Re: This forum is like a goldfish swimming in circles
Wow...Taiwanimation wrote:Having been here on KS for a while, I often get this sense of deja vu. Every so often, the same threads will repeat themselves, and even on the thread level, the posts are often repetitive.
Exhibit 1: the "Monthly search strings" threads: Entertaining the first couple of times around, but every time it's just people pointing out sex-related search strings.
Exhibit 2: the "What/where/why/who/how is your comic/character/personal life such-and-such" threads: A good idea if there was discussion, but these end up as catalogues of each person's stuff.
Exhibit 3: the "I'm new" / "I'm back" / Comic Plug threads: One person starts post, everyone else posts once. Thread drops off page after everyone else has posted once, and thread starter hasn't had anything else to add.
There are the occassional gems, such as Ghastly's rants against the KS administration, but as a whole the bulk of the threads are filled with short posts and have little coherence.
Taiwanimation, it's obvious that you're not on this forum very often.
Topics do repeat, but you pointed at totally wrong examples.
1. Monthly search string threads repeat, but lately sex-related searchs ane not primary interesting. Now it's all about search messages that we get sent. Like:
xmung -draw -more -porn
or
mcDuffies -I -want -you -now
And such stuff. porn searches are just not in anymore.
2. We didn't have such thread for a long time.
But... dude... you used to start that kind of threads all the time... you were always asking us about aspects of characters and setting of our comics... what's so bad about it suddenly?
3. There are I'm new/I'm back threads, but they're minority to It's my birthday/It's my unniversary threads. Most of people join forum without particular introductory thread, just start posting. I can't honestly put my finger at when most of new people joined, simply because they just crawled in, without a bang.
Now, you called Ghastly's rants against keenspot gems, but why are they gems? They repeat too, usually the same, the only change was when he started advertising on his own, which brought a little lighter tone to his rants, but if we're talking about repetitiveness of forum, threads about hom keen is mean, are the first to mention.
Here are threads that really repeat:
1. Keenspot threads: every once in a while, someone asks how to get to keenspot/what's the difference between keenspace and keenspot/look what keenspot done to us, which usually end up in mentioned rants of Ghastly and other spacers, probably even a long arguement.
2. Technique threads: when someone new asks how we do our comics.
3. Questions on promotion / how to make my comic more popular
etc...
The reason for repeating threads is, new people arive and ask already asked questions, rather than checking at old threads, which is fine to me, but it gets bored answering same questions once in a while.
You see, with Search strings, the thing is we repeat that topic because we want to, because it's interesting to us, but if someone repeats the topic unwantedly, because he didn't know there was such topic already, that's not so interesting.
And after all, you can't say this forum is not dynamic. It changes all the time, things never get back and you can't step in the same river twice:
1. Structure of forum changes. Now, a different set of people than it was last year. Different people - different conversations, even on old topics. Structure of people doesn't go in circles. You might not notice it if you didn't bother to bet to know them.
2. Some events that don't repeat. DNR, Battle Royale, XXX, even thigs like Phalanx's GraphicSmashing, were all events that happened once and could never be repeated even though people tried. They almost set a kind of periods in forum timeline
3. Major changes on forums: adding Off topic junk and Games forum, for instance
4. Crises on forums: the one about VileTerror's banning for instance. Or forum crashs. Maybe not particulary nice events but still bringing in variousity from time to time. Such are random flamers too, once in a while it's fun to have a trol wonder around here and bash him a little. I, too, am said that we didn't have more time to full around with Spoder Man but that's Striker's decision.
...
Come to talk about it, I tried to work out a systematization of generations on forums. I came up with this:
0 generation - posters that were here in first years of forum
1 generation - those who were around when DNR started
2 generation - those who don't remember beginning of dnr but remember the end
3 generation - those who were there when Battle royale ended
4 generation - those who don't remember Battle royale

I don't think it's fair to say we all suck because our admin does. Banning him was Stredwolf's fault, no ours.McBean wrote:I agree, this forum sucks.
Someone like Spoder-Man was only trying to save you all from the monotony of these repeating and constantly off topic threads. And what do you do to repay him? You banned him! He wasn't the troll, you all are! You're all monsters!

Well seeing as you are sans tongue, what being a cyborg skeleton and all, I'm wondering how you'd manufacture the sensation of taste.corgan_dane wrote:That mutant part's always kept me from trying 'em. I think Bean is pulling our legs, although lately his posts are so convincingly mysantropic that I can never tell how serious he actually is.RPin wrote:I don't think it's fair to say we all suck because our admin does. Simple! I steal the tongue of a fleshy, imperfect monkey I've killed in battle, and mesh with it temporarily, to enjoy the tender taste of the mutant squirrel.Vorticus wrote:Well seeing as you are sans tongue, what being a cyborg skeleton and all, I'm wondering how you'd manufacture the sensation of taste.corgan_dane wrote:That mutant part's always kept me from trying 'em. I'm just gonna chime in with three little points...
1. I am Generation 4...which is why you all sound like Tasmanians to me...
2. You are all a bunch of mental cases who have trouble holding a coherent conversation with anything more advanced than a recorded message...and
3. That's probably why I enjoy coming back.
Now...what was this thread about again? Oh yeah, circles...
At least they don't have sharp edges...
