in his name...wait what?

Post by Halo299 »

long story here guys.

a long time ago (back in the summer) when i first started working on Outside the Sphere, i posted links to it on the Comic Pitching board of Comic Geneisis.

most of what i heard was good, but then this one guy (i thought it was a girl for the longest time) posted about how my comic was so full of violence and saddness and how it wasn't very godly.

i was shocked. i can be a VERY crude person when i want to be. but i respected the subject matter of my comic (mostly aikido) and i didn't want to be...well you know.

well i followed this guy around on the message boards for a while and he was doing that kind of stuff to everyone. telling them about how they needed to live more for Jesus and stuff like that.

well, turns out this guy did his own comic. So i checked it out. not that great but what i expected.

but about 10 or so strips into the comic...things start to ...change.

i'll let the comic speak for itself and not give away then ending, but for more information you can also check out the "old news' section of his site.

oh my...
It is a horrible thing when some one looses their faith, in what ever it my be, and can't come to terms with it.
I hope he was able to find his peace.

I doubt very much that this guy ever had a crisis of faith. I suspect he made the first part of the comic corny on purpose, and trolled on various forums just to drum up interest.
Squidflakes, God-Emperor of the Tentacles.
He demands obeisance in the form of oral sex, or he'll put you at the mercy of his tentacles. Even after performing obeisance, you might be on the receiving ends of tentacles anyway. In this case, pray to Sodomiticus to intercede on your behalf.

i also have thought about that.

i have googled his name and tried to find some news about his suiccide but nothing (not a big surprise) but if i could prove that that was real then it would lend more crediblity to the rest of the story.

also.

while looking at the character profile page i noticed that the two characters that flip out are the only two characters that wear sunglasses.

not a big deal but it does create the idea that the author saw some kind of connection between these characters that makes thier actions at the end seem premeditated.

next step is too try to find some information about the church or any of the other people he mentioned.

and yes...this is what i do in my spare time

Heh.. well don't worry too much about it, I did the exact same thing.

That's the most fucked up thing I've ever read. :o
It seems from his old news segments that after his mom died, he fell apart, and the church accused him of molesting a girl from the church. The picture of his obituary says that drugs and drinking had a lot to do with it, too.

...Goddamn, that's site is depressing.

Edit: From the news part of the site, first post:
"So I started drawing Doobl!

Doobl will update five times a week starting Monday. That's my plan. I have a lot of strips already drawn, 32 to be exact and I think you will find that you can be funny and still run a Christian comic with a righteous core!"
He drew all the comics before starting.

The fact that all of the comics are done on a weekly basis with no real interuption makes me think it was all set up.

This was so exagerated as to be ridiculous...the article is bogus and there's no way he would post on the comic [the minister], a minister would delete the whole fup-ucked thing!

He's probably laughing that you considered it to be a real event.

Try not to think of it so much as losing faith, but gaining . . . a different faith.

The news article at the end is fake enough to make me realise it had to have been fake. But I did enjoy the comic, the art was well done.

the comic failed to make me laugh, which is sad because it had a lot of potential to do so.

Fun story. I'm suprised comicgenesis will host it though.
Even an ignorant, paranoid, cowardly, ugly, corrupt, unsociable, aristocratic thug can conquer large parts of the world, kill thousands of people and be celebrated as the saviour of the Republic.

That comic thing was... bizarre to say the least. o_O

I do doubt that the story about him killing himself is true, but either way, the person who drew that comic is/was in need of serious help...

Edit: According to http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi , nobody around the age of 30 with the last name of Hanley died this year.

Still kind of a weird desire to fake one's own death...

Ach, the newspaper doesn't exist. The only thing even close to the "Dallas Times" is the "Dallas Times Herald" and that stopped printing in 1991. The reporter doesn't exist. Jess Hanley was never registered on anything anywhere on the Farmers Branch Church website.... In fact the only real thing I could find was the Farmers Branch Church.... Yep, Halo and Squidflakes, I too like to waste my time voraciously fact checking :)

Also, did anybody else notice that all the characters were basically animals, except for the Jewish character which was some wierd looking purple pac-man-ghost-type alien thing?

He had some vaguely nice art going on there for awhile - but my mind keeps wondering "why?!" I mean a clever hoax and well crafted story is one thing, but just a random bible burning homophobic gore-fest is another. It's not the most intelligent thing that's ever graced my eyeballs, but heigh ho :D
I shall keep myself in oysters for the rest of the week, thank you very much.

Somehow reminds me of Elfer.

Yeah, it's obviously trolling.
The gospel preacher, the hostile teacher/The face of God with an impostor's features
This is the prophecy - the cult leader/The people's temple, the holy ground, the war compound
Four-pound to rifles, disciples, the holy idles/Supreme truth, the cult leader with the green tooth
The multi-millionaire with a stare that can freeze troops/I program people to kill
The motiviational speaker, my words cause people to feel/It's mind control, let the cult leader guide your soul
Open up your eyes to the lies he told/The general, the chief, I be the political pioneer
The cult leader, you can believe in me, I am here/Bless the children, take you under my wing, shelter
Helter Skelter, this is it, you can't kill me I'll exist forever. Cult Leader!

Well, think of it maybe as meta-art.

The guy created a fake world where there was this cartoonist, who created the cartoon, then offed himself.

It makes a statement. You may or may not agree with his premise (Bible Study will not only kill your faith, but turn you into a homocidal maniac) - and you may recognize that it's not an original idea (can't think of an example of prior art tho) - but the fake persona bit was refreshing.

Like an ice-cube in a glass of spoiled milk.

Meh, as someone who has studied the bible and knows some of the crappy elements in it but still maintains my faith, that message didn't really affect a huge change in me. ^_~

Still, I feel sorry for the characters. As I've said before, with my feelings about fictional characters, this was a crappy way to go.
