Somebody know anything about usenet?

Post by ahvic »

Hi,

Just curious if any individual understands anytihing about usenet on right here.

Seems like an interesting thing, but I don't know anything at all about it or what company I should opt for?

Thanks to the enable, and sorry for my inadequate grammar.

sorry if "General Discussion" is the wrong place for this.

It's the ancestor of today's Internet forums. Usenet's obsolete, though, which makes it nonsensical that the OP's inquiring about companies that specialize in it.

Usenet still has its uses. Just most of which tend to be shady in regions of law.

I'm more of a BBS man, myself.

Wait, BBS is a real thing? I thought it was something Mega Man Battle Network made up. :eyebrow:

I'm getting mixed up with all those acronyms. Or in other words, IGMUWATA.

I remember when I first started using internet, BBS were already mostly gone in favour of www, but whenever you were searching for some more obscure information, you'd eventually run into a reprint of some discussion on some BBS board. Like, if you were looking for more detailed info on crossbows, you'd find a quote of what some old crossbow enthusiast wrote on alt.crossbows.long-crossbows.long-wooden-crossbows.

This thread reminds me of my war dialing days, looking for modems in local exchanges in the hopes of finding an open line to see what it was connected to.

Usenet still exists. It's free. I'm not aware of there being any companies you would "buy" it from, but if one exists, I'd like to get their customer list.

You can check out Usenet groups via the WWW at:
http://groups.google.com/

I still visit one dedicated to the free computer game NetHack, because for whatever reason it's remained fairly active all these years.

That is because Nethack is awesome. And now so fantastically complex that only people who grew up with it have any hope of ever fully comprehending it. :)
