Cassettes never went anywhere for me.Yeahduff wrote:Cassettes are making a comeback among hipsters and broke ass musicians.
While everyone else is carrying around their puny little mp3 players with a 1000 songs on it they'll probably never listen to more than a few times, I'm hauling around a huge Sony Walkman and some mixtapes that I've listened to a million times. Not only that, the tapes have been dropped, broken, eaten, spliced when the tape snaps, drawn on, and what have you. The sound quality on some is atrocious, but they still play.

You'd be surprised how few 1000 songs can feel like.
But I still rocked the cassette player up until like two or three years ago when my car got got. Would still be blasting old Face to Face and Wu-Tang tapes to this day.

Re: What do you want? (For the holidays)
Well I hope everyone gets what they're hoping for this holiday season!
Also, I never owned a cassette tape in my life. The ones we did have were my parents' and most of the ones that were FOR me and my brother were for car rides to shut us up.
I prefer my music to be digital because I can't tell the difference and it's easier to listen to 1000 songs on an iPod while running on a treadmill than trying to change tapes constantly.

I listen to my music on my ipod but I still need to have the physical CDs, there's just something about having them there where you can pick them up and look through the booklet - plus you can't get an mp3 signed.Laemkral wrote: I prefer my music to be digital because I can't tell the difference and it's easier to listen to 1000 songs on an iPod while running on a treadmill than trying to change tapes constantly.

Keep saving, wait until spring/summer next year. New model at that time. It'll probably be on a 1 year product cycle like the iPhone.Risky wrote:Been asking for an ipad for as long as they've existed... so far I have $50 in apple gift cards. Getting closer! But I expect it will be a "visits from family in lieu of presents" year. Which is, y'know, also good.
Yeah, I don't do those things, so digital is the way to go for me.RobboAKAscooby wrote: there's just something about having them there where you can pick them up and look through the booklet - plus you can't get an mp3 signed.

Nothing wrong with Kinks. I have their "Shape Of Things To Come" on tape. Pretty cool stuff.McDuffies wrote:What's wrong with classic old Kinks album?

Hm, that wasn't Kinks. Apparently it was a song from the movie "Wild in the streets", unless you think of similarly named better known song by Yardbirds.
I'm content with CDs. Remembering what hassle cassettes were, with wearing out from listening, broken players tangling the tape, crappy copies and walkmans that played all 15 minutes of music on 4 batteries - I'm content with CDs.

Re: What do you want? (For the holidays)
I have this problem where everything I want is either too expensive for me to hint to family and friends that I want it, or too obscure for them to possibly remember what it is five minutes from my asking.
So I'm hoping for a new coat and some socks this Christmas! Maybe some of those chocolate coins, those are classic.

Re: What do you want? (For the holidays)
A Sad Cassette Story
When I was young most of my music I listened to off of cassette tapes. In fifth grade I got my first real CD. For a while I wanted to be cool like the other kids so I shied away from cassettes and mostly just listened to radio and CDs. I vowed to never get an mp3 player or iPod.
In ninth grade I came across my old cassettes and decided to give them a run again. Oh how I fell in love! My mom and pop gave me some old cassettes from various times and musicians. I listened to them as much as I could.
Sometime during tenth grade, I noticed lots of low wow-ing on the cassettes, and it got to the point where you would put a cassette in and it would be barely recognizable, generally just a low bass-y wumbling that wasn't entirely pleasant to listen to.
Now I knew it was probably something wrong with the cassette player rather than the tapes themselves, so one day as we were out at a music store I asked them if I might take home one of their cassette player cleaning kits they had displayed on the wall near the cash register. The woman actually laughed and told me she would give it to me for free since it had been there for fifteen years in all likelihood and probably was past its usability date.
I was determined however and I diligently came home with the cleaner cassette and set to work. I tried it on both my boombox and my walkman. To my chagrin it appeared that the saleswoman had been correct- the cleaner had no effect despite the number of times I tried it and how exactly I followed the very clear and understandable directions.
Today the tapes sit in a plastic drawer with some rarely played CDs and miscellaneous broken electronics. How I long to rebuy them on CD or on iTunes, but some of the collections appear to have been released solely on cassette tape.
(in twelfth grade I decided it would be more efficient for me to knuckle down and get an iPod after all, so that I could transport all of my music to college in my own pocket. And RobertBlake, I have 1231 songs on my iPod right now, and except for the ones I turned out not to care for so much, I know them all by heart and listen to them all on a fairly frequent basis
I've got my essay-writing songs, my cleaning songs, my drawing songs, my walking around campus songs... they each have a purpose and a time for playing.)

Did you ever try the tapes in a different player? Or look for a cleaning kit on the internets?

Re: What do you want? (For the holidays)
I have some cassette tapes on a wall in my parents house that is still there. Occasionally I truck some out and play them.
My girlfriend is into vinyl, and we've picked up a few records this year, but alas, my old record player stereo died sometime last year and her parents have taken their record player into their art studio. I have it in mind to buy her a player for X-Mas, but alas again, all I want and need for Christmas first is a job.
Even some freelance writing or art commission would make me feel better.
(How's that for a downer, Cuddly?)

Oh man, such sad stories! Now I'm just wishing everyone money and working, old-fashioned musical devices for the holidays wrapped in glorious bows and shiny doodads.
Or adorable puppies and kittens or other related cute things. You can never say no to those.
