory webcomic battle thread there. A part of me told me that I should be upset by such an offhanded pan .. but it was a pretty big 'meh' moment.

I like Cutethulu, Din... and I'm glad you didn't let a crappy comment get you down. The thing to remember is that they're trying to make the other artist feel better by belittling you - and like ALL internet forums, the poster feels superior by being insulting, regardless of whether he/she could do any better. Good ol' intarweb.

And Tenma... if it aint fun, don't do it - but you have no reason to feel bad. As I said earlier, I laughed out loud at your latest strip... and it DID get me reading Treading Ground. One more hit isn't amazing, but it is one more hit. ;)

It totally depends on whose voting, too - and those tides are fickle. If they're IN on your jokes (like having seen Superman Returns)... or if they're SICK of your punchlines (killing pikachu gets old.) Tarlickers, for instance, is paired up against a sex joke today. Pitted against a similar bawdy strip, they might have done very well - but up against Tarlickers they're totally losing.

In my case, apparently EVERYONE is in on what I expected to be a long-forgotten children's book. Go fig.

Yeah, I wouldn't take it for serious what people on some forum say. It's probably said more with intention to support their forum regular, than as a fact.

Thanks for the kind words. As been said before by others; The point of me posting a few comics there is not just to win, but hopefully show what I have to the (obvious) minority who may like my sort of thing and to move them along to the comic. Tastes in comedy, art, and community are subjective and fickle .. it is a little free advertising. As to criticisms, I know most of the weaknesses of my work and I try to address them with the finite time I have at my disposal.

Heh, I plan on using this old "forgotten childhood icon" thing to my advantage. Everyone seems to get them, and it's a reason that certain comics have done so well.

Anyway, I give away nothing at the moment, but I'll say this: Hello top ten! Again.

8-)

Tenma wrote:...wtf? Isn't caring what other people think the whole point of this Webcomic Battle thing? I mean, if you didn't want votes, you wouldn't enter, right?
Well, of course I want votes, but more than kicking ass like ThatGuy, I just want to expose my comic to as many people as I can. Of course, votes are important in order for that to happen, but I got decent hits from the second comic I submitted, which was only up for five days.

Even if each comic I submit only lasts 3-7 days, I'll be doing great, because it will (Hopefully.) keep people coming back to the site, which is a concern of mine as I only update weekly. As you guys all know, it's hard for comics that don't update often to succeed, so every little bit helps.

I don't know what you guys think, but I consider the seventh strip to be the best one so far. So was I disappointed that it lost on its first day, and that I only got eleven hits for my efforts? Sure. But I didn't let it get me down. I submitted again later, and although my next submission did not last that long, I got around 500 (Maybe more.) hits.

Which obviously would not have happened if I gave up. Caring so much about what other people think will only hurt you.

Treading Ground's "Yaoi Explained" is a thousand times funnier than Where's My Parade's "Disability Discrimintion." >_<;; I'm sorry, but I don't get that strip, I don't see why it's supposed to be funny, and now it must pay the price, regardless of whatever unfunny comic it is pit against.

Oh, I reckon that disability one's priceless! I had a giggle fit when I first read it. I love the fact that to reach the wheelchair door they just put in a ladder. It's a very accurate portrayal of a regulation quick fix!

And now I've probably explained it too much.

It made me laugh...quite a bit.

If you don't get it, then how do you know it isn't funny?

And in his pee-pee.

I'm not going to say Disability Discrimination isn't funny, but I honestly thought I had a much better chance than that. Then again, it's usually the same ~150 people voting, and when they like a strip, they're not quick to turn their backs on it.

Discrimination one's okay, but I sure as heck voted for the Yaoi Explained. On this kind of contest I've noticed that comics which require less reading generally do better. Even if the joke is funnier, people don't wanna take the time to read it if they have 6 or 8 comics to shuffle through in order to vote for the one they actually care about.

Out There vs. Mulberry Gallows Project. Goddamn shame, because I'm not sure I liked two comics on that thing as much as those two. So I voted for the one I thought would lose.

Thanks for the vote, man, and best of luck today. You definitely have my support, but it looks like Disability might actually give you some competition.

And I agree, too many words do tend to turn people off. Yaoi was definitely one of the wordier ones in my archive, but it's also the one that's gotten linked, quoted, and even stolen the most, so I figured I'd give it a try.

Unfortunately I don't really have a lot of comics left that are suitable for this kind of thing. (Most of mine are waist-deep in storyline.)
