now I'm considering getting a Twitter account... sure it'll get about as much use as Live Journal and Myspace... but could be helpful for comic updates and the like.

I got twitter a couple weeks ago. I've gotten like 30 or so hits from there. Better than none, I suppose, but I also post pretty infrequently...

I suspect whether it's really useful or not correlates to how popular your site is. Popularity kind of works like a snowball, the more popular something is the faster it becomes even more popular. If you've got a big comic, a lot of people would probably post there, and then it might attract new people to your comic, but if your comic is small I doubt you'd see a lot of traffic.

Of course, it couldn't really hurt.

I also did phbites.comicgenesis.com and hntrac.comicgenesis.com way back when.

I do not know, but that is one fabulous quote!

Regarding social sites, I suspect Twitter gets so many votes in this thread because it is the current hot thing. You can probably find discussions like this from a couple years ago in which the answer was "FaceBook, definitely!", from a couple years before that in which the answer was "MySpace, definitely!", and from a couple years before that in which the answer was "LiveJournal, definitely!" Social networking sites seem to be like new toys for Internet users: people play with the newest one almost exclusively or maybe try to incorporate use of a beloved old one with the new ones, and then the excitement fades a bit, and then a new one comes along that gets nearly all the playtime in a whole new cycle.

That said, if you want popularity, then you should probably play with the hot new toy so you can be seen with the cool crowd. MySpace seems to be the current place for musicians and Twitter seems to be the current place for webcomics.

(For my part, I see Twitter as just a limited feed service, so I am trying to focus more on feed publishers and feed readers. But I am not good with social networking sites and my comic is still not very popular after being around for 5.5 years. So, don't be like me; go join the trendy sites and get known!)

I've been on Twitter for a month or so. I use it mostly for mundane daily life stuff, but I also converse with my friends on there, get news updates, and there is occasionally stuff about my comic.
