Re: Food thread.
Made shepherd's pie last night with chicken instead of beef or lamb. So... kinda more like chicken pot pie, we suppose, with mashed potatoes instead of pastry.
Either way, it was really effin' delicious.

I am extremely tempted to try roasted june bugs. Apparently they are delicious and puff up like popcorn.
No one else seems to feel my enthusiasm, though. :{

Do they sell them somewhere near you or are you planning on going outside with a net and toss them in a frying pan? Either way I say go for it. Someone needs to break the taboo on eating bugs in America so I can get my hands on some fried grasshoppers.
I've eaten fried meal worms before. They taste a bit like popcorn shrimp.

I'd eat that. There are few things I won't eat. When my anthropology teacher asked the class "Who would eat puppy tamales?" I was one of the few people to raise my hand.MixedMyth wrote:I am extremely tempted to try roasted june bugs. Apparently they are delicious and puff up like popcorn.

That's just a cutesy name for shrimp deep-fried in batter. Popcorn chicken's also served in a lot of fast food places here.McDuffies wrote:popcorn shrimps sound awful enough

You just grab them from outside and fry them. I don't think there's such a thing as a June bug farm.IVstudios wrote:Do they sell them somewhere near you or are you planning on going outside with a net and toss them in a frying pan? But you don't know what they've been fed to.MixedMyth wrote:You just grab them from outside and fry them. My first thought at popcorn shrimps was that they're some kinda artificially flavorued popcorn made to taste like what people who've never had shrimps imagine shrimps taste like.Well, how about shellfish? There's always geoduck!McDuffies wrote:popcorn shrimps sound awful enough
It's like with pork rinds, I mean everyone likes it (if you don't have cholesterol). But here it comes with the actual roasted pig and over there it's bagged like chips, given a decidedly fast-foodish title, and you just know without even tasting it that it's artificially flavoured and filled with so much preservers and chemicals that it's lost it's original flavour.
Man I could mine this for stand-up comedy.

YET! Bugs are used in food all the time! Actually the FDA does not make manufacturers list if bugs are part of an ingredient for food. Many dyes come from insects.
