Best part/Worst part
Because I don't feel like studying for finals tonight.
What's the best part and the worst part about making your comic, as in what do you enjoy the most/least?
I'd say the most fun part is after I'm done inking a page and erasing the pencil lines. It's the biggest step I think in the whole process, not in terms of time (that's coloring, ugh) but in terms of getting closer to the finished product. Mostly because that's the first part of the process that actually is seen in the final work. I never used to ink up until recently, so I'm working on it, and I'm noticing my mistakes faster now, which is a good sign.
The worst part is clothes. Man. It's just so boring. Once I'm done with faces, hair, hands, and feet, I just want to outline the body real fast and get on with life. This is probably reminiscent of the style I used for ... six years? where I would just make the head, a little cylinder body coming out of the bottom, teeny tiny feet, shoulderless elbowless arms, and color it whatever the heck colored pencil was around that looked okay on the person. Stupid people, what with their necks and their torsos and anatomical proportions...
Things that I'm suprised I enjoy: Hands and foreshortening. When they're bad, they're horrible, but when they're good, they're very very good. It makes me sad when people use little tricks to hide the hands out of view- they're such a powerful expressive tool. Working on getting better at foreshortening, which isn't as difficult as I'd expected.
So what about you all?

The fun part is probably the coloring. I enjoy working with brushes. The most annoying part are adding the speech balloons, which are just tedious and time consuming.

Re: Best part/Worst part
The worst part: Anatomy, I always seem to find some error only AFTER I've inked, coloured and scanned the page by which time I can rarely be bothered going back and restarting. But it's getting better.
The best: When I manage to pull off some new/different pose/expression, having only been drawing for less than two years I always get a little happy-dance when I pull off something difficult.
The annoying: The hands. Mine suck but I try not to hide them ... much.
The fun: The clothes, they're a nice shorthand way to flesh out the characters' personalities in subtle ways.

AUGH THE WHITE VOID IT MOCKS ME
The worst part: having a blank piece of paper sitting in front of me.

So you're not a page half-full type?Cope wrote:The worst part: having a blank piece of paper sitting in front of me.

and no one loves you!
My page is half empty! And it will probably end up looking like crap anyway! And we're all going to die forgotten and unmourned as the universe winds down to its inevitable heat death!

Re: Best part/Worst part
The best part is drawing the comic.
The worst part is drawing the comic.
Nah, really though.
The best part is doing the roughs for the page. Working out the panels and composition with everything. Then penciling in all of the expressions and poses and environments.
Inking and coloring usually kill it for me. I find no joy in doing them most of the time.

Re: Best part/Worst part
Worst part: organizing the script. Specific part of writing process where I have to organize what goes where and how the story flows. I'm a sorta perfectionist when it comes to that and the reason I draw so little lately is because I'm not finishing any script.
Post-production is also very tiring, specially erasing pencils. Scanning and lettering are also rather boring but at least my hand doesn't ache afterwards.
Best part:The very beginning of drawing, the one where I decide what goes where on the page. I like penciling in general.

Re: Best part/Worst part
I think the worst part would be when theres like one lego that i can't find, and i spend hours looking for it... sometimes find it, sometimes dont
also... minifigure heads can be limiting... i cannot find a suitable face for this one female character... and i feel like ive been looking for ages
theres also the occasional realization that a character looks exactly the same as a character from another strip
i think the best is when i get all the photos and script together into one coherent piece and i can finally back up and see the entire thing
this is especially nice when the scene has a particularly detailed set

Re: Best part/Worst part
Good: When you finally fix the panel that you had to redo several times and it really really does look good.
Disheartening: When your buffer is far ahead of your website updates, so you look at the comics you already have up and cringe a little bit. Shoot, son. Can I fast forward to season two?
Also good: Just perfected the side profile for a character I want to introduce later.
Irritating: Said character won't appear for a million years.
Exciting: When you have a really epic dream and wake up and say "Holy cow! I need to work that into my story!"
Poop: When after you've been awake for a while and realize the dream doesn't make sequential sense, so it would be impossible to use anything of interest from it, except maybe the name "Otis" and maybe the family that slits people's throats for fun.

bad: being a month ahead of schedule at the beginning of the month, and then due to finals and papers, not adding anything new for that whole month

Re: Best part/Worst part
Good: Uploading the final product, and then doing a little narcissistic dance in front of the monitor when I see it on the page.
Also Good: Drawing fun little bits in the backgrounds of some pages. I love chances to play with expression, and random things that happen in the background, and which are ignored by characters in the foreground. There could be an important conversation going on between two main characters, and then some random idjit silently running amok in the background covered in flaming cats. This is hilarious to me.
Also also wik: scribblecomics.
Bad: Writing myself into a corner. I have gawd-knows how many pages that are full of doodles and scribbles... except for one blank square where my storyboards were supposed to go. It's irritating and it usually means that I have to rewrite the whole page or skip parts in order to keep moving forward. Otherwise I tend to... not update. Whenever there's a giant hiatus in the middle of a story, it's not necessarily that my life suddenly exploded. It's far more likely that I either didn't like where the story was, or wasn't sure what to do with what I had. If I love where the story is, chances are I'll draw it even if it means I don't sleep for a few days.

I love planning.
I hate implementation!
There's so many cool things I want to add, but I can be such a lazy bastard sometimes, and then I do update, and the server's fuxxored!

Re: Best part/Worst part
Worst part is sitting there staring at the paper and having no idea what to write about.
The best part is when I finally come up with something and I can get to work.
