Dial up vs High Speed

I'd start by at least scaling everything down to the point where you don't notice the texture scaling, or the jagged edges on objects that are supposed to be smooth. Today for example - the ship in the first panel, and the rusty thing behind her head in the second. Your panels are so big that instead of seeing more detail, i'm just seeing problems. Sorry if i sound harsh, but that sort of thing really sticks out to me.

My preferred method of getting online is "borrowing" other people's unsecured wireless connections. It's much easier than "borrowing" someone else's dial-up connection.

...unless you happen to have scissors, extra wires, and a good knowledge of electronics, I suppose.

Careful about that -- there was an item on /. a week or two ago about somebody being successfully prosecuted for "bandwidth theft" of exactly this variety. Apparently it's starting to be taken seriously.

Relating to the topic, this is something I've wondered about myself, but less in terms of percentages and more in terms of simply knowing what a real-world load time on my pages would be at 56 Kbps. I've basically gotten into the habit of designing for broadband 'cause... well... I have broadband.

It's theoretically possible to add up all the little graphics files and HTML and crap that goes into one of my pages and work up a number so I have an idea whether or not I'm killing dial-up people, but that's kind of time-consuming and doesn't include real-world factors like latency.

Is anyone aware of a service that'll basically measure load speeds using dialup access? It seems like somebody out there could offer a service like this to web designers for like $5 per month and do pretty well with it -- I'd certainly be willing to pay.

Dial up load time estimate -

Page is open if browser
File > Save as (or "Save page as")
Under the filename, choose "complete webpage"
Save it
Select all the files (HTML and folder full of images)
Right click > Properties

Size in Kilobytes = seconds to load on dialup, give or take a little.

Best part about Dial-up people is you can poke fun at them and it takes them two days to realize they've been poked fun of.

Last time I was forced to live with Dial-Up (at a camp), My drawing skills improved by about 3 fold because that's all I would do, rather than waste precious time waiting for pages to load.

I don't mind wasting time, but I want to waste time doing something entertaining, at least.
