A warning to all about Rick Olney

It's the anonymous feeling one gets from not looking someone in the eye, or something like that. For many, especially on forums like these, it's not an issue. For others, it's a huge temptation. And for the rest, it's an invitation to be a jerk.
Thankfully, the non-jerks are starting to band together to limit the power of the anonymous.

My dad is not letting me post here anymore because I'm being harassed again by the same person who was banned before for bothering me, Matt Martin. I know there is friends of his who read this thread so I hope you pass this message on to him.

I hope you are proud of yourself. Harassing someone off a board because they stood up to you and wouldn't let you harass them over and over and wouldn't let you call me names without speaking up for myself. You should be ashamed for treating me like you did and all the other girls who you have been sending harassing messages to.

I will still of course support Unscrewed. They are a great group of people and they do wonderful work. I hope in time threads like this aren't needed because they spread the word far and wide about con artists and scammers in the industry and no one gets ripped off again.

I think the important thing here is to bare in mind that even though many of us are not professional cartoonists, some of us do have aspirations of breaking into the industry. New folk make the best marks for con men. I could easily see some artist new to the industry getting his or her 'big break' when they're approached by this guy or someone like him, only to find out the hard way that there are sharks in the water. So I appreciate the warning.

This is their mission statement and it says it better than I could explain.

"Unscrewed! is a collection of individuals gathered together to educate creators on their rights, warn the industry about the harmful behavior of predatory individuals, and turn negative situations where creators have been wronged into positive experiences."

This group started because of the actions of the person warned about in this thread, Rick Olney. However they have grown far beyond him. They help people who have been wronged and through auctions and donations use those funds to file court cases and to help those who need money and have been ripped off. I urge you to donate money if you can. If you can't afford to but have a website please consider linking to the website. Right now the most high profile case is that of Rick Olney and his company Tight Lip Entertainment. If you go to the site you will see the scams he has done and the amount of money he owes people. He has had something like 4 cases already gone against him with more to come. If you read and love comics as much as I do I can almost be certain someone you love and respect in the industry has signed this warning letter about Olney.

This is my second statement.

I registered at comicgensis.com May 6, 2008 after reading for over a month. I liked reading the webcomics that were posted. I would love to make my own webcomic but I am not artistic at all so I look to get pointers. I was slowly making friends and talking to people. I was also whenever appropriate, warning people about Rick Olney and telling them about Unscrewed! and the great work they do.

July 31, 2008, Mattdocmartin made a post that was obviously an attempt to troll the Noses Optional fourum. He was previously asked not to post there by the people who post there. As well the moderator, administrator and Gail Simone asked everyone to leave anything related to Rick Olney off their fourum and use this thread you are currently reading. So they unfortunately took his trolling bait and attacked him, Unscrewed and Gail Simone. I hated to see that because I love Gail and the work Unscrewed does. So I made a post saying while he may support Unscrewed, he isn't speaking for them. He was damaging all the hard work I have put in explaining how great Unscrewed is. He then accused me of being Rick Olney in a post. When I explained I wasn't and if he wanted to talk to me, to use this thread, he instead started harassing me in PM. In a period of about 24 hours he sent me 8 PM messages. I asked him to stop, told him I would report him if he didn't and he continued. So I reported him and he was banned for harassement and trolling.

In the PM messages to me he accused me of being Rick Olney. Then he said I must be Crowley who I have since found out is a person he obviously doesn't like who posts at the You'll All Be Sorry fourum. I would like to say sorry to Crowley who I read is very upset their name was mentioned. I had no clue who you were when I was first accused of being you so I didnt realize putting your name would be your screen name. Then he accused me of being Nick Chumbly who I found out is a person who makes parody posts about Rick Olney. I told him to stop messaging me in private and he could talk to me in public in this thread. I told him that every time he messaged me and every time he ignored it and kept harassing me in private. He said he wasn't harassing me because I could mark him as a foe. Well this is my feeling on it. He was attempting to turn it around and make it my fault. I was to blame for not blocking him. If I would just block him I wouldnt get any messages. Well I wasn't going to be his victim. He started messaging me, asking for personal information from me. He was the one who should have stopped.

Now guess what? He is still saying I am a sock puppet. Not only that but people who have never said a single word to me are saying it too. They are saying I only joined here to attack him. Yes I joined in May, made friends here and waited for 3 months for him to post so I could attack him. That sure makes sense. I wrote a bye post last week because I came on and found 3 new PM messages attacking me and when my dad saw them he said I couldn't post here anymore because i was called a whore. His friends say he would never do that, he says he would never do that. Well he harassed me, harassed a bunch of other girls that is documented. He was banned for that harassment and trolling by STrRedWolf, also documented.

Then I read this today in a post Matt Martin made at You'll All Be Sorry

"As I said, the person making this shit up will come to a bad end once I get my hands on them"

Now you tell me, doesn't that sound like a violent threat to you?

Tonight I got an email saying I had a PM from a friend on the board saying STrRedWolf posted in my Bye thread. So I went and read it and here is part of what he said and a link to the whole thread.

"I'm also a bit disgusted that MattDocMartin has IM'ed me and demanded an apology over the harassment. His request was denied, and he was reminded that he was banned from these forums for a good reason. He's now banned from IM'ing me too, and must contact me through email."

So you tell me does that make Matt Martin sound like a person who would call me a whore or does he sound like a stand up guy? As I said in my very first post he has good intentions. Rick Olney certainly needs to be stopped but Matt Martin is a bully who harrasses and attacks those who he doesn't like. I asked him over and over to talk in this thread if he had anything to say but he wouldn't and only attacked me in private. I reminded him over and over that Gail Simone asked everyone to leave Noses Optional alone and not once did he reply about that. He still hasn't. Not once has he apologized to Gail for posting where he was asked not to. Not once has he apologized to Crowley or Nick Chumbly. And certainly I haven't got an apology for him saying I'll come to a bad end.

He was banned from this fourum and yet came back here. First claiming to check up on Rick [Who has been banned for a long time] then changed it to he accidently clicked the Noses Optional link. Then as I linked to, he demanded an apology from STrRedWolf offboard in an IM weeks after he was banned from a site he claims he doesn't even care about. By the way, is that condoned? Doesn't Matt Martin owe STrRedWolf an apology?

I love comics. I love the work Unscrewed does. I hate people who rip off people and crush the dreams of up and coming artists and writers like Rick Olney has done. I posted to help and look what it got me. Well I am not going to be a victim. I showed my dad what STrRedWolf said as well as what my friend in the making Kristy [Special K] said to me in a PM and he agrees that with them here and their help in making this a safe place, I can continue posting here.

I support Unscrewed! That is how I started this post and how I will end it. However you'll not see me post about them or this situation again. If Gail Simone wishes to PM me and talk, she is free to do so because I respect her and know she is fair and she is the only person who posted and said she didn't think I was a sock puppet. I sent her a PM before when this whole thing started at the beginning of August but I am unsure if she read it or not because she is a busy person I know and she must get a lot of PM messages. However I hope even she doesn't message me because I am sick of this and being treated like this. Anyone else who mentions Rick Olney or anything related to him and you get deleted on the spot.

I have to say, your level of dedication and maturity is astounding, considering what you've been through. I've taken a look at the "He said WHAT?" thread and the various threads in the Noses Optional forums, and it brings to question who Matt doc Martin really is. It seems like his trolling and threats to you would do more harm then good for Unscrewed.
Either way, you've shown fantastic patience in dealing with this jerk, and I think Unscrewed, Comic Genesis, and the internet in general will benefit from your presence. Thank you for providing those links and informing us all of the entire situation.
People, even though it's important to watch out for internet abusers and scammers, it's equally, if not more important to protect the innocent, whether they're the targets of scams or false accusations. I'm not sure where this would head, but I believe that Mr. Martin owes an apology to BigMack and to Comic Genesis for his actions. Just an opinion.

If so, what is the user name from which they were sent?

Matt has admitted to sending the first 8 PMs to you. The reason I came over here and got involved is because of the allegation that he created a new identity in order to harass you. Is that the case?

If Matt is in fact the person who sent these 3 messages, and if he in fact sent them from a new ID in order to avoid the ban, I will assist the admins here in any way I can in dealing with him. I'm not here to defend Matt. I'm here to get to the truth.

If somebody is impersonating Matt and sending fake messages in order to stir up trouble, that's identity theft and libel, and we will assist Matt in prosecuting the culprit.

So the first thing to establish is, what are the facts? Who sent you what and when?

Out of concern by myself and Jim (MacQuarrie), and in one of my very rare efforts that I care not to repeat, I double-checked your PM box. I won't give specifics here, and what was said in the PM's stays in the PM's. So far, only three people have PM'ed you. If there was a fourth who was harassing you, and you removed the sent messages, I could not tell.

(BTW, if it wasn't common already, Kisai and I have access to the bits that run the forums. Your messages can be read by ether of us; however, we don't randomly read folks PM's for no good reason. If there's a problem we need to go under to investigate, we will do so and let folks know that we have done it. I want to be open about that. Your PM's are none of my business unless it is forced to be my business. If you think even the ability to read other's PM's without going through the forum software is scary, feel free to remove your PM's as soon as you get them.)

It is the beginning of Orientation Week at University so I have only had the chance to get online in the last few hours. Your PM message was deleted because I already made it clear who I would accept PM messages from on this issue. I have sent PM messages to those people with all the information I have. You have nothing to do with this except as a friend of him. Therefore you have no right to any of this information.

I was simply going to copy and paste this part of my last post to you.

I take issue with how you are posting here. You state that you are here to get to the truth and not defend Matt Martin. Yet I looked over the You'll All Be Sorry fourum and you repeatedly state how you are positive he is innocent and call me a sockpuppet. Here are just a few things you have said.

You stated in a post on Friday that you do not condone harassment. In your last post you have said that Matt Martin admitted to sending me 8 PM messages. I haven't seen that but I'm glad to know he offered that truth. He was then banned for those PM messages. If you don't condone harassement, what if anything will you be saying to him about those PM messages he has admitted to sending? Should I be looking for an apology from him any place? As I have repeatedly said he harassed me and you have not made any comment I don't expect one now. You'll simply ignore this point as it doesn't help your cause. It just seems really interesting you are so adement about getting to the truth when you ignore all the public, documented harassing and threating things he has said to me.

After about 4 of the PM messages Matt Martin sent me, I told him I was not afraid of him but he was harassing and annoying me. However now I am scared of him and what he could do. He made a public post on the You'll All Be Sorry fourum that I previously pasted here saying

Do you condone threats of violence? You have never commented on his threat. Do you have no issue with what he said? Please correct me if I am wrong. I sent you a PM after your first post and after I was tired of repeatedly reading how I must be a sockpuppet and at least half a dozen people. In that PM I told you my real name, my age, location and thanked you for not posting to the Noses Optional fourum. I also sent you proof of the two people he accused me of being besides Rick Olney. So I was surprised to see when I signed in today you posted at the Noses Optional fourum. Please stop posting there as they have made it clear they do not wish to have this stuff in their area. I was foolish to give you my personal information since I'm now worried you will pass it on to Matt Martin or someone else I didn't give my name to. Therefore I don't wish to talk with you anymore and I hope you just leave me alone. I don't see how that is a wrong request. I am being attacked and treated unfairly. I am handling the situation in private with my family's support and trying to move on and enjoy myself. Matt is not my friend and I did not come here to defend him. We've disagreed and butted heads often.

I came here because Matt has participated in Unscrewed's efforts from the start, and accusations of him harassing people reflects badly on us. If those accusations are true, the admins here will surely want to ban his new identity, and Unscrewed will want to disassociate from him. If he did create a new identity here and harass you after his ban, he could very likely be banned at CBR as well. If the allegations are false, then we want to investigate who it is that's attempting to smear him, and by extension, us.

Matt has already been banned here because of his conduct. The prior messages have been dealt with. The only thing that concerns me or anyone else is Matt's alleged new account and the three new harassing messages. You made the charge, so the burden of proof is on you; if you do not provide some proof, we have to assume that it never happened. At that point we will begin legal proceedings for libel.

You needn't worry about the "personal information" you provided, as so far it does not check out.

Every single post you have ever made here has been about Matt. So, yes, that is exactly what you did; joined and waited for him to post so you could go after him. Your first-ever post was on Aug. 1. How were you "making friends" in the meantime without ever posting anything?

But since I joined in May of 2008, more than a year after him it was a little more than 2 weeks later as you say. So yeah, saying I joined just to attack him makes no sense to anyone not friends with him and having a bias.

Matt Martin does not have any affiliation with Unscrewedcomic.com and the hard and valuable work they do. He speaks here in this forum against the wishes of Gail Simone who has stated repeatedly she doesn't want to have any discussion causing inconvience or clutter. Matt Martin clearly has anger issues and as such at times acts like a bully online. His own friends have had to repeatedly tell him to step back and not to be on attack mode all the time. His intent may be good. In this case Rick Onley certainly deserves to have his unlawful acts shown so that others do not get cheated out of payment. However the way Mr. Martin goes about this causes a black eye to the greater cause and those who do not go around bothering people who have nothing to do with Mr. Olney's actions.

In closing as someone who enjoys the comic strips posted here, I do hope that no one else will attempt to cause problems here. It is understandable to a point. There is a lot of emotion with this issue as friends and loved ones have lost money and had threats and harassement to deal with. However that does not mean they should come here and involve people who in 99.5% of the case don't have anything at all to do with the matters at hand. I would suggest reporting any continued posts to the moderator as they have already removed early posts and I know they too don't wish to see this matter discussed here.

Oh and you can make friends sending PM messages and sending people email after you read their great webcomics. You don't have to post for everyone to see when you want to talk in private. Kinda like how Matt martin sent me those 8 PM messages in 24 hours he admitted to sending. I guess he doesnt like posting here in public either sometimes.

Now I'm deleting this place and never coming back. Thanks for ruining my fun. I guess there will be other places I can read web comics.

I don't have time to do this sort of research, but if BigMack is being intimidated off the forums, I think it's probably something you guys need to look into. Is she a fellow forumite? She has never posted a single thing that didn't have to do with Matt Martin. It's why she's here.

Why is she refusing to reveal the new account name that Matt is supposedly using to threaten her? Doesn't she want it to be banned? Or could it be that no such account actually exists? I just went through the member list from the time Matt got banned onward, and I haven't seen a single one that I thought might be him.
