Hey, anyone know what Darkgate Comic Slurper is? Are they hotlinking or what? here's the link, use it wisely. I need to know if what they're doing is kosher or not. I'm a little uneasy about it being off-site.

This site's come up before, on Keenspot's board as well as this one I think. They're not hotlinking, they host the image on their server and provide a link back to the site. At the same time, however, they take adviews because people can just view the comics there instead of at the real site.
There's not much that can be done unless that site's banned from slurping the images off your site or maybe ask them to take yours off.

If they're doing it without your permission, then they're technically pirating your work. Just because they have a link leading back to you doesn't make it kosher. They're still violating aspects of the DMCA (leads to a pdf) regarding circumvention measures, and they're still making a public display of your work. Public display without your permission is a clear infringement. If you don't mind, then I suggest you write the offender and give them official permission, and then stress that they should have ASKED FIRST.Mercury Hat wrote:http://darkgate.net/comic/

sorry, my wife was hurrying me and I guess I forgot to paste it in...
EDIT: Toy Division, The Noob, and Ghastlys Ghastly Comic are a couple of comics I recognize from the forums here. Granted, I was scanning pretty fast, so I probably missed a couple (or 50, who knows). Also saw The Tao of Geek, but I don't know what, exactly, Jim's connection with that is. Just a heads up to anyone who may be concerned.

How can they have "This Comic Sucks" and not me? I feel so deprived!

As long as they link back, this doesn't bother me. Their webspider SHOULD only access Keenspace once for each comic. Then it's their bandwidth that gets sucked. I'm fine with that. It's the programs that sit on the reader's hard drive and download your comics that bother me. If you get a hundred or a thousand of those, that's a lot of hits that don't show ads.
Nah... I feel a lot more "indie" being obscure.Noise Monkey wrote:I can nominate you, if you'd like. Of course, this'll be in the same email where I tell them to piss off, so they may not take my suggestion for much.
(technically, though, I haven't decided what to do yet....conversing with Cricket...)

Honestly, I'm still not sure what to think of that Darkgate site. On the one hand, I'm happy that more people can read the comic. On the other, I'm worried that things like this start really cutting into ad revenue, which is what keeps CG free.
Not that they're getting all that many pageviews from Dim Bulb, mind. But it's the principle. I mean, right now, it's just a few of us, but if a bunch of programs start doing this, we start losing some pretty hefty pageview/ad revenue thingies.
I dunno, I don't know that I'm enough of a rules stickler to really care all that much. As I said before, I'm really rather happy that people are just reading the damn comics. We'll see if that attitude persists.

I had not considered that aspect, I want CG to keep making money, not just so that it can stay free for me, but because I do enjoy my internet home and I would hate for all of us to be left homeless. Think how many would have to move into DM's box...Chaos Cricket wrote:Honestly, I'm still not sure what to think of that Darkgate site. On the one hand, I'm happy that more people can read the comic. I'd be flattered if I was considered a good enough artist to have my comic slurped.
At least, I'd be flattered until the "I'm a good artist, bish!" sentiment set in, at which point I'd probably object.
But it's questionable if I'll ever reach that point. I hang out on... (tally marks) <strike>||||</strike> | Six forums instead of drawing. I should be drawing now. Heaven help me if I ever learn japanese and delve into the xchans...
