Eh... what? *puzzled*
I think Van has a very good chance of being spotted. I just wish he wouldn't pick fights with the Spotters so much though, because I suspect the Fab Four are less likely to Spot someone who might create disruption in their ranks. Not only might it contribute to the splitting up of a company, but it might also discourage potential new artists from joining because they don't like some of the people already on the roster. (If I'm not mistaken, this fact contributed to Space Coyote turning down Keen. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this one).
Back then, there weren't that many webcomickers, so I think Keen couldn't afford to pick and choose too much based on the level of professionalism of the comic creators. But now it's different. There are just a lot more toothin good webcomics out there then there used to be that turning down one disruptive but talented artist in favour of a less talented but easier-to-work-with-one is not that big a deal.
Frankly I don't think that the one year mark is going to be as important as it used to be anymore. The competition is getting fiercer and fiercer now that webcomics are becoming more and more of a serious businesses.
CYS started in June 2003, It moved to Keenspot by May 2004: Less than a year.
I started on March 30th 2003 and got Smashed (yes I know how funny that sounds) on February 2004. Less than a year again.
I'm pretty sure Edge the DevilKnight wasn't one year old before it got Smashed too...
And there are other comics I know that got offers but who turned them down. They too hadn't reached their 1 year mark either.
With all the new collectives and subscription sites cropping up (Keen, MT, PV Comics, and that other one I can't remember the name of) it's becoming more of a race to find the best comics out there and get them into your group before the other teams do.
Mark my words, when the new WebComicsNation comes up, the competition is going to be even stronger as the ambitious few start up their own Keenspot-esque sites.
Come then, waiting one year might end up being waiting too long.
