I don't know why, but for some reason I just started thinking of possible endings to the current storyline that would be rather unpleasant for the unfortunate protagonists. Hm. Maybe I've been in a sadistic mood or something; I don't know. Anyway, I don't really expect any of these to be the ending you have planned, since they mess with the characters too much (I'm pretty sure you'll have Mark end up back to normal eventually), but I thought just for fun I'd share some of the alternate endings to the storyline I'd thought of, and perhaps give you a peek into my twisted psyche.
1) Louis's machine functions exactly as it was originally supposed to - that is, it sends the subjects to Kyle's homeworld. Of course, that leaves Mark and Cleo stranded in that world with no way back.
2) Or maybe it functions only partly as it was supposed to... somehow, only half of them end up in Kyle's homeworld, and the other halves stay in their own. Maybe the top halves are transported and the bottom halves stay behind, for example, or the left halves are transported and the right halves stay behind. Or maybe, to make things interesting, complementary halves exist in each world... so they can join in each world into one half-and-half individual...
3) Louis's machine transforms Mark and Cleo back to creatures of their own world. However, instead of humans, it transforms them into non-anthropomorphic foxes. Or maybe just one, and the other one does end up human. The back-to-human Cleo could end up keeping the vulpine Mark as a pet...
4) The machine does transform both Mark and Cleo back to humans. Unfortunately, now Mark is female and Cleo is male.
5) The machine somehow accidentally merges Mark and Clio into one person (or vixen, as the case may be).
6) We've already seen (in the July 16 strip) that the machine has one possible odd side effect... for some reason, it made Mark's clothes disappear. Maybe if Louis tries the machine on Mark again, the effect is permanent - whenever Mark tries to put on any clothes, they immediately vanish, so he (she?) is stuck permanently naked. Or, to be a trifle less cruel, maybe it doesn't happen instantly, but his/her clothes just disappear after some random period of time.
7) Or, of course, two or more of the above could be combined.
As I said, I know obviously none of these is the ending you're actually going to use; I just thought I'd tell some of these alternate endings I came up with because... well, for no reason, really. In fact, this post serves no purpose whatsoever. I guess I was just bored or something. Sorry. I'll shut up now.
Good comic, by the way.

------------------
