Comedy/epic/serious/good
story, and I also do a gag comic. with no storyline whatsoever.
c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)

3.is this truly freedom of expression?
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
Only if you choose to censor your comic yourself. There are no restrictions to what you can do.
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
The diffrence there IS freedom with the online form. Published comics more often than not, are made 'fun for everyone'.
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
Depends on the comic. As much as one wants.

1. How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
free space for me to put my pretty little drawings
b. how do most of you make your comics
draw them in pencil, scan them, edit them in Photoshop and MSPaint
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
ftp
2.what/who are the topics?
a. what drwing style is used (i cant belive i asked that, its obviosly manga is the overwhelming majority)
my own self-developed style
b. what kind off stories do the tell
superhero/supervillian type stories with a sprinkle of stupid and a dash of death
c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
umm... Jeff? i don't get it...
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
no
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
since online comic makers don't generally get paid for what they do and aren't restricted by someone in what they can do, online comics are far less generalized then published comics in humor, layout and quality
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
depends on the comic

1. How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
It's a funky server that lets me post up my comics and pictures for free. It's terrific.
b. how do most of you make your comics
I sketch out what I want on rough paper, then I proceed to sketch it out on a good piece of paper (usually 8.5 X 11 printing paper cause I'm cheap. ^_^; ). Then I ink it using my favorite black ONYX pen, although I wish I had a thinner one and scan it in. If any editing needs to be done, I use Photoshop 6.0.
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
WS_FTP
2.what/who are the topics?
a. what drwing style is used (i cant belive i asked that, its obviosly manga is the overwhelming majority)
I like to think that I have my own style that is heavily influenced by Manga. I don't know, you can say for yourself what my style is by visiting my site (shamelessly promoting my site, I know. =P)
b. what kind off stories do the tell
My comics are pretty random although the odd story arc comes up every now and then. And when they do, hoo-boy, look out cause they make NO sense.
c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
Everything is drawn by hand, by me.
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
I always thought there was (some sites I see have a little image that says "PG:13" and such). I like to put a warning up for some of my comics (I can sometimes make some crude jokes).
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
Money is no longer a restriction. There's also a growing readership for online webcomics. It's becoming pretty popular. You can also get away with more vulgar things online than you can in print. Heh heh heh ... >=)
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
Depends on who draws the comic.
ugh... now that im through that id like to say thanks if you answer, and sorry to make you do this.
Is this some sort of trick question? =)

Draw, ink, scan, Photoshop, paste in Illustrator, export as jpeg, post with dreamweaver

I used an anime inspired simplictic comic book art to tell an urban drama, with some sci-fi adventure thrown in for enjoyment.

1. How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
Here's the thing - the little triumvirate in this account has three different styles, so I'll just write the initials of the comic before the answers.
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
N: I speak for all of us when I say that they're somewhere in California and that's all I know.
b. how do most of you make your comics
N:I lay out the frames and trace them onto another piece of paper, draw in pencil on the new sheet, then ink the outlines on the original. Then I scan and add color & text on the computer.
CA: I lay out frames, draw and write by hand in ink, then Simon scans 'em for me.
Dtr: Same basic idea as NeTrek, but I don't add color; I shade by hand.
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
N: We all ftp.
2.what/who are the topics?
a. what drwing style is used (i cant belive i asked that, its obviosly manga is the overwhelming majority)
N: A little manga mixed with a drawing style I once used; this is most obvious in the way I draw hands.
CA: Take a look at Class Act and see!
Dtr: As manga as i can make it.
b. what kind off stories do the tell
N: A boy and girl who have crushes on each other get yanked into cyberspace and wander around aimlessly.
CA: No real story; quick little gags about school.
Dtr: WolfgangD must travel around, activating superheroes left and right.
c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
N: Simon Shepherd, with sub artist and shirt gurl Diana Buch pitching in
CA: Jack Sergei
Dtr: WolfgangD (an obvious pseudonym)
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
Not really; we kinda censor ourselves.
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
N: More deadline freedom; I can speak out a little more if I need.
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
N: None of us tries to make social commentary, although sometimes I get nasty about radio stations.
Hope this helps.

Oooh! Ooooh! Me! Me! I love questions about <i>me</i>!
1. How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
On keenspace
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
Owned by a group of people, they run banner ads to get income, they are a subsidiary of keenspot, and it's located In California.
b. how do most of you make your comics
I hand draw my comics, scan them, delete all the text in Photoshop, screentone them in Photoshop, letter them, then turn 'em greyscale and post 'em.
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
FTP! Yah!
2.what/who are the topics?
Two women running a fetish shop in a small town.
a. what drwing style is used (i cant belive i asked that, its obviosly manga is the overwhelming majority)
Manga-style!
b. what kind off stories do the tell
Usually mini plots tangled up in an overall big plot and divided by chapters.
c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
Me. Yanagi-San! ^^ I do all the work.
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
Yes, the web is the best place for non-censorship. Best of any media.
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
Not at all! (Ahhh~ love the 'net! ^^)
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
Online freedom, you're your own boss, and you can do things your way. Published freedom isn't really freedom unless you are self-publishing. Otherwise, you have editors, and not pissing off the public to worry about.
c. How much political/social expression is there in these comics.
In mine, there is a reflection of society, which I intended. Right now my main characters are embroiled in a lawsuit by a major talk radio personality trying to shut their fetish store down. As for other comics, I have no idea. Some have a lot, and some don't.
I hope this helps! Don't fail 11th grade english! ^^;;;

1. How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
Keenspace is a free automated web comic hosting/updating service.
b. how do most of you make your comics
Ink on paper - not much in the way of artists' paper, special pens or incredibly long artistry sessions in my particular case, usually a biro does the trick.
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
ftp, etc.
2.what/who are the topics?
a. what drwing style is used (i cant belive i asked that, its obviosly manga is the overwhelming majority)
Stickmen, in my case. Not as prevalent on Keenspace as you might think.
b. what kind off stories do the tell
Not utter randomness: randomness with a planned skew to it. Crazy things may happen, but they will continue to exist for a period of time and maybe affect later events.
c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
Too many to name.
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
None whatsoever, near as I can tell.
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
There is far more freedom online - not everyone can get published even if what they write is perfectly acceptable to the general public, because they just aren't good enough. Whereas any fool can publish online.
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
Very little as far as I know, but I don't really read webcomics for their political content, rather their plot or humour.

1. How do you publish your comic?
Many cartoonists use keenspace, since it has their own updating system. But you can use free webhosting or paid webhosting services like Angelfire or Tripod.
a. a little bit you know about keenspace
A free webhost for strictly web comics and cartoons. It has its own updating system so it automatically updates and organizes your strip archives.
b. how do most of you make your comics
Mostly by hand with India ink.
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
It's required by Keenspace to upload through FTP, however other webhosting services have their own uploading system. Though I believe FTP is the best bet.
2.what/who are the topics?
Politics, social issues, fiscal issues, military issues, and personality.
a. what drwing style is used
No, I don't use Manga or anime style. I'm strictly not for drawing comics using somebody else's style unless of I'm drawing somebody else's characters or doing a group animation. My drawing style consists of using original shading (curls) and a original style that looks semi-gothic.
b. what kind off stories do the tell
Adult Drama and mystery, mostly
c. who are some of the artists
Me
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
Yes, I'm using it to the limits
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
Nope. You can be a Neo-Nazi for all that it matters. I think there's a few here in Keenspace or Angelfire
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
Online freedom is more broad, you can create any comic if you want. But published freedom requires a more adjusted audience. Most webcomics would have to goto an Alternative publisher to get published.
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
A fuck load
Many cartoonists use keenspace, since it has their own updating system. But you can use free webhosting or paid webhosting services like Angelfire or Tripod.
a. a little bit you know about keenspace
A free webhost for strictly web comics and cartoons. It has its own updating system so it automatically updates and organizes your strip archives.
b. how do most of you make your comics
Mostly by hand with India ink.
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
It's required by Keenspace to upload through FTP, however other webhosting services have their own uploading system. Though I believe FTP is the best bet.

1. How do you publish your comic?
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
Keenspace is often very buggy and the server is occasionally bogged down and slow; but it's worth it because hey, it's free.
b. how do most of you make your comics
Most people, myself included, draw the comics by hand, and scan them in. If there's color, most people do it on the computer using Photoshop or a comparable program. A few people are skilled enough with these programs to do the comic entirely on the computer...but not many. There is also a small minority of people who do what are known as "sprite comics", in which the comic consists mainly of computer sprites from video games (these of course are also done on the computer, but deserve their own classification because they are not original images).
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
FTP. That's pretty much the only way I know of. However, there is built-in script on the Keenspace server that simplifies the process, and allows you to update comics days, weeks, years, etc. in advance.
2.what/who are the topics?
The topic of the comic strips are as variable as the artists. There is a proliferation of gamer/computer-oriented strips, but that's mostly a result of the fact that the comics are published using computers; and to an extent people "following the herd".
a. what drwing style is used
Same as above. But like you mentioned, manga (or manga-influenced) drawing styles are probably the most common. But you can really find any drawing style if you really look. My comic doesnt draw from Japanese animation in any way.
b. what kind off stories do they tell
For the third time, it's too diverse to really say outright. However, most strips fall into the "slice-of-life" category, in which the characters lead pretty much normal lives (although some liberties are often taken to make the comic more interesting and/or funny.) The biggest minority is probably the "fantasy" category, in which the characters are a) medieval or b) superfuturistic. Most strips are funny, even the ones that also deal with serious matters.
c. who are some of the artists
Mostly young people from 15-25. A lot of college students. I myself am a highschooler (11th grade, actually). You get a few child prodigies here and there, and there are a good number of parents out there. But for the most part, it's teens and people in their 20s.
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
You bet it is. You can put up ANYTHING here. Seriously.
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
Some people just censor themselves, but that's all.
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
I have a feeling that this is the thesis of your essay
Online freedom and published freedom are really one in the same: the only difference, I think, is that it's impossible to regulate online free speech, even if you tried (the Chinese have tried it, and it doesn't work).
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
There's a lot of social expression in the comics. Politically, there's not much action. That can be blamed on a number of things: 1) The people doing these comics, on the whole, just don't really care about politics 2) the international audience wouldnt necessarily understand political humor from another country, and even international politics is lost on some readers 3) the fear of alienating readers with a differing political opinion.
I myself will on occasion do a political cartoon instead of my normal strip, and I encourage others to do so.

Great idea, by the way. I've often thought about doing a paper on webcomics for either an anthropology course or, and this is what I'd rather do, for a cartooning course.
1.How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
I use Keenspace because, first and formost, it’s free. Plus it has a strong community.
b. how do most of you make your comics
First, I draw them out with pencil, then ink. I do most of the shading with grayscale pencil, and it shows. Then I scan them in and adjust them on the computer. I resize them, put in dividers for panels, fill in the background, and do lettering. Sometimes I touch up the image with a little dramatic gleam here and there. I’m a sucker for lens flares. I rarely do color comics, but when I do I like to go all out.
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
ftp all the way
2.what/who are the topics?
See below, I guess.
a. what drwing style is used (i cant belive i asked that, its obviosly manga is the overwhelming majority)
Well, there’s also a LOT of sprite comics out there, too. Interesting how they’re developing into genres, isn’t it? Mine is heavily manga influenced, but what I’m trying for is a nice blend. I’m trying for my own style, really. I appreciate the sheer emotion manga can produce, but since my strip is serial, I try to simplify and combine the style with others.
b. what kind off stories do the tell
There’s a constant plot, hopefully with humor. Sometimes it’s the humor that drives it, sometimes the plot. It’s high fantasy, I suppose you could say, drawn from a distorted view of different mythologies.
c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
Just me.
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
I think so. I guess I could go into Foucault’s panopticon, right? ;} No, really, there’s no limit but ourselves and our abilities. And the limit of the medium, I suppose.
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
Not really. That’s one of the greatest benefits of having an online comic. Printed comics are so heavily ruled by the editors it’s not even funny. Here you’re free to expand into whatever direction you want and cater to however large or small an audience you like. You can have a comic that caters to the general audience, or restrict it to the gamer population…whatever you like.
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
Er…see above. Think I got ahead of myself
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
Quite a lot, surprisingly. Sure, there are a lot of online political cartoons, but even barring that. For a case in point, go look at Ozy and Millie. As to the social…well, so many of the comics out there cater to the subculture of the author, they’re virtually an expression of that aspect of society, which allows that division to expand and communicate.

1. How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
-On the internet, on my site, daily, on keenspace
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
-Fine service that started in, I think, 2000, out of Keenspot, as an extend that accepts anyone and is (I think) mostly used for regruting fresh blood (I doubt it makes nearly as much money as Keenspot. Is it making money at all?).
Good sides: free, automated, community, lot's of originality and fresh energy of comics (something like pank was in music), good quide - comics listing, easy way of finding lots of comics on one place.
Bad sides: Technical problems due to a lot of work servar does (currently ok for me), a lots of stuff, mostly junk (meaning that their authors post a few comics and then get bored, or don't bother to buy decent graphic program, or any other way of not taking it a least seriously) so it's hard to break through and get noticed, long waiting for account, some people reffer keenspace as "low quality" because "everybody can post on keenspace" (like, anybody can't get a site on geocities), no good way of presenting and advertising comics (newsbox sucks).
b. how do most of you make your comics
-Most of us? Inking on paper I guess. I presume scanning, adjusting in photoshop and then balooning and lettering on computer.
As for me, I do everything on computer, in photoshop, using E-pen tablet.
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
-ftp. I presume that's the most common way, too.
I use ftp-explorer.
2.what/who are the topics?
-Mostly dorm life and fantasy I think.
Me: Ordinary life brought to apsurd with fantasy and adventure happenings. I use situations from real life, exagarate them and make it as crazy as I can. It mixes lots of genres common with web comics. For diversity, I guess.
a. what drwing style is used (i cant belive i asked that, its obviosly manga is the overwhelming majority)
-Majority: Manga, for more serious comics. I think in category of junk, sprite and ms-paint are competitive.
I use combination of french school and what can be seen online. Or at least I hope that I do.
b. what kind off stories do the tell
-Combo of adventure stories with news-paper standard of punchline at the end of every day. Same for me.
c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
-Ugh. I hope you didn't mean me to name as much autors as I know.
Me am Srdjan Achimovich, also known as mcDuffies which is my comic strip name. Just call me Srdjan I of mcDuffies!
3.is this truly freedom of expression?
-Yes
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
-Only self-censorship. I've seen some censore themselves only to attract audience and act "tough".
b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
-In america, there's no freedom in any way, everything is dictated so you might say that it's infinitely more freedom on net. As for Europe, censorship tie is much looser and mainly for magazines. So it's less then infinity, but still more than 1
c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
-Everybody talks about what they know. Naturally, people are concearned about social and political problems. Out of fantasy category, I think there's lot of p/s expression.

A: It's free, it's not always the most reliable in terms of server access, and it has a thriving message board community ^_^1. How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
b. how do most of you make your comics
c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
B: I draw them, ink them, scan them, edit them in Adobe Photoshop Elements, and color them in the same program.
C: I use the built-in FTP in Frontpage right now.
A: Partially anime-style (for the humanish characters) and otherwise, stickfigures and such. What I like to call "simplified."2.what/who are the topics?

c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
B: It's a continuous storyline, with a sort of epic plot, but also the occasional attempt at humor. There's a little romance, angst, and adventure mixed in there too, somewhere.
C: Um...what? I draw the comic...um...and there are other artists who do different comics...like Tyndal and Indy and Yanagi-san, and, well, pretty much everyone else on this board...um...except Shannon and that other girl...^_^ But we forgive them both.

B: There is a lot more freedom online, but a lot less of a guarantee of an audience.
C: A ton. ? Art is all about the expression, dude. That's all it is. If your talking social commentary here, then I think it's present to some extent in most comics. Some are a little more political, but I don't know much about that. I don't really get into the politics much. But social expression...most of the comics, I'd say, are about a group of people doing stuff. So, yeah. Social. Um...

Re: A research paper on web comics (aka) HELP MEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Keenspace is a free webhost for comics. Anyone who wants webspace for a comic can get it. Yes, this does mean the quality ranges from excellent to extremely poor.ego wrote: 1. How do you publish your comic? (the folowing are sub questions, not mult choice.)
a. a little bit you know about keenspace.
I draw them by hand, color them with grayscales using either prismacolor markers or gray inks, and hand letter them.ego wrote: b. how do most of you make your comics
I ftp through internet explorer.ego wrote: c. how do you put them online (ftp, etc.)
I use my own style which is influenced by god knows what. It's rarely been called reminiscent of anything.ego wrote: 2.what/who are the topics?
a. what drwing style is used (i cant belive i asked that, its obviosly manga is the overwhelming majority)
I tell slice of life vignettes. Others tell any kind of story you can imagine. Give me a genre, and I can point out a comic that fits it.ego wrote: b. what kind off stories do the tell
I think the most promising artist is Lee Adam Herold of Chopping Block.ego wrote: c. who are some of the artists (AGH! i hate this, i might as well just say me!)
Every different artist performs to their own sense of standards. Any censorship is self-censorship.ego wrote: 3.is this truly freedom of expression?
a. is there online censorship (not on the forums, on the comics)
With something that is self-published, be it online or in print, there's always going to be more freedom. Whenever you have an actual publisher who approves content, that's where expression can be challenged. I think that's wholly more of what you mean to get at.ego wrote: b. how does online freedom compare to published freedom
Depends entirely on the comic. Some comics are purely motivated by politically or social expression others are pure entertainment.ego wrote: c. how much political/social expression is there in these comics
No worries. Hope it Helps.ego wrote: ugh... now that im through that id like to say thanks if you answer, and sorry to make you do this.

well for the first time ever, people have actually replied to a post by me. so from the amount of them i have come to a conclusion: your all addicted to forrums. but im happy you are, your social addiction to tiny black shapes on computers screens has helped me in my project from hell. (7th layer i presume) i got almost everything i wanted, except that under 2c. (who are some of the the artists.) i actually wanted to say "who are tha artists and why did you decide to do a web comic?" but the teacher rushed us of the computers.
Thagmar was here...
