T-shirty goodness

Post by Bek »

I'm interested in making some T-shirts based on my comic, but Cafepress and Zazzle don't have the colors of T-shirts I want (red, specifically). The only place I've found that has online store capability and dark shirts is Printmojo. Has anyone else worked with these guys? They seem to be pretty small at the moment, but that could be a good thing. They also have a pretty high minimum order of 24, which has to be prepaid. That works out to at least $160 outlay per design.
Does anyone know of other vendors? The other option is to get the shirts locally and sell via Paypal. But then I have to deal with shipping and such.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

p.s. to avoid repeated posts: 99dogs has very limited colors, but good product selection, so if someone is less picky on colors they're a good idea. I specifically need red, so they're out for me.

There's http://www.99dogs.com They have a few other options, but I"m not sure if they have red, or not. Plus, I think the Zazzle shirts are better quality. Whatever you do, DON'T go with Cafepress.

Is the reason that so many people are against Cafepress is because their merchandise is crap??? :-?

Several reasons, really. First, yeah. Their T shirts at least, ARE crap of the lowest kind. So far the mug I got from them has lasted, though. But back when I was with them, I made some money one month. Then I got an email saying that if I made some money, but didn't meet a quota, they'd charge me $20 for processing. Yeah, I dropped them like hot cakes.

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard they've started trying to charge you if you want to leave their service. Anyone know?

how could they charge you for that? All you have to do is not put any links to the store page.

Screenprinting

Post by Cortland »

I took a printmaking course in college and learned how to make my own t-shirts with screenprinting. I suggest looking around your town for a screenprinter. Even really small towns like Wayne, where I went to college, had a screenprinter, and they can help you out. They'll most likely be able to print on anything you want with multiple colors and everything.

It's often very good to go local, if you can. In addition to supporting your local economy, you can also strangle the idiots in they screw up your shirts! :D

Hmm... so what could you offer instead?... Loxie & Zoot temporary rub-on tattoos? ;)

Having looked around a bunch more, I think I'm down to two options:
Printmojo: they run the online store and handle shipping and stuff, but I'd have to lay out a LOT of cash.
vs.
Local printer +paypal: cheaper setup (lots of good printers locally) but I'd have to figure out how to deal with shipping.

I've seen lots of comics who do their own merchandise pimping, so how do you guys do shipping? USPS or some other shipper? Flat fee or sliding scale? Run to the post office constantly or periodic shipping? Inventory or pre-orders? Spill it!

Thanks for the help!

I noticed that the image from T-shirts comes off too when you participate in wet T-shirt competition.

If you go to the USPS website and you know how much your package weighs (just put together a sample), you can figure it out by entering in the weight what it will be to ship to different countries with different methods, then just go from there. US and Canada are, I think, always the same.
