From what it looks like, one could think I've been avoiding this thread on purpose. It's not true.

If you don't mind John, I'm going o reply to your e-mail here:

It's really cool that my name came up for a possible person to do the cover. But I'm not quite so sure about what exactly you guys need of me. For one, the fact that I'd have no control over how the prints are going to be makes it a real challenge. One thing is designing for the internet where the only limits are the ones of your imagination, and another is designing for print where you have to think of costs and what not. From what i get, this cover should look just as good in a quality paper with colors as it would on printer paper and B&W.

Another thing is: what should be on the cover? My art is most definitely not the thing I'd showcase seeing as how this is about proving that keenspace comics don't suck. NO FALSE MODESTY HERE, I'm just being practical.

Third thing: what kind of deadline are we talking about? Because there's a lot going on in my real life right now, and while I do have interest in this project, it can't be right away.

Maybe I can answer a couple of these.

The deadline was mentioned to be around September 15th, unless it needs to get pushed back more. Faub also emailed me the link to the participant list: http://stripedb.freeshell.org/minicomic.html .

The cover itself is, and I quote (from faub's email)... "Color only needs to be 300 dpi according to both Dreamweaver Press and ComixPress. Basically, it will need to cover 5.5" x 8.5" somehow, at 300 dpi that's 1650x2550." Also, I think it's in CYMK color.

Oh! So all these questions have been answered already? Serves me right for skipping posts... My bad!

Anyways... Sep 15 is really tight, and my computer is not optimized to work with CMYK... But I'll do my best. I still need to know what's going to be on the cover. Will it be something like the cover of the KS free comic?

Space Coyote has effectively said "no." Also
Space Coyote wrote:Random opinion: I really don't think the "free" part should be that emphasized on the cover. After all, when you look at a product, you admire it first, -then- find out the cost. What should be emphasized the most on the cover is the fact that these are comics online. Online, being the keyword. Because it's the fact that these are comics that are exclusively published on the internet that makes this sampler unique.
Rpin, there are a couple reasons I would choose your artwork above other people's. Your coloring style is very pastel yet your lines are black. If someone were to photocopy the cover, the color would bleach away and they would still have a good outline image. You were recommended for the task more than once in the thread so I'm not playing favorites here. 8) It's a good thing when the people submitting are happy with the person making the cover. Your artwork is very dynamic. You've done some really nice desktops that in themselves would make great covers. I happen to like the way you draw. You haven't said you wanted to submit a page so getting you to do the cover would be a way of getting you into the sampler. :D AND you have a comic on Keenspace which is reason enough.

Besides, I would like to see several people submit covers or cover designs. That would give us a chance to vote for the best one or a layout that everyone could collaborate on. If it's a burden, don't submit anything and we'll just bug you again for the next issue.

What what whaaaat? You make me sound so cold-hearted. I said I WANT to do the cover! Very much so. I just don't want to do one for a contest since that means there's a chance it won't be chosen, thus my time would be going to waste. I would love to do the cover, otherwise, and I would do my danged best to make it appealing, eye-catching, and representative of Keenspace. I would also incorporate different drawing styles (I CAN do stuff other than anime, you know) to show the diversity of Keenspace. I think I can come up with something most people here can appreciate (I say "most" because you can't please everyone).

So yeah, maybe some other issue, if you want to hold a contest for this one.

Oh! I guess I should add something else -- Faub emailed me a couple days ago asking if I wanted to help with the cover. I don't think it was mentioned in the topic, and I don't want people thinking I'm just rudely shoving my butt into this whole project.

Since he also asked RPin/Space Coyote, and all of us are worried about wasting effort for a vote-off cover (well, I don't know about Pin, but I am), how 'bout a collab job? I PMed Mr. Rodrigo about it.

I've never personally done a collab for a drawing, so I'm not so sure how it'd work. But it sounds like something like that would make things less-stressful, individually.

From personal experience, I say a collaboration would make things MORE stressful.

8) This is why I don't want to do the cover. I'm continually misrepresenting people.

If the deadline is too restrictive, it can be moved. We're using it because it's the only one that's been suggested (and there are two cons in the Saint Louis area at the end of the month. It would be nice to take samplers to them.)

I never got to see the Keenspace free comic so I couldn't tell you. I think a cute picture with the Keenspace logo would be plenty, though. If you want to get artistic and meaningful, be my guest.

I just can't help but picture Kisai on the cover, but that's because she's the closest thing Keenspace has to a mascot. Well, other than what's-her-name who was on the Free Comic Book Day thing... but Kisai seems to be more well-known, loved, and drawn. Not to mention she's on the homepage.

Okay, sexy fat demons full of icee-y desserts for your viewing pleasure. I do realize that it is choppy, but that's be best MSPaint scaling does. It looks better if done elsewhere.

I vote that if Kisai is the Mascot, we should make her as sexy as cat-girlishly possible.

That... might kinda send the wrong message. But hey, if we want to catch people's attention with sex appeal as so many comic covers do, it'd work. Then there's "cute appeal." I'm more into "cool appeal" myself.

Considering many find her attractive and she has been drawn to look sexy and sultry before *coughGhastlycough*, it was hard to tell whether that was a joke or not.

I'm all for Kisai being the mascot of the cover.

But I don't know if Kisai should be drawn as an anime cat-girl (even though that's pretty much what she's protrayed as). As said before, Keenspace has many excellent non-anime comics as well.

I know that a spiffy anime-Kisai image in public would attract people and all, but some people would get all put-off by the anime-ness.

[Edit] I guess that's where making it "representative of Keenspace" comes in. Nevahmind. >_>

[EditEditEdit] Because my over-usage of italics annoys me.

Why not have a cover with multiple-Kisai drawn in different styles? (anime, realism, hyper-cartoonish, etc. etc.)

That's a neat idea! I think I'd try to show more than one character though, as wonderful a mascot as she may be. I'd go for showing characters from the comics participating (maybe in a discreet way, so they don't all overwhelm the cover).

I guess if the other styles are shown, making the Kisai all anime'd up wouldn't be a biggie after all.

I dunno... If you look at the thread with all the fan art, there's a huge variety of styles.
