Brazil? While not my favorite film I wouldn't in my wildest dreams call it a b-movie.

I just watched Brazil the other day, too. Gilliam at his least coherent, I think, but a good ride nonetheless. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and The Fischer King are still my favorites.Yeahduff wrote:Brazil? While not my favorite film I wouldn't in my wildest dreams call it a b-movie.
I just got done watching The Chronicles of Riddick. I can't help liking that movie, because it tries so hard to be the 70's epic space fantasy that I love so passionately. A few bare breasts and some brighter colors, and it would have been there.

For some reason I couldn't get into the Fisher King. Maybe because it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I loooved Baron Munchhausen, though.

Re: So anyone seen some good movie recently?
Brazil was a bomb at the time it was made, but it came to be regarded as a major art film since then. It's not a so-good-it's-bad kind of affair like Plan 9, hopefully that's not what you expected.
I'm a big fan of Gilliam, specially Brazil, 12 Monkeys and Fear and Loathing, though most of others are pretty great too. I think that Brazil was actually one of his most coherent; visual style in it was the most consistent of his films, and to me Gilliam is one of a few directors who communicate more through visual style than through actual story.
However I don't think that in Gilliam's case "coherent" is necesarilly a plus. "Brothers Grim" and "Time Bandits" are some of his more coherent films, but that just makes them plain compared to others. "Fear and Loathing" is a purposefully incoherent film, and because if it's topic, and of concept to make the film a string of effects of various drugs, incoherence makes it a stronger statement, and a more unique watching experience. In "12 Monkeys", also, because film is seen from the standpoint of a potentially insane man, disorganizasion works in it's favour.

Baron Munchausen is great. I tried to get people to watch it, but they chose not to pay attention, so their loss. I gave up on trying to show people things I like.

"Baron..." suffered from being too much fun. People want to have fun, but they don't wanna have more fun than they used to.
Anyways, everyone go see "Happy-go-lucky", right now! It's an order!
I should also go see new Woody Allen. It kinda bugs me that it's with that annoying "co-creator of Seinfeld" guy, but I'll watch it anyway.

That is FREAKING good movie. I love it so. Even more after I found this downright enlightening interview with Del Torro. I wish I could find it. :{ It was philisophically marvelous. Still, good movie.KWill wrote:Just finished watching Pan's Labyrinth. Dang...
I just picked up the Burton and Schumacher Batman movies on 1 dvd for $10. It's a mix of great and horrible.

I tried to watch Happy-Go-Lucky awhile back, but couldn't get through it. It was more like Boring-Go-Sleepy.McDuffies wrote:

"Dolls" and "A Scene at the Sea". I'm a huge fan of Takeshi. Great director.

It's a character movie, and you yourself said that you're more interested in plot-based stories.Bustertheclown wrote:I tried to watch Happy-Go-Lucky awhile back, but couldn't get through it. It was more like Boring-Go-Sleepy.McDuffies wrote:

Re: So anyone seen some good movie recently?
It doesn't mean that I can't tolerate a good character study. Honestly, character-driven movies are pretty easy for me to watch, because they're essentially short-form storytelling; they come to an end before the character wears thin. Happy-Go-Lucky simply wasn't interesting to me. Maybe the lead character wasn't happy or go-lucky enough. I dunno.

Re: So anyone seen some good movie recently?
I LOVE the Riddick movies and really think at the end of the day they get a raw deal. They're very different movies and I don't care very much for the animated collection but Pitch Black and Chronicles have a very special place for me. In fact I'm gonna go see if Steven wants to watch them...Bustertheclown wrote:

Out of curiousity, have you watched Mike Leigh earlier? Or Kaurismaki, Kieslowsky, Loach, and of similar "ordinary life" directors?Bustertheclown wrote:It doesn't mean that I can't tolerate a good character study. Can't say I have, but I can't say I haven't. I've certainly heard of some of them and their movies. It's not a genre that I actively seek out, or pay much attention to.McDuffies wrote:Out of curiousity, have you watched Mike Leigh earlier? I watched Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and quite liked it.
Re: So anyone seen some good movie recently?
It's not new, but the original Japanese version of Gojira (not Godzilla-with-Raymond-Burr) is worth checking out; very different than all of the sequels.

Oo. I still need to see that! I'm hoping it'll be a little like Baron Munchhausen.McDuffies wrote:I watched Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and quite liked it.
