Browser Question
>>
I don't go to Keenspot, but in any case my IE settings would keep the spycrap from working. A Linux-happy friend of mine told me to download Spybot and he assured me it would come up with a bunch of crap. I guess he assumed this because I use IE. The only thing Spybot came up with was a list of cookies. I could keep those particular types of cookies from being created, but I am too lazy to go to the IE settings and click on a couple radio buttons just to do that. Some people are more inclined to get a different browser than to just change a couple settings. Congratulations to them for being different.
The goofy Javascript or whatever thing that has been going around is serious, though, so changing settings won't help. I can barely wait for MS's next operating system, which will run on .NET. (Imagine an operating system that runs on Java.) The security and stability benefits of this are great.

Wait?Chaos Cricket wrote:It's not anything major, just a couple of annoyances. First, IE keeps deciding to just create a new folder entitled "Links" in my Favorites folder at random. And by "at random" I mean basically every time I open up the Favorites folder. Also, when I try to load some websites, I get this "PerfectNav" thing. It's like something's hijacked the browser and redirects it to that page. Eventually I can get into the page I wanted to actually go to, but it's a pain in the ass. I've run Ad Aware and Norton Anti-Virus, and came up with nothing related to that stuff (though I was able to clear out a lot of spyware on my machine...ugh). It still does the PerfectNav thing and I keep getting those damn Links folders (I deleted 30 of them last night in the space of about 2 hours). I'm hoping a different browser wouldn't give me these problems, though that may be a vain hope.
You're running Windows XP too?
Mine IE browser deosn't do any of this.
In fact, it hasn't done any of the previous problems people before me have listed; and I don't have any virus or spyware protection software.
Wierd.
But anyway, FireFox is pretty good.
I have both broswers, and use both of them; depending on what mood I am in; and also because I'm designing my site to have a IE compatible version and a FireFox version.
So I use them both, and I like them both.
But I haven't had any of the problems ya'll have listed.... have I just lucked out?

I am quite happy with IE. Then again, I download updates as needed, know to terminate those requests for software installs, am a big fan of ad-aware, and when all else fails, am not afraid to hack the registry.
Besides, when you have to support the software, you might as well regularly use it too...

Ad-aware is nice, but it has a difficult time finding all the coolwebsearch/about:blank trojans. I run ad-aware alongside Hijack This! and, of course, regular registry hacks and updates when approriate. It's really the best way.I am quite happy with IE. I personally use Opera in Windows (because it's fast) and Konqueror in Linux (because it's fast).
I loathe Mozilla/Firefox/Firebird/Fireplatypusorwhatevertheyregonnacallitnext. I dunno why. Maybe cause it's too slow for my tastes. Maybe it's just because I hated Netscape back in the day....
And I use IE as a last resort, because 90% of the Internet uses it. Except on my server, where it seems split 50-50 (not counting bots). Ah well.
If I used a Mac, I would use Safari. It's basically Konqueror underneath the hood.

Is cleaning up after your past self dishonest or just prudent?
I'm not sure, but I'm doing it in hopes it's the latter. [Signature deleted.]

I think I need to bring up that part where I'm not computer savvy again.Joel Fagin wrote:
Um... They're the same thing. Netscape is just Mozilla with the logo changed and, as I understand it, AOL spyware included.

I don't follow any browser history, but my best gues is because they are the same thing, not a hybrid. At least not significantly hybridy.ruxen wrote:I think I need to bring up that part where I'm not computer savvy again.Joel Fagin wrote:

though - i have to switch to IE to get windows updates still? (other than the ones that windows update sends me anyways)
and secondly - is there any way to make new page links appear as new tabs instead?

If you have a middle mouse button and if it can click, middle mouse click on the link and it'll open up in a tab. Or just hold down Ctrl when you click a link and the link will open in a tab. Ctrl + Tab to flick through tabs, Ctrl + T for a new tab and Ctrl F4 to close a tab by the way. I loves teh shortcuts ^.^clawster wrote:i've just switched from IE to firefox coz of this topic

Brand name continuity. By calling it Netscape, you automatically aquire all the people who used to use Netscape and with luck, they'll trust the name and not ask questions.ruxen wrote:No I meant, mush the two names together to form a hybrid name, or Pie.
