inspirations...

Post by Dragonsong12 »

Just a curious question...

I know that personally, my work is constantly being effected by other works that I see and hear and read. I know that my comic has been inspired by a lot of different things (likely more than you'd care to hear about in one post  ) and when I got thinking about that, I wondered what sort of inspiration was behind many of your comics. I do read a lot of them, and I was wondering where these ideas came from. Some of them, I think, are obvious, but others, I'm nt so sure of. What I'm talking about here is concrete works that you find have had an effect on your own styles or ideas.

Example...
My own inspiration has mostly come fro three sources. Two of them are comic series': "Tellos" and "Crimson." It was after reading these that I decided to create my own comic. And even now, when I'm not sure about layout or coloring or effects, I'll pull out an issue and look to that for answers. Story-wise, I've gotten a lot of ideas from the writings of E. Nesbit. (And I'll give a prize to anyone who can figure out just WHAT I've taken from her  )

...but those are some of my ispirations, what sorts of things inspired your comics? Let me know, I've been wondering about this for a while :D

You got that from Monty Python!

My inspirations (that I can remember) are vast and variable. some include the movies Go, Groove, Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis, the comics Sonic The Hedgehog, Scud, Pounded, MegaTokyo and Exploitation Now.

Nothing special but I recommend that EVERYONE watch those 3 movies.

Hm....well, a lot of my ideas come from stuff I've already written for my novels-in-progress. That includes character concepts, subplot formats, and tone. My writing is inspired by Douglas Adams and David Eddings...I try for a mix of insanity and epic plotline, which from what I can tell seems to be entertaining. :D

When in doubt, I think: "What would Douglas Adams do?" And then I try and do something a little less British, but still fitting. ^_^

As for direct, "look at this and you will know what to do" inspiration, I'm not really sure. And I have no idea where the basic concept for the plot and characters came from in TPR...none at all. :P

But as for being constantly affected by the works I see, hear, and read, I suppose that's a given for me; all that information gets absorbed, and whatever comes out must be a product of the whole.

I hope that made some sort of sense. ^_^

Edit: I remembered there's a part coming up that was directly inspired by Miyazaki's "Spirited Away." Specifically, the scenery of the world he created for it.

I agree wholeheartedly about Metropolis. One of the better anime I've seen in a long time.

As for my personal inspirations, typical fantasy fare is a primary contributor, which is fairly obvious. Aside from that, video and role-playing (tabletop, that is) games are other major factors.

When it comes to comics, I'd have to say that Acid Reflux, RPG World, and Adventurers! are the three biggest influences on Kari & Doug in the online realm.

Of course, as I've said before, the characters themselves are, more than anything else, a reflection of the two sides to my personality.
Kari & Doug - You could easily do worse. Far, far worse.

"Bloom County", Lovecraft, and various bits of conspiracy lore for the old "Mythocorp"...I'm not certain what's inspiring "The Hamish MacCreagle Action-Adventure Hour" other than my fondness for pulp adventure. The title obviously owes a debt to old radio and television serials, and maybe the storytelling down the line will reflect that, but not at present.

My current Gripping Tale of Men, "Low Orbit", is inspired word-wise by the likes of Raymond Chandler and Philip K. Dick, and art-wise by such things as "Blade Runner" and "Batman Beyond".

I try not to nick things from other web-comics.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

My inspirations come from real life events. Something'll happen that's sort of funny, and I'll exaggerate and/or modify it to make it suitable, then stick it into the comic. Or I'll just make it up from scratch, like demons invading. I don't know where I got that from.

Bloom County!!! YEAH!! Now you're going to make me cry - I still won't accept that it is gone...

My inspiration comes from watching humans, watching commercials and reading the newspaper. Its amazing how much stupidity there really is in the world; which is good for me, because then I can use it as a limitless supply of ideas. Anything that makes you stop and say "That doesn't make sense" is material for the Whiner.

My art style comes from every cartoon-esque artist I have ever viewed the works of. They all have something that I like and pull into my style. I guess the biggest are Maui, Archimer, and Bill Waterson (Calvin and Hobbs).

hmm... i'd have to say most of it comes from my friends, from either back in the day when we played tabletop RPG's and recorded Radio Show skits or my friends now (pretty much the same ones) and any inspirations they give me when i bounce ideas off of 'em

other than that, i'd have to say quasi-older to old comic books and cartoons in general

Aside from Calvin and Hobbs and Bloom County, my inspiration comes from a little singing Christmas tree.

Just about anything in life is fair game for the Whiner. Stupid people, however, are the choicest of topics. They make up 99.9% of the population - thats several billion people I can use for ideas. The possibilities are endless.

Most ideas I get from real life, the news, or classes I'm taking. If ya read Stupid Melon Dumb Egg carefully you can get an idea of what exactly those classes are. Now all of you are going to urge me to enroll in Human Sexuality. :D

Originally I intended to have an anime style, but I never got really good at it, so I mixed in some stuff from Chinese Painting and from architectural sketching.

My inspirations are MegaTokyo, Dilbert, and Emeril.

Yeah, since they had a sitcom about a cooking show, I figured there should be one about a game show.

So, now you know the rest of the story.
