Second Life : the place for virtual tip jars?
I don't know if anyone else has thought of this but I've been fiddling around with an idea.
When I heard that one of my favorite web comics was having problems generating funds to keep thier service, I ran through a quick list of things I found that people make money with on the internet and one of the coolest things was Second Life. An Open source MMO game that deals with real currency (1 US dollar = Apprx. 270 lindins). Since everything is player created and coded, maby it could be used as a virtual "tip jar".
Good Idea? Bad Idea? Too Idealistic? Most likely, but I'll keep going.
Okay, Small scale:
If a person can get some land and set up a building or hangout for Genners, One could leave a tip jar or sell virtual mechandise to fans of your comic who play as well for a few more pennies a month. No big deal. Who knows, you might accedentally have some fun.
Medium scale:
Okay, you could get really involved and make your own shop (probably best to keep near other Genners) and have room to sell more virtual mechandise or create a hangout to chat with friends or fans. make a few bucks. Oh! Note: most Vendors are automated, you don't have to BE there to sell.
large scale:
If the first two survive, then you are building a community. The more Genners that come in, the more fans will get interested. It would be like a virtual comic convention. With less frequent flyer miles. And a lot more time to attend.
huh...maby that last idea would be good on it's own...
I'm not saying that it's going to be easy, not at all. It takes time and work to create objects in game. but who's to say we couldn't help eachother out? Create a group in-game keep connected.
or not... just thinking.

That would be a really neat idea if anyone could be found to stick it out and work on it till it was finished.
Out of all the many many CG-related projects and games and etc, only one has ever been finished, and that was Vort's (awesome) fighting game.
Hell, even I started trying to put together a MUD, but that fell apart pretty quick when I got into school again. >_<
But yea
If you can find a way to put stuff together and get it working you may get some people into it.

This webcomic, seen here is hosted on the free web host Comic Genesis which pretty much proves its not popular.

I'm in Second Life as Drake Bacon (and sometimes Drake Winger), and have one project underway: The creation of the brewpub, Shotgun Shells, in Second Life. It is slated to open this Friday at 6pm PST (also known as SLT).
Have a beer or two. Dance the night away. Or loose it all on the No-Limit Holdem table.
It's in Furnation Vista. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Furnation%2 ... 64/216/25/ will get you there (and download the client).

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
*cough*
Anyway... creating a sim world in Second Life requires money and a lot of hard work, especially if you want to create the world from scratch by hand. The best I could do with the builders tools was make myself some crappy sideburns. If anyone wants to run with this project I'd be all for it, but in Second Life I can't be of much use to build things.

Okay, I checked out your bar, Wolf. I like the decore, can't wait to add it to my currently short list of hangouts. Would you mind if I asked for some tips on developing land now and then?
BTW, I'm Argus Harford in SL.
I'm glad this idea perked a few ears. I've begun learing how to script. This will take some time. But, in practice I found a kinda neat way to use the creation system. In about an hour I created a scalable model of a building that I've been having trouble keeping a constant look for in my comic.
Basically I'm using Second life as a sort of poor man's 3D Studio
this could really come in handy.
