Bought the potting soil, eight large pots, starter greenhouses, and seeds today. I'm going to grow jalipenos and a sweeter pepper that's good for grilling. Beth is going to grow flowers.

I may have to hide uranium in her flowers. :shifty:

My parents (and now my brother, I guess) grow a few things in the backyard. From time to time there's been the occasional tomato plant, cherry tree, strawberry bush, watermelons, squash, apple tree, and plum. I know that currently the orange tree that has always been there, is still there, and also they're growing their own herbs. I particularly love the orange tree because they aren't typical orange juice oranges but are more bitter and acidic. Eaten plain, they're pretty good. Take enough to make up some orange juice and it's REALLY good and I keep meaning to identify them because I just really love them and want to eat them forever.

In college I wasn't ever afforded the opportunity to grow my own food, but I did try and regularly use fresh herbs that I would try and squeeze a little extra out of by trying to keep them growing after initial purchase. Dunno if it ever really worked since I didn't use them that often.

Currently I'm growing a 1-Up mushroom in my office.

I've got a serious black thumb when it comes to growing plants. They usually die on me pretty quickly, generally because I forget to water them.

I've killed spider plants and cacti.

Except that zucchini bread is really fantastic stuff. It doesn't really taste like zucchini at all, though.

I'm trying to attract hummingbirds this year. I've got a feeder for them, and I got a packet of seeds for Mexican sunflowers which apparently grow in a bush with lots of bright red flowers. Hummingbirds love the color red. The only problem is finding a place to put it that's near the feeder. Especially since it needs to be in full sunlight.

So what did you do with your mostly-split frog?

I thought you said he almost did, but not quite. But perhaps that's splitting hares.

I agree.

New pictures of the garden, via facebooks!

To refresh your memories, here's what my tomatoes looked like a month ago:

Image

Here they are now!

Image

They're like ridiculously huge! Also, they're finally starting to flower!

Image

You can also see my herbs are doing pretty well, excepting for the dill. I over-watered it, and it died.

Image

Flowers are doing pretty good, except the dahlia hasn't flowered since I got it. I think it'll happen soon though. I love the red/pink flowers!

Image
The lettuce kinda bunched up crappily due to how I watered it, but it's growing pretty well. I tried some of the mustard greens. They're AWESOME.

Finally, the back garden. Not very noteworthy.

Need to plant my flowers. Have a mix of random wildflowers. Also found some pumpkin seeds. Might have to seek and plant those out back.

Hey guise, sorry for the slight case of thread necromancy, but I figured I might oughta give y'all updates on the status of my garden. Sadly, no pictures at this time--maybe tomorrow.

My tomato plants, naturally, are even bigger, and I actually have tomatoes on them now! One of them got a case of vine rot :( but I'm hoping it'll redden up off-vine. The others are, otoh, doing great!

I've been getting broccoli, but the yields aren't that great--it likes flowering early. >_< It's enough, though, for the occasional addition of fresh broccoli to meals, though. :D Similarly, my mustard plants have been bolting like no other. I've pretty much given up on them. I'm not even sure if I'm gonna grow any next year. >_<

The peas are a mixed bag. The regular types are really lagging, but my snow peas are producing! I just pulled some off yesterday, and combined them with some shredded kohlrabi, nasturtium blooms, leaf lettuce and broccoli, all from my garden, and some tomatoes, sweet peppers and bag lettuce to make a pretty rad salad. Awesome!

Our backyard has a bunch of raspberries in it, and while I despise raspberries as plants, I grabbed some anyway and put them in a jar of vinegar, hoping to use it in a vinaigrette some time in the future.

Oh, and the herbs: I moved them into the living room, since the tomatoes were choking out all the light. I got some plant hangers from my girlfriend that I'm using. I actually do have pictures of these:

Image
FOR EXAMPLE. This was in my room, actually, but because of Alaska's pesky midnight sun I decided to move it so I could close the blinds.

Sounds like a super tasty garden. We just got around to starting our veggie garden (using plants since it's a bit late to spread seeds for summer produce). Keeping my fingers crossed.
