Art is generally a combination of shapes to form images that trigger a certian responce in the brain. Shapes include straight lines and circles. You can not expect someone to draw perfect straight lines without help anymore than you can epect someone to draw perfect circles without help (Which, I think only one person in recorded history has ever done.)
I think this person is confused. They said that using a ruler is unnatural and cheating, yet they also said it would make the picture too realistic. You simply can not have a natural, unrealistc drawing anymore than you can have a unnatural realistic drawing. It doesn't even make sence.
Also, anyone that works in construction will tell you that blueprints and art are two different things. The point of blueprints are to give you accurate, mathmatical facts about a three dimentional structure so that you can create it. There is no stylization in drafting, like there is in art. Art is supposed to convey emotion, while blueprints are supposed to represent data. So even if using a ruler in art was 'cheating' what you were doing is not art, it is drafting.

You sharpen the rock? That's cheating.rosediamond wrote:The only "natural" art is taking a broken-off chunk of stone, sharpening it on another rock, and carving something into a tree . . . or another rock. Unless your teacher IS a caveman, s/he's just AN IDIOT.
. . . No offense to cavemen, of course.

Many famous artists were able to devote their entire life to art. It was their full time job and many spent their entire lives perfecting their craft. But what else did they have to do with their time? We have 100's of channels of television, blockbuster movies released on a weekly basis, music, video games and the internet. So we don't have time to develop our craft, so we use whatever tools we can to cut back on production time to free us up for things such as posting in this thread. So use the straightedge. I've been thinking about farming my work out overseas. It can be produced for a fraction of a cost of America.
Nothing wrong with using tools to aid and assist. And as others said in this thread there are no rules regarding art. That's what makes it art. It's all about your vision not somebody elses.[/i]

As a wise high school teacher told me once, use the technology that is available to you. Anything that helps you and is legal is OK. Using a ruler, photocopying, cut and paste (as much as people hate it), if it works for you and helps you achieve the desired effect, then you should by any means use it. There is no "cheating" in art. There is only the result.
Being original is copying what no one has copied before

Seriously.
In a lot of my work I WANT a perfectly straight line, for a non-drafting-related reason.
I can draw straight lines without a ruler. We have a class dedicating a whole semestre to straight lines and perspective without aid. But, as our teacher says, that's jsut in case your tools aren't available.

Re: Use of a straight edge is cheating?
I say fuck the art student. Tell him when he learns to draw using only his hands and the blood he syphons from himself he can cast the first stone.OBS wrote:I was informed about 2 days ago by an art student that any use of a straight edge to create a straight line is "cheating" and therefore invalidates a work because it isn't "natural".
I make rather liberal use of a straight edge on a regular basis and find it as an indispensable tool for perspecive and detailing, and in many cases, could not properly produce a strip without it.
Of course, relying on a straight edge so much has made me dependant on it's abilities. What makes it "unnatural" is that I don't learn how to not to use it. I could get by without it, but the clarity and quality of any straight lines I produce free-hand would suffer and look awful.
So, is using a straight edge in a strip production cheating? Is it cheating for non-comic related work, or is its use solely limited to technical applications?
