I was thinking more like Blue Beetle and Booster Gold type lines, or the Wally West Flash. Even Spidey is a wisecracker.alschroeder wrote: It's been done.
Japanese Beetle.
Skirting Danger.
That Fluffy thingee on Graphic Smash.
Vindibudd.
OTH!
My character's crossed over with those last two, BTW.
LOTSA others.
It's the SERIOUS ones that are relatively hard to find. Although I'm interesting in Edge the Devil Hunter and Locke, of the new Graphic Smash titles, and there's LOTTE VS. THE DEAD on Wirepop, which straddles parody and serious, about a punk/both child of Mr. PErfect---a Superman-type..and old dependables like the Gaming Guardians and the Ram. Sstill, there are more parodies than serious superheroes.---Al

Reasons Nob the Blob won't get spotted.
Effort: I'm happy with the amount of work I'm putting into it now, and definately won't be able to put more in once school starts.
Demographics: I don't have any demographics, I just make a comic that makes me laugh. This leads to a comic that doesn't fit well within genre boundaries.

Oh, okay. Sure! Serious action, comic edge. If you ever do it, I'd be very interested. Christwriter, I don't understand why you put yourself down. I love the colouring in your comics, and if you don't like the drawing, that can only improve with practice (I like your drawing too anyway).
I also don't understand your signature. I haven't yet found anything whacky or fundamentalist in your comic that it may irritate me for christian content. And that IS one of my known irritants, or a source of hilarity in some cases, but only when it comes in this form:

Christwriter: All in good time. You're improving at an astonishing rate that sometimes scares me. And hey, you're still a youngster yet. Most of the really successful webcomickers tend to be older people (20+), or at least, that's what I seem to notice... Any rate, you have plenty of time.
And if it makes you feel better, I couldn't colour like that when I was your age.
Al: I have one rule of thumb when it comes to dialogue:
The shorter and the less said, the better. Because IMHO, in real life people don't make long speeches without practising in front of a mirror first
Besides, I hate it when huge speech bubbles block my carefully coloured backgrounds. Unless those backgrounds suck, then yeah.
Regarding superhero comics: Not meaning to put down those of you who do superhero comics; but this is just my personal preference: I don't like doing superhero comics much...
I think it's because of the concept that they have that inherent edge (superpowers) over normal people, making them too powerful and invulnerable. When they get shot at, or fall from heights, or have a building fall on them, I don't really feel concerned because chances are, they get away with nary a scratch afterwards.
I like writing vulnerable characters. It makes it ten times scarier when I put them in dangerous situations and wonder if all of them are going to make it out alive. It's also interesting when I give them a problem to solve that others can't, and they solve it as normal human being, without the help of superpowers or magic or whatever. That's what makes a character special for me.
So yeah, give me heroes that bleed anytime

I love the fact Kaycee is a totally normal human character in a bunch over super-powered people.

"Lotte Vs. The Dead" is made by the author of one of my favorite comics - http://www.flipsidecomics.com . He does wonderful work! I don't subscribe to Wirepop though, so I can't really read LVTD.alschroeder wrote:Although I'm interesting in Edge the Devil Hunter and Locke, of the new Graphic Smash titles, and there's LOTTE VS. Oh! And thank you for the compliments, Al and K-Dawg.
I haven't seen that either. So, I'll say it now!faub wrote:Now it seems like people are saying, it's not necessary to be spotted. I don't think I've seen anyone say outright they would refuse if they were asked (correct me if I'm wrong)...
If I were (hahaha yeah right) invited to Spot on this day, I wouldn't refuse out of spite, or because I'd look totally badass by refusing one of the greatest webcomic opportunities online (and I mean that).
I would say "No Thank-you" because I don't consistently update, because I don't know how long I'm going to keep this comic going, and because I don't EVEEEER want my comic getting really popular.
Why the heck not? Well, I don't want the name of "Soap" to be associated with that comic for the rest of my online days! Extra visits are definitely an ego boost and I love every one of my wonderful readers - but I don't want people seeing "Soap Soaperson/Committee," and saying "HAHAHA, didn't you draw that non-sensical comic called 'Deity Permit'?" So...uh...yeah. >_> There you have it.
Blaaaaaaah, whatever. I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said to death. Spot's a good stepping-stone, and if a million people want to be invited into it, then that's fine!
[Editted because the original post sounded like it was fishing for compliments - and I HATE THAT!]

Those are actually oposite reasons than mine. I say -college comics are too popular so there's already a lot of them; on the contrary, you say that comics of Jaded's kind are not enough popular. Someone is wrong.Phalanx wrote:![]()

Fine, you come up with reasons then!
*sulks*
Seriously, my point was being that gaming/college humour comics tend to get more popular (and more quickly too) than serious comics due to the large percentage of the readers being college students, and they go for what appeals to them *blah blah blah etc*. Also, mystery comics are more of a niche appeal, I think. Well, a niche in a niche...
Anyway while Keen has said a comic does not have to be very popular to be Spotted, it does make a difference if there's a huge readership involved. (Oh yeah it does)
And let's be honest, my comic is nothing cuting-edge and doesn't have much shock value either. I doubt I'd have anything new to add to the Keenpot Lineup.
So all the reasons boil down to me not being popular enough, and not having a comic that would appeal to the majority.
Geez, that wasn't very cheerful to type, was it?
I'll go off to the corner and cry now
Actually, I think Spot to lacks comics like Jaded. First of all, comics in realistic style, just like comics that don't go for humor, are totall minority in spots. I can name Wandering ones, Clan of the cat (although I wouldn't really call CoTC realistic), maybe one or two more, but that's little and they're all pretty different.
On the other hand, college comics... *smacks forehead* what was I thinking.
Hey, that's the reason I couldn't remember.Effort: I'm happy with the amount of work I'm putting into it now, and definately won't be able to put more in once school starts

Oh, and I must say that I don't see the need to push spot people into spotting anyone else.
With EOI and CYS, it was different situation: there were no new spots from space, they were taking indie mostly, and even those spacers who were spotted, were comics that were here for a long time, and I kinda felt as if that was mostly to honour their long going. Like spotting Silli Cone V a bit before it ended.
But now, it's a pretty differend situation, fab four is looking this way too, and if they don't want to overcrowd spot right now, I can understand that. I mean, we've got a good communication, and there's no need trying to force spot people into anything. Sure, there are a lot of comics that deserve to ge spotted on space, but I think it's only fair to leave it to those whose job that is now.

Um...I was in a pretty weird mood that day. Also under the impression that I was expected to dumb down my moral reactivity for other people who don't have the same expectations leveled on them, so I was a little anxious about meeting a bunch of people I didn't know very well. Call it a minor culture clash.Bekka wrote: I also don't understand your signature. I haven't yet found anything whacky or fundamentalist in your comic that it may irritate me for christian content. The story will change. It's got a great deal of religious (word used for lack of a better one) materal in it...just, not at the moment. We're running through the sorta-prologue now...the story just happened to start here. I've learned better than to argue with story. Story goes where Story needs to go. Hopefully it won't get too conforontational because the characters are the focus, not the readers (if one more writer puts their adjenda in thier writing, I'm going to haul off and...) but I have no idea how non-Christians see Christianity, so I don't make any promises.

Four mildly attractive ladies playing D & D together? Obviously this is a mistake. Marcie deserved to die for thinking taking the death of her fictional character too seriously. I could just see her playing monopoly with a smug look on her face singing "I'm in the money". Then later that day at Dairy Queen:Bekka wrote: And that IS one of my known irritants, or a source of hilarity in some cases, but only when it comes in this form:

"That'll be 3 dollars"
"Here's a ten spot, keep the change my good man"
".....we don't accept monopoly money here"

If playing D & D really gave you supernatural powers, this would only make kids want to play more. I wish I'd heard this about D & D years ago, then I would have smited all my high school enemies! Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt!

Now, when you cross the line into bigotry (i.e. Sun Myung Moon, the Taliban, Jack Chick) you're gonna get friction...but I think pretty much everyone over the mental age of three has come to terms with the fact that some people have different beliefs than they do.

cool! people like it!
like al, i'm a bit surprised at the lack of 'serious' superhero comics on the web... given they comprise 90% of most comic book shops. but likewise i'm surprised at the lack of non-superhero comics in comic book shops. maybe the huge number of action and other type comics on the web will tip the balance back the other way in the print medium...
i agree with phalanx too that the superpower can lessens the character. invulnerability even moreso. the most ridiculous thing i ever saw was wolverine getting tenth degree burns and his body still being able to heal in a matter of minutes. puhh-lease!! pretty much all the magellan characters are vulnerable (not the least of whom is kaycee) - they get wounded, they get old and can (and have) died.
i love superhero stuff, but really hate it when it becomes outright silly, unrealistic and unscientific. and you can't get more unrealistic than some of those costumes the women (supposedly) fight in!

Well, if you'd look at the Wolvie character profile, he was born in the mid-1800s.
He fought in both world wars, too.
His healing powers make him essentially immortal. They did do a "Wolverine: The End" mini-series in the future when he finally takes a dirt nap. However, it's out of continuity so it doesn't "count".
I like the fact they're introducing the Weapon X girl from X-Men Evolution to the comics. It's pretty cool because she remembers the experimentation on her and left her twisted inside and really dark.

Dark, angsty, and brooding heroes annoy me. Mostly because writers often use dark, angsty, and brooding characters as an excuse to not write a plot.Van Douchebag wrote: I like the fact they're introducing the Weapon X girl from X-Men Evolution to the comics. But dark, angsty, brooding heroes ain't realistic!
No matter what happens to them, people heal over time. Even if they try NOT to be happy, life keeps trying to be happy.
It's like that guilty feeling you get when you find yourself smiling about something three days after a member of your family dies. Guilty. You feel like you ought to be brooding and angsty all the time, but you can't because people do get over things, and life goes on.
Heroes CAN't be broody and angsty all the time. They'd get really tired of it after a while.
