is Keenspace worth it(or why do you use it)?

Hello all(puts on her flame-retardant trenchcoat in case this is an old, tired topic)...
I'm putting together a dark, online fantasy manga called Fireflies of Winter(I'm hoping to go live with it at www.firefliesofwinter.com by early-mid August). I've always wanted to do a comic of some sort, love to draw, and enjoy the challenge of learning new media(comics are part art, part editorial layout, part screenplay, and all a whole lot of work :) ).
At first I wanted to host with Keenspace, but reading through the Help Center forum has made me reconsider and at least, initially, host elsewhere(I know they're migrating servers right now, but some of the concerns seem to go beyond that). Here's what look to be the pros of Keenspace vs. me-hosting-with-someone-else:
pros of hosting on my own:
-I control the code(I do front-end design/editing for a living, and know just enough back-end that I should be able to manipulate something like the AutoKeenLite archiving system). I don't have to mess with an internal system that likes to crash a lot and not let me in.
-I control the load time(not competing with 1,000 other cartoonists on the same server, not having to include banner ads and obligatory Keenspace links that take time to download). My test site, with daily manga page, currently downloads at 30 seconds tops on a 28.8, and even that makes my web-designer-self twitch. Hearing that it's common(and seeing) that Keenspace sites can take up to 2-3 minutes to load is a huge disadvantage to me.
The pros of hosting with Keenspace:
-It's free(as opposed to $10 a month)
-A built-in community that will almost certainly drive readers my way just by my being in it(dropdowns, contests, general forum presence, etc.).
So, to get around to the point... why are you here at Keenspace? Should I move my site over to it?
For those of you tech newbies, if you could handle the code and didn't care about money, would you leave Keenspace? Is convienence the main reason you're here?
For everyone in general, has being part of the Keenspace community significantly helped your comic gain attention/readership?(nothing like people actually reading your work to keep you at it, you know ;) )
I know I read about one guy who runs mirror sites at both Keenspace and with another host, so that may be an option...
Anyway, thanks for reading!

I might be the mirror guy...
My opinion is basically this...
Even if I worked in webdesign, and didn't care about the $10 a month, I would probably still have a (mirror) site on the 'space. If for nothing else than the community. KS is GREAT for getting your name out there! I don't do too badly by what I want to accomplish, hit-wise, and my comic isn't even in a typical KS genre. You can have a limited site here, and use your $10 host for extra material if you're concerned about the load times (which will hopefully be resolved soon.)
I like KS. Even if it hiccups every so often.
------------------

Keenspace is a very nice service, and full of nice people! Sure, there's problems, but it's certainly not been that bad for me, and I'm stupid about three-inch bees!
Mike "Or am I NOT stupid about three-inch bees?" Leffel

I am a competent back end coder myself, and yet I still use Keenspace!
Why?
1) It's free. $10 a month will grow to $1000 a month if you do a good comic! (I don't, so that's not my concern, really.)
2) MOST of the problems you see in the forums are from people with NO experience doing stuff on the web. I've never had a problem that took me longer than 30 minutes to figure out with Keen. (Except for server side problems that are Nate's responsibility.)
3) Free DNS lookup stuff. Nate just plugs ya in and you're good to go!
4) Community - others have mentioned that.
5) Laziness. If something goes wrong, _I_ don't have to fix, call anybody, or wade through a ISP's help desk.

There are only a few issues that really hurt KeenSpace :
1) Slow loading : occasionally pages are slow to load when things get bogged down. This can be a serious problem. Usually it's not too bad, but when it gets bad, it's BAD! The new server farm should allieviate some of those problems.
2) Updater : occasionally gets bogged down and it takes forever for your site to update. (Hours, sometimes.) This happens about once a month, it seems like. Hopefully this will not happen on the new server farm.
A lot of the things people are griping about that aren't "real" issues :
1) "Nate doesn't answer my mail about my problem!" Nate gets WELL OVER 200 MESSAGES A DAY FROM KEENSPACERS! And a good deal of them are from people who wrote him immediately upon discovering a problem without trying to fix it, ask on the help forums, or without sending any pertinant information. A lot of those he ignores as he works on serious server issues that affect the whole of keenspace. When something goes wrong, he gets a FLOOD of e-mails about the same issue. If Nate hasn't replied to you, chances are :
A) He's aware of the problem and fixing it.
B) You're question is one of the common newbie questions that everybody figures out pretty quickly.
C) He's buried under a mound of other issues that he has to take care of first.
D) Your question is answered in a FAQ or on the message boards.
Nate's a busy guy people. And, I might add, a pretty darn nice one, too. If you have serious problems that you can't figure out and messageboards/keenspacers can't answer them for you, by all means, e-mail Nate. But try and be as thorough as possible in your e-mails. Tell him your url, what exactly you were trying to do, what OS you're using, what program you're using (for FTP purposes), and anything you know about your ISP (Firewall info, etc.) If you don't KNOW that stuff, look it up! You'll learn a lot (and fix a lot of problems) just learning about your system.
2) "Why does it take so long to get a site/message board/etc." Nate and Teri add these in batches. You're looking at a site that does free hosting for thousands of comics, and has 4 employees. Sure, other sites set you up automatically and you're good to go, but they don't set up your archiving systems for you, etc. Nate is working on rebuilding the architecture to make it easier and faster to add/delete sites, so this should improve in the future. If you're feeling annoyed or picked upon because it's taking so long, rest assured, Teri loves everyone! Your site/messageboard/update is coming just as soon as they have time.
3."Keenspace sucks! I hate it!" Nothing can please everybody. ^_^

My advice : try Keenspace out. It's free. Put up a seperate site, too! Why not? Keep whichever one works the best for you!

Thanks all for your input! I've decided to go ahead and run two sites, one on Keen and one elsewhere, and see how things work out.
Watch out for a blatant plug in about a month or so... ;)
--
