Filler is one of my biggest turn-offs. Filler that is nearly equal or more in quantity than actual updates. A good comic can be completely ruined if I have to browse past three "Computer difficulties" or "Up too late playing WOW again" filler pages to reach the next actual update. I'd rather see a schedule with fewer updates or even a sporatic schedule than tons of filler.

I'm shocked. You're the first guy I've heard say that filler is worse than irregular updates.

Actually it would be pretty cool to have a webcomic where every day that you don't update you have a filler strip. That way you could have a comic that "updates" every day with a minimum of effort. Bonus points if it's always the same filler strip.

^ Granted. I rely a lot on update notifications. If I receive a notification that a comic I like has updated, then go there only to find filler, I feel that comic has wasted my time. I’d rather just be notified if there’s an actual update, even if it’s sporatic. The occasional filler is perfectly acceptable and understandable. But when several notifications in a row result in filler, it’s pretty frustrating. I’ve stopped following a few because of that.

If I couldn't update, I used to post a goody doodle from my sketchbook underneath the actual comic in the blog section. I'm pretty much on time now these days.

I also hate when stories that start as light fluff turn halfway into some "serious" "dramatic" stuff. Not because of change of the tone, but because fluffy comics are often absurdist and inconsistent, and later writer struggles to rationalise all the things from the beginning that don't fit into new vision and continuity, making overly long and improbable explanations and leaving big, gapping holes.

In some quarters this is called The Cerebus Syndrome, after a pen-and-ink comic book called Cerebus the Aardvark which underwent a particularly horrific example of it.

My latest pet peevee is when people are openly worshiping their idols by heavily referencing them and adding tributes wherever they can. Specially if these idols are very predictable, like Mel Brooks, Douglas Adams or Monty Python - referencing any of them in your comic doesn't make your comic any better, and if you like some good comedy writers, doesn't mean that you are a good comedy writer too. I'd rather see something original. And I'm certaily not gonna say "Man, that Mel Brooks sounds interesting. How comes I've never heard of him?"

Note to any aspiring comickers out there: you can include homages to stuff, but make sure the strip in question is funny in and of itself even if people don't get the homage.

Anyways, besides being guilty of "some of the above". I don't do filler and while I don't mind filler in others, I begin to get annoyed when it has its own story arc, and even more when its better than the main comic it's supposed to be filling!

Pointless, inconsistent or generally erratic censorship. I usually don't care for ANY censorship (freeee biiiiird), but if you're going to (bleep) the (bleep) out of some words, either cover all your bases or none of them. I've seen a comic that #$%&'d out "damn" and then dropped the f-bomb a few pages later, and another one that decided to use "demn" instead--why even bother?

I hate comics that get a real cult following only to be put on lifetime haitus cause the artist found he gets more money drawing porn. Besides that there are, (and I'm guilty of this), the occasional one panel comic on a normaly multi panel comic that really drives a nail into a good joke by pushing it too many times.

Another of mine is comics that don't put the #$#%$ing comic on the first page that you visit. After the title, the comic should be the first thing you see.
