Re: Mistakes
i had a similar problem, i was working on issue 3 of my webcomic, victory. i got to the middle of the story, at that point, i realize "oh crud! i might have to do a 4 part story" because, i over thought the situation that my characters were in and didn't think i can finish story in 22 pages. part of the reason i took a 10 month hiatus. but, hey at least i finished issue 4, though.
Re: Mistakes
On the occasion that I make a glaring mistake like that, I usually hope nobody notices.
And I usually get my wish.
God I'm so lonely.

Re: Mistakes
Most readers don't notice a slight historical inaccuracy.
If, by chance, somebody points out, just admit your mistake and explain that, for the sake of keeping the comic going, you deliberately chose to ignore it.
Unless it's a very easy fix (editing some text here and there, like changing the name of the month), it would be too much trouble and much more annoying for the readers to backtrack.
I'd take CQC Epics as an example of that. The author keeps rewriting the story and editing already existing pages. He's a true perfectionist i guess. However, this comic is never moving on. So far i've just read 3 different intros and never got to a point where the story is picking up the pace.
When i was drawing SDXF, i guess some of my audience was real military, and so I had people constantly pointing out things like "she's holding the rifle too low, recoil will hurt like hell when she shoots", "shouldn't point the gun upwards when on a chopper" and more...
I took note of those comments and made sure to draw things right the next time, but I didn't bother to go back and draw the page again.

My attitude is that it's actually hystorical documentation that has a bug.Jops wrote:Most readers don't notice a slight historical inaccuracy.

...then you say "I meant to do that".
See, this is why you do alternate history.

Yeah, but by the 11 film someone will make an alternate alternate history and it'll just get really confusing.Cope wrote:See, this is why you do alternate history.

Eh, it's just not the same.Cope wrote:See, this is why you do alternate history.
You know, great thing about writing historical fiction is that, like, half of the story is already written for you! And in public domain!

Re: Mistakes
Yep, McDuffies nailed it on the head. I was orignally gonna do an alternate history but that requires more than just the research it takes to do regular history. You have to know a hell of a lot in order to make up a world that makes sense, and I'm too lazy to take on that task. I don't know enough about cars, or clothes, or whatever else have you, to feel comfortable enough to make my own spin on things. With the bounty that is the internet, most of my research takes only a few minutes as I generally only need surface references (ie, what would a wedding dress look like, would there be telephone lines, et cetera). I know plenty of people are more comfortable building their own world start to finish, but as I prefer to work in the mundane it's best for me to keep grounded in reality and keep close to "canon" as much as possible

But if you have cannons, people will be too scared to point out your mistakes.

Although a lot of those worlds built from start to finish are actually rather derivative of earlier fantasy works and cliches they established.VeryCuddlyCornpone wrote:I know plenty of people are more comfortable building their own world start to finish, but as I prefer to work in the mundane it's best for me to keep grounded in reality and keep close to "canon" as much as possible

Well, you know what they say about there being only 7 basic plots that are told over and over again.McDuffies wrote:Although a lot of those worlds built from start to finish are actually rather derivative of earlier fantasy works and cliches they established.VeryCuddlyCornpone wrote:I know plenty of people are more comfortable building their own world start to finish, but as I prefer to work in the mundane it's best for me to keep grounded in reality and keep close to "canon" as much as possible

Re: Mistakes
Mmmaybe, given that those plots are so broad that using them would hardly count as being derivative. And there's definitely a lot more than 7 basic worlds that can be built.Terotrous wrote:Well, you know what they say about there being only 7 basic plots that are told over and over again.McDuffies wrote:Although a lot of those worlds built from start to finish are actually rather derivative of earlier fantasy works and cliches they established.VeryCuddlyCornpone wrote:I know plenty of people are more comfortable building their own world start to finish, but as I prefer to work in the mundane it's best for me to keep grounded in reality and keep close to "canon" as much as possible
