I stopped posting here because I found too many people on here and in the chat made me much angrier and emoer (that's not a word is it?) than I wanted to be. All of this, I think, was more due to other factors than this forum, really, so I figure I'd start posting here again. So here I am. I'd like to thank Corgan for being partially responsible for that. Of course if my return causes anyone grief or disgust or any number of other negative emotions... blame Corgan, it's his fault.

You son of a bitch, I was so close to being free of you, finally being my OWN person beholden unto no one because the final traces of the House of Legostar, the man himself, had faded away.

And now you're back. *sigh* What is thy bidding, my master?

I wouldn't talk in absolutes about such heated subject, but there is something odd about a 30 year old wanting to hang out with high-schoolers. Most of people will think "that guy is just refusing to admit he's aging" and in many cases, they'll be right.

I mean, many people say that you shouldn't judge a person by their age and that's true, but there are many other things that age affects indirectly. For one, person passes through different stages in life, and these stages are defined not only by social conventions, but also by biology. Your biological clock is ticking. Your health and energy aren't in their peak anymore. It is given that a set of interest of a person who is working 10 hours a day and considering future family and kids, is different from interests of a person who lives with his parents, thinks about tests and girlfriends, and can afford to spend weekday nights boozing.
You you can talk to younger people about I dunno, movies, comics, but when it comes to real-life stuff, personal issues, those things where friendship is really built, the person who is nearly the same age as you is the one who'll understand you the best.
Person goes through the stages when it comes to maturity too. A 15 year old generally looks for different stuff in things he reads from a 30 year old. I'm nearly 30, and I still wanna have fun, but I won't throw myself in a mosh pit anymore, I've given up on trying to change the world, and many stories I liked now look like too simplified view of the world, but I enjoyed them back when my own mind was more attuned to that view.

I have very close friends in a four years margin, and even some good in 8 years margin. When I meet someone much younger than that, I notice it's not a symetrical relationship. I notice that younger people are often looking for my opinion as the voice of the older, and I often give it as such. Though it can be enjoyable conversation or friendship, it's just not as personal relationship as the one I have mith people in my age group.
I've found myself occasionally hanging out with a group of much younger people - like, 8 years or so younger. It was very awkward and I felt much out of place. I don't think it's because of some dumb social convention or some unwritten rules, it's because they're in a life stage that I've passed some time ago, and we don't have much in common.

Although as time passes, margin gets wider. An 8 year old kid will not want to be friends with 6 years old. A 70 year old guy will marry a 55 year old women and noone will make a big deal about age difference. Plus internet makes it a bit moot, cause we all act pretty much the way we're not allowed to in real life.

However a place like this with such a wide variety of people offers a bit more in the way of conversation about life. I have a group of friends who are my own age, and with them I can discuss things about life, but I also have older friends and I have people at work to discuss that sort of thing with. Here there are people I can talk about my hobbies with much more than any other group I know. I could do without the drama sure, but hopefully with age I can detach myself a bit from it (yeah.. right) and see it as what the younger generation is worrying about and be reminded of how much I don't miss being that age. Also us old fogies have something to offer in advice to "youngsters" (i.e. dear god don't do what I did). We benefit from feeling young again (or being glad we're not) and they benefit from the wisdom of our age...

I had such a hard time keeping a straight face writing that.
