25 Essential Expressions

Post by Komiyan »

If you've been on DeviantArt for any amount of time, you're likely to have run across this meme. You draw one character pulling the 25 listed expressions, as an exercise in consistancy, and also for fun. I've been doing one when I had a bit of writer's block, and it was a fun way to keep me going. It might be a nice tool to help out beginners too, and I know we get a lot of those through these parts :)

It'd be cool if everyone had a try, and posted the results here! The blank sheet can be found here, have a go and enjoy it!

Here's mine to kick it off.

Good exercise. I should do this when I'm "brainstorming."

Bean did this a week or so back and I did one to get a feeling for my OCT characters. I might post that here when I get around to scanning it.

this is a pretty cool idea. I used to do something similar. might have to give this a try. one of the best ways to learn expressions is to sit in front of a mirror and draw your own face. it really helps one to see how the face changes as you change your expressions. I still use a mirror when I'm stuck with an expression. I noticed you added some body language. That's sometimes a over looked part of expressions. I can't stand reading the "funny pages" and seeing cartoonist drawing characters as stiff as a 12yr old boy watching skinamax.

I like the pixiv version better. Cuts out the ambiguous ones and has no out of place copyright crap.

Thanks for the translation, Pin, that one's a cool compact version!

MM, those look awesome! I laughed at the 'sad' caption, and the tie in the drunk one :D

And here goes. Not very pretty, as I hadn't drawn the character before and was using the sheet to get familiar with him (and his twin brother):

So here's what he looks like now:

Incredulous

Triumph(ant)
