Re: Why are we doing this?
I originally started my comic because I wanted a fantasy hero with glasses and brown hair, dammit (a combination usually reserved for mousy doomed love interests), and to kick certain tropes that I found annoying.
Now, five years later, I'm with Cope.
I swore a blood oath that this comic will be finished, damn it, and it WILL BE FINISHED!! *froth*
Now if only I could stick to my update schedule . . . *sighs*
And what am I gonna do when I finally get it finished? . . . Work on other comic projects, of course!

That about sums it up for me.
Plus, as a reader, I freakin' HATE it when a storyline comic just suddenly stops updating...so I kinda feel I owe it to my readers to actually finish my story now that I've started it.

Re: Why are we doing this?
I think I just do it because I don't have any hobbies that are currently more interesting to me.

Re: Why are we doing this?
I'm doing it because I don't want to stop doing it. Also, I enjoy it.

Re: Why are we doing this?
I'm doing it because I enjoy it. Part of me would love to do it full time, have more than one comic, sell merch, make a living out of it, but the sensible part of me knows that it'll remain as a hobby of mine. My main motivator is knowing that other people are reading stuff that I've written.
Re: Why are we doing this?
To be honest, I can't imagine not drawing comics. I've been working in the industry in some fashion since I was 16, and while I started doing comics, I ended up in the less exciting world of editing. Since my passion is comics, the idea of publishing on the web was a great way to keep doing what I love doing.
Re: Why are we doing this?
I do this partly as a creative outlet and partly to stay sane -- I delve into the comic to help put the bad things about work out of my head.

Re: Why are we doing this?
Too many good ideas. I think a lot, and I have brainstorms a lot, it would be a shame to let it all go to waste. Though if your talking about going crazy (BBLLEEAARRRGGG!!) then it would be best to take a break or something. People here talk about how wonderful stuff like schedules are and that's fine and dandy if you can easily make the comic your making (whether because your some kind of freak genius or because your comic is decidedly simple) but not everybody can keep a schedule and keep making the comic for themselves (and thus enjoy it).
Buuttt... I'm running off here... Ya! Too many good ideas! A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Re: Why are we doing this?
I've always wanted to do a comic strip.
Every once in a while I get a fleeting glimpse of how I could be the next Schulz, Watterson, Herriman, or Kelly if I could only get what's in my head down on paper. (sigh)
On a daily basis, I just do it for fun (I’m a much better artist in my head).

Mental trashcan.
Re: Why are we doing this?
well, I've started one [again] just recently and I am doing it to get rid of this idea I have. I am also doing it to improve my art in various ways, eg. my cel-shading , my perspectives, etc...
Also coz I don't have much to do in holidays, so it keeps me busy then as well. ^w^

Re: Why are we doing this?
I opened up the comic section of the paper one day and saw for the first time a strip called "Pearls Before Swine" and said "Hell, I can draw at least as good as that, all I need is a good idea."
I am enjoying this experience and I plan to continue for as long as I possibly can.

Re: Why are we doing this?
Haha, that's basically my exact reason. My newspaper has a small manga section with a storyline that doesn't interest me at all. So why not start your own?nutshellcomics wrote:I opened up the comic section of the paper one day and saw for the first time a strip called "Pearls Before Swine" and said "Hell, I can draw at least as good as that, all I need is a good idea."

I do it for the fun of it, so it's nothing serious. At the same time though, I promised myself that some day, no matter how long it takes, my comic will get finished. Even if I only update once a year, it will be finished, damnit.

Actually I checked out your last few pages and your stuff looks good. And it was funny.
And you haven't updated since last November.
I'm not chastising you, in fact you made me feel better. I put up a page just last month(LOL)!

Re: Why are we doing this?
Is it cruel to use the death of a loved one as an excuse for not updating? Anyhows, why do I do this? Well, it's something to do!
Re: Why are we doing this?
To get my feelings hurt from time to time
but also because It keeps my mind busy.
As It has been said, sometimes real life keeps me away from it but I always manage to begin updating again .

Re: Why are we doing this?
Honestly, I want money, fame and power. And more than anything, attention. Maybe something is wrong with me, but I crave attention as much as I crave good tasting food. And who doesn't want their webcomic to become the next big thing? Although even if I knew I wouldn't get money, fame or power, I would still do it as long as there is anyone who will read it. I've been making comics since 2nd grade, and I enjoy it. I'm sure as hell not going to stop now.
