Well, about using models (rarely) or photographs (more often)... I thought that goes without saying! How can one learn to draw something more than stick-figures if he's not using pictures as examples?

Oh, one thing else... When I was much younger and I didn't know about anathomy even what I know today, I used to say that I'm gonna draw caricature-comics where you don't need exact anatomy... But you do! Eye on an experienced beholder can notice a trace of unskillnes in any drawing style.
And that's not what we want, right?

I sometimes use references but if I'm doing a comic in school it's like a rushed drawing and I make it look nice later.

unless youre doing figure drawwing or something, anatomy isn't that big of a deal, as others pointed out in this thread.

The key is to simplify the real anatomy down to the most basic form possible without destroying the distinguishing features. All you need to is to give the reader the gist of the character, not a photo-quality rendition.

It's just a matter of preference how simple you want to get. Look at a Superman or any number of superhero comics, and you'll see little to no "dumbing down" of the anatomy. Then look at Pentasmal. Everything else falls somewhere in between.

Errrrrrrrntomy? Whassat then?

Mmm, I think my 3D modelling days engraved the basics of anatomy into my skull. Believe me, 3D modelling a human means you have to study the form in so much damn depth! I spent 2 weeks staring at that point where the two tubes of trousers join together, both guys and gals. oOOoooo I got a lot of dodgy looks after doing that... Still, it was fun, hur hur hur...

Mmm, haven't touched anatomy in 3 years since though, I guess it kinda' shows...

Maybe Barbie doll anatomy...
Sure, they're closer than something like Pentasmal, but for the most part, they're still a gross simplification.

How's that? I mean, the people may be unrealistically proportioned in superhero comics and the physics may be awkward, but they still follow the same principles of skeletal frame and muscle contours that humans do. Maybe not in the 1940s, but nowadays, yeah!

Depends on the intent. PDI would suffer if we did too much bug-eye tongue rolling, for example.
