Favicons - do they make a difference?

I'm going to take all of five minutes to make a favicon when I get home.

First favicon maker that came up on google.

Can someone explain to me why it has a maximum upload size of 150 kb?

... because if you manage to fit 150kb into a favicon, then someone needs to come to your home and kick your puppy?

Making a favicon might take a while if it's animated.... at least I think you can get animated favicons.

I've seen animated favicons, so it must be possible. I think they're a really bad idea, though.

http://www.animatedfavicon.com/ has one and has a generator thing to make one... most browsers support it, many users do not.

Hmm, that makes sense. I wonder if those favicons are named favicon.ico.exe or the like.

I just spent all of two minutes making a favicon and placed it in workspace. If it's time wasted, I'm sure I'll marginalize it by watching a video on Youtube some time in the future. I guess it'll update the favicon on next update then?

Tried to upload my Favicon and it says I don't have permission. So much for that effort.

Personally when I'm reading a comic, I don't mind seeing a Favicon or not; I'm more intuned to the strip.

Don't worry RandyRaven. I'll go through half the ordeal and drag whoever wishes to answer my question down with me.

So...my comic updated, but my favicon did not. Before I go hitting regular update, is there anything I should have done other than put the new one in the workspace folder?

Odd, I was sure I'd written a tutorial for adding a favicon in the CGWiki. It must have been one the articles that was lost in that big wiki crash a few years ago.

@ Helloearthling: Yes, I think it is worth the effort since the "effort" is all of five minutes. A favicon will always be only 16 x 16 pixels or (now) 32 x 32 pixels. You can't get a fancy portrait into 32 square pixels. For best results, a favicon should be simple and your source image should have few colours. Your source image should also be divisible by 16. So if you start with an image that is 256 x 256 pixels, then it gives you enough room to play with. I use and recommend Favicon from Pics - you upload your image, then download a zip file with the favicon, and animated favicon and instructions on how to use them.

@ McDuffies: Favicons do zero for promotion since the only way to see it is to reach the site first, but as stated already by others, they are good for site recognition.

Close. Stick it in the workspace/webpages folder. Then it'll end up transferred to the root on the public_html side. I think you'll still need to add a link to it in your templates before it'll work.

So...my comic updated, but my favicon did not.

As stated above, move it to the workspace/webpages folder so it gets moved (if you ftp you should see it still in the workspace folder). Just to be sure, you can add the favicon link to your templates. If you have patience, then you can skip the links just to see if it works, and if the favicon has not shown up after a few updates (might need to refresh the cache on your computer), then add the link. Just to see if it'll work without the link.

I didn't even have to add the link code to the page. The favicon loaded as it should have. I did have to clear my cache to see it, so if anyone tries it, remember to clear the cache if it doesn't appear on first blush.

Now we know how to do it. I'll have to get around to adding it to the CGWiki at some stage (in the middle of moving at the moment).
