I been ridiculously poor as hell this year, and haven't bought that many records. I'll see what I can come up with. but Grinderman and Hercules and the love affair would have been on my list so I'll have to see what I can come up with. maybe a ten list I should be able to manage that.McDuffies wrote:I'm calling out Phact to make a list that has zero overlap with these two.

Not sure the new Hercules album is out yet? Probably late enough in the season to carry over into next year's poll if it has.

Yeah, they've never been great at editing themselves, and that's why you don't see them on my list.McDuffies wrote:I Just wish they compacted it into a 10-song album of the strongest material instead of stretching in into 16 songs.I was pleased to find The Suburbs is better than Neon Bible.

Two albums that should be released these days and I'll probably like them both... though you english people might find them less interesting...

In unrelated sad news, the great Captain Beefheart died a few days ago.

Cute.
Every year I consider doing something like that. Then I remember how much work it is and how lazy I am.

Honestly, I'm pretty much just listening to the Sup Pop catalog lately, with a bit of electronic chill/lounge mixed in.McDuffies wrote: They do rock. I wanna see your top 10 list.

Hurrah for Arcade Fire I guess. First artist to win that I've kinda given a fuck about since OutKast.

This is the happiest I've been about the Grammys for years (last year doesn't count I only cared about Taylor's wins) a lot of the wins were unexpected - Esperanza Spalding beating out Bieber etc - it's nice to see actual musicians winning out over the typical lip-synching pop-garbage.Yeahduff wrote:Hurrah for Arcade Fire I guess. To be clear I enjoy plenty of lip-syncing pop-garbage. But it's nice to see the Grams out of their comfort zone.

I don't like it when good groups get crappy awards, because that kinda sorta gives legitimity to crappy awards. If I was Arcade Fire, I'd pull a woody allen and wouldn't even show up for the ceremony. The whole award is meaningless even when it's given to a good group.
Also new Amanda Palmer album is pretty hot.

While I'm no fan of awards myself -- entertainers in general spend way too much time patting themselves on the ass -- I don't think I'd go so far as to say that the Grammys are illegitimate or meaningless. As with any official recognition, it represents an opportunity.

Re: Get Ya Freak On.
I think for a band like Arcade Fire it gives a good amount of publicity. As an actual award, eh.
Picked up the new PJ Harvey yesterday. Getting a lot of buzz, looking forward to listening to it presently.

Still sad Owl City didn't get it, their work on the Legend of the Guardians film was epic.

Re: Get Ya Freak On.
Oh, I think that the list of previous grammy winners speaks enough for itself, grammys indeed are illegitimate and meaningless. Award ceremonies are always giant ego fests, yet despite that one tends to have a certain respect for some of them, like major European film festivals or Nobel prizes ('cept for peace) in my case. But there's rarely been a major award as meaningless and unimportant as Grammy. As crappy as Oscar is, an interesting Oscar winner will at least get a raised eyebraw from me, and is probably flattering as a notion that someone thought your film was that good. Grammy doesn't even begin to approach that kind of credibility, since there's not even an impression that jury heard the albums in question - but rather watched it's sale figures.
Anyways this summer just might be great for me.
