The core of the male being is the eternal struggle to find "The next place to put it."

A woman, a man, an animal, a tree, a brick, sea life, whatever.

That's our goal. That's our curse.

It was influenced by suck precedors of comic art as Wilhelm Bush, but there's a lot of other arts that people like to pin as comics: From cave art to frescs in churches (generally, they all use graphic narration in multiple pictures). If you ask me, those can be cpunted only as mere influences in bacoming of comics.
The Yellow Kid.

Also, The Yellow Kid was actually predated by another cartoon called "The Little Bears" or something like that. And neither one was really a true modern comic strip; I believe "Katzenjammer Kids" was the first time someone used actual dialogue within the strip's artwork (apparently, the messages written on The Yellow Kid's shirt don't count).

Well, you were the first to notice that. And I guess it worked as a kind of rorshach test, and that brings us to conclusion that you're more perverted than sippan,mcDuffies and theGoobla.

Er... No. While it's true that natural selection selects based on reproductive success, it can be easily argued that reproduction is no longer the core of humanity. In fact, it can be argued that while evolution still plays a role in humanity, the role is now human defined.

To take your statement further, the core of the female being would be the eternal struggle to get pregnant by the most verile of men.

Given that reproductive success can only exist between male and female, your arguement suggests all other forms of sexual gratification (perhaps exempting sperm or egg banking) amounts to attempted genocide.

Your quote sounds nice, but just isn't the case.

Actually Kolter, I think what dear old Mr. Ekshin was saying here was that reproductive success is neither here nor there, but sexual gratification is the core of male being. No role was set up for the female, and no link between the respective central goals of each sex were placed. To me, the maxim holds true.....

Except that I don't subscribe to it that much.

A tutorial would be nice McDuff.

Didn't speech baloons appear in "Yellow kid" too? As I understood it, when he went to Herst, he made him shape it more like a nowaday comic.
Actually I'm not sure if it happened before or after "Katzenjamer kids" or "Buster Brown" but I figure it was before.
Anyway, it's all debatable. For one thing, "Yellow kid" is a first thing published in a way comics are published.

Lets change the course to a more related (and, more importantly, easier to determine) topic: what was the first webcomic?

I don't know. I suspect it was sluggy.
There were certainly people who placed their comics on sites before, but not serial and certainly not daily.
Then again maybe it's PA? Or PVP? I'm not sure of dates.
When did they start puting syndicated comics, like on ucomics.com? Before or after?
Fi13r will know.

I think an easier question would be, 'What was the first webcomic you read that got you interested in it?' For me, my first webcomic experiance was Sabrina Online by Eric Schwartz, who does all his artwork on an Amiga, amazingly enough. I haven't checked it for a while though. Probably should.

I think Wendy was the first comic I ever read that got me starting. Back then it was only on episode 10 or so; from Wendy I found Tang's Weekly Comic and through that I found Sinfest and Keenspot, then Keenspace and the rest is how you say history.

I went from Sexy Losers to Tang, Ghastly, and PSC. And from Tang to Slipshine. This was all only like a year ago. Finally got my keenspace account about 6 months later.
