"The Guide" doesn't have a lot of meaning for the casual visitor but the genre links, such as "Sci Fi comics" does. Anyway, the whole Guide is a hugely daunting thing for a newcomer.

Aye, this comes under ergonomics again. The name "guide" implies, to me, a guide to using keenspace. I'd sooner click on that button than click on the button marked gear. The option to search for comics is a better introduction.
And as for the wiki, it's new. It didn't exist when the competition started. It can be added in easily enough.
VileTerror, the page you are talking about, look on internet archive.
Pog randomness. The formula for the newsbox/newshack is simply "select all comics that have been updated in the last 7 days and are between this and that rating and display one." The formula for that works for displaying ONE image, and involves no writing to the database.
For the "POG" system, something needs to change, and really, it would largely be dependant upon being able to to write to the database or not. It can either be a weighted system, where when a pog is selected, it then gets weight+1 and sinks to the bottom of the deck, or it can be based on updates like the newsbox, so it only shows pogs that are active comics, or it can even be fine tuned further so that it only shows comics that updated that day.
I was planning on having something like that appear in the news page iframe at some point, but never wrote the backend to it.
As it is right now I'm busyyyyy with things and I go back to canada in 3 days, so if I don't complete the siteadmin redo by then, then it get's shelved and you get stuck with the ugly version I wrote more than two years ago.

I've just noticed my PM Inbox is rather full. An attachment might bounce or whatever they do in PM. I'm sorting it out but it might be best if you email.
