Stupidest Drug Ad (you vote)

Post by Vedius Pollio »

This deserves a separate category:

(It creeps me out how many of these drug ads are targeted towards children. Why does the audience of SeeWee Herman's show need to know what crack is?)

The Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters are the most ridiculous ones imo, I voted Ninja Turtles for the sheer idiocy of the dealer for taking joints into school and talking about them so publicly (though, right in the middle of the street in the Ghostbusters is pretty damn stupid too). But also the kids cheering and the Turtles suggestions also give point.

The Snake the Dealer video was actually pretty cool.
The gospel preacher, the hostile teacher/The face of God with an impostor's features
This is the prophecy - the cult leader/The people's temple, the holy ground, the war compound
Four-pound to rifles, disciples, the holy idles/Supreme truth, the cult leader with the green tooth
The multi-millionaire with a stare that can freeze troops/I program people to kill
The motiviational speaker, my words cause people to feel/It's mind control, let the cult leader guide your soul
Open up your eyes to the lies he told/The general, the chief, I be the political pioneer
The cult leader, you can believe in me, I am here/Bless the children, take you under my wing, shelter
Helter Skelter, this is it, you can't kill me I'll exist forever. Cult Leader!

I have to vote for the Ninja Turtles for both being unbelievably inane, and for assuming drugs are a pressing problem in elementary school hallways. The Ghostbusters one is a close second for having the kid who says no look higher than anyone I've ever seen.
... and exactly how important is "the ability to scream in three languages" for this job?

Danger! Crack dealers are necrophiliacs! [EDIT: lisping, bisexual, necrophiliacs who speak in an enchanting, Tennessee-Williams-style, Southern drawl. This is an insult to the manliness of crack dealers everywhere!!!]

This cartoon ad by Hanna Barbera is actually quite artistic:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJTC_sX5cxs

And this ad, which is the Memento of Drug PSAs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xYakglSox0

As long as you don't care much about non-melodramatic reality, many drug PSAs are excellent pieces of cinematic art.

I once heard a very funny lesbian comedian do a joke where she said something to the effect of; she would do drugs just to get the Pots and Pans girl to come and smack her around the same way she trashed that kitchen.

I think the newer ones are much worse than any of the ones on the list, but that could just be nostalgia talking.

What I remember the most wasn't the PSAs but when they'd do a full length anti-drug episode of some cartoon. The one I remember in particular was apparently called "C.O.P.S.". Now you wouldn't think a show about police would have to work to hard to introduce an anti-drug plot. But to make a point that drugs are double-plus-ungood they had the usual villains (the local crime lord and his gang) team up with the police to fight drugs.

P.S. If anyone cares to watch a whole bunch of old sensational PSAs, check out the Prelinger Archive (Drugs).

Smack you around?

I used to love that show, and i remember the episode you are talking about. actually that is one of the few episodes i do remember, other than one that has something to do with an ice burg IIRC.

the 80s were just a strange time i think, when it came to stuff like that. I mean the 50s, 60s and 70s had been full of drugs and their was tons of information and misinformation flying around about them, but something happened in the 80s that just turned the whole thing up to 11 it seems. We had the "War on Drugs" PSAs at the end of every cartoon, every single cop movie seemed to revolve around them; Beverly Hills Cop, K-9, RoboCop 2, Predator 2, Tango and Cash, Crocodile Dundee had a bit, and that just off the top of my head. Really, if you watch a movie from the 80s, you can pretty much bet that there will be drugs and hookers. I am surprised that Shredder's big plan for the TMNT movie wasn't some kind of ninja crack.

I do think the worst think i have ever seen is some cable show about a guy who helps drug users by kidnapping them or something. There has been an add for it before every movie that i have gone to see in the theater this year. I guess i am in the minority here because i actually do think that drugs are bad, but something about this show and the adds for it just make me cringe. I can't seem to find any information about this show and i can't remember the title. But i hope it has been canceled.

I just went and bought the Massive Attack album where the song from the "Memento" ad came from. (Hearing the House theme music on the same album is a bonus.)

Massive Attack fucking own!!!

Bad PSA against drugs... Anyone remember when GI Joe and Cobra teamed up to fight The Headman?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAKLwU7PM-k&fmt=18

Came complete with Drug Dealer toys. That's right, TOYS. Of the Drugdealers. To beat up in your very own home.... there was something disturbing about that whole concept.

And then there was the Infamous Saved by the Bell ep...

I find it disturbing how many times "drugs" and "kids" are mentioned in the same sentence. That's a pretty vulgar demonisation. Like claiming that Jews kill goy babies to make matzo for passover. I hope that future generations will look at the US establishment's propaganda with the same bewilderment as present generations look at Anti-Semitic propaganda from Nazi Germany. The principle is essentially the same, though nobody has built concentration camps for drug users yet. (But Red State Americans are stupid enough to do it, mark my words.)

The Headman looks like a cross between Looten Plunder and Cypher from the Matrix.

Why hasn't anyone voted for Pee Wee Herman? A drug awareness ad hosted by a felon is way crazier than anything the Ninja Busters could come up with.

I believe the show you're refering to is The Cleaner . I've only seen a few episodes, it wasn't too bad. Friends who watch regularly say he isn't some super hero who magically cures everyone, sometimes he fails to get the drug user clean, sometimes he even makes things worse. I'd have to watch the show some more before making any judgements.

Holy fuck. It's Sharon from Battlestar!

(Why is it that so many good actresses... ...do so many bad anti-drug advertisements?

Maybe the Ad Council scumbags have some kind of hold on these women:

Of the options given, I chose Ninja Turtles.

The silliest one I ever saw was the one where they showed pot smokers behind unable to drive safely and then made the comment "Marijuana, its more dangerous than we all thought." So.. I guess the point of this is that marijuana is about as dangerous as alcohol.

yup, that would be the one. I haven't seen the show either and my low opinion of it comes entirely from the ads before movies, right along with ads for Saving Grace.

I have seen a lot of drugs on TV and i have been around a lot of junkies. I think that part of the problem with anti drug adds or shows like this is that they have to try and romanticize the drugs to make them seem like something spooky otherwise there is just no reason for all the ads about them. While the drug users i have been around are nowhere near interesting enough to warrant even a walk on role in a TV show, much less an entire episode devoted to someone trying to help them. In the end they are just not worth it.

I did see a couple of anti meth adds a while back that seemed to almost get it right. They pretty much summed up what meth does to people in a realistic unglamorous way. But i guess that particular drug doesn't need much help to make it look bad.

I must admit, my first thought on reading the title of Snake the dealer was Solid snake from metal gear.

when I'm not stoned I drive well above the limit
when I'm stoned, I drive on or just below it and checking my speed and mirrors twice as often(never mind the fact that its usually late when I'm baked and don't want to wake anyone up with a big buick lesaber)
