Am I the only one that notices in old art the women do look like that?

Because women occasionally really look like that. Look at the Venus Figures (which this cartoon is based on) and the art of Rubens, etc.
I'd bang a chick built like the Venus of Willendorf in a heartbeat, and I'd continue to bang her until one of us passed out from exhaustion. Large breasts, fatty deposits on hips...oh yeah, she's Evolutionarily Sexy.

i think it's largely a cultural thing. ideals of beauty always change over time though. Every culture though has a fertility goddess, and their depictions ironically are created by what people in that time found "timeless".

The Venus of Willendorf (circa 10,000 BC)

Aphrodite (circa 100 BC)

Sleeping Venus(Aphrodite) (circa 1501)

Aphrodite (circa 1525 AD)

Venus Victrix (1808 AD)

Beyonce (arguably the Aphrodite of our time)
A similar experiment can be done on a much smaller timescale using goldfish and various sized fishbowls. Big empty fishbowl with just a few fish.. they grow large and multipy frequently, lots of fish crammed in a small fishbowl.. they grow very small and place an emphasis on survival over fertility.
Personally i find the 1525 version of Aphrodite the most attractive. She's full and soft, her hips are wide, her breasts are a bit smallish for her body size, her forearms and thighs would be considered "chubby" by today's standards, but above all she is natural (compare to Beyonce), and natural is hawt!

For Mr. Caveman, that was the ideal of his time.
Many primitive sculptures unearthed from the dawn of man have been of a woman with an ample, motherly figure; large breasts, ample belly, wide hips, thick thighs; a woman in the prime of life after bearing several children. It's thought that this was the deity of the time; woman was worshipped as the life-giver that she was, and the Mother was the creator of the earth and all its creatures.
As for our current ideals, I'd say they're starting to swing back in the proper direction; extremely thin woman are no longer as popular as they were. Now men like to, for instance, look at the bootie girls, as I like to call them, with great tits, wide hips, and rounded asses; white or black, these are the women you see in all the hip-hop videos. They're still somewhat slender in the waist, but an hourglass figure, I think, is probably the most flattering figure there is.

Well, speaking as an art-school dropout, who has taken way more art history than I'll ever use in "real life" -
When you look at the sculpture from the so-called "Classical" period (ie. Greek), check out the male figures versus female figures. (too lazy to link) - the males are all young, and frankly, totally hot, usually fully nude, as in twigs-n-berries. The females, in sharp contrast, by our standards, are often, well, kind of average, rather masculine in nature, almost always partially clothed. Only in the first century BC do you start to see examples that were fully nude (Aphrodite of Cnidus). There were a few outstanding examples where the females were as beautiful; venus di milo, etc. But the point is - they're not as wantonly sexy as the boy sculptures, with their tight buttocks, well-defined musculature, and dynamic poses - by and large, the big thing you take away from a study of Hellenic art in general, and Classical sculpture in particular, is that sexuality, and sexiness, was an entirely male phenomenon. Women were for childbearing, men (boys) were for the hot action. This was particularly true (and there's significant written history to back this up) in the Sparta region.
Of course, Greek thought being the supposed basis for all "Western Civilization" it's somewhat controversial to embrace how gay they were.
(I wish I hadn't sold my last set of art history texts back - they were really expensive books, and I needed the cash - I'd be able to cite some other works by name as examples. . . )
Now - as far as paleolithic fertility cults go, yes, the Venus of Willendorf is a good example of a cult item that has been found pretty much all over Europe and Asia from North Africa to Catal Hayuk in modern-day Turkey. Whether this was the female sexual ideal; we don't really know this. But it was definitely a very popular and widespread cult-idol. Examples from Catal Hayuk include the fat-belly of pregancy, life, creation, on the front, and on the back they bore parallel lines inscribed, as if to expose bare ribs - therefore the religious cult symbol embodied both life and death. So it's possible that the figures are more symbolic than representational (ie - they may not have represented an actual ideal figure that the hottest women were supposed to look like).
I don't have much to say about Rubens' work, other than, supposedly, that body type was really only "in fashion" for a couple of decades.
Man, check out the southeast asian (cambodia, india, etc) female nude sculpture that appears in architectural ornament; Very curvy, voluptuous, HUGE tits. Big titties and skinny waist aren't unique to the NASCAR crowd in the US. . .
Personally, there are moods where I've found all types appealing. I suspect, as a man, I'm not alone.

there were two different periods that the Greeks went though, Hellenistic where the female form was venerated, and pre-Hellenistic, where the male form was venerated. Well, I'm sure they had more periods than that, but as for art and sculpture, those were the main ones.

Traditional cell animation makes me happy
As for me, I've got hips and tits and I love them, hooray for Mighty Aphrodite!
By the by, Cambodian carved temple dancers are some of the most beautiful feminine and subtley erotic representations of the female form I've ever seen. In my mind they rival Indian temple carvings because of their subtlety - in India you can see the stone lady going at it hammer and tongs with her stone companion etc. but in the Cambodian carvings I have seen the sexuality is implied through the most sensual of curves and lines. Those rocks ooze sexy

I once saw a manga that took place in prehistoric times, jokingly offering the "first" examples of hentai stuff, i.e. "first sex just for pleasure", "first voyeurs", "first lesbians", and of course, "the birth of the oldest profession." :3
A catboy is fine too. And I dancedancedance and I dancedancedance!

Well, you might consider that all "warrior-tribe civilisations" have strong male homosexual traditions...Look at the German tribes that fought and in the end defeated the Roman Empire, look at the japanese Samurai society.
Typical examples of how the "warriors" was in a way isolated from family life and the practice of male to male sex was considered normal.
One can say that homosexuality becomes normal in the absence of the other sex I guess, it´s no coincidence that the military and navy traditions are ripe with bonding rituals that you might only find in leather bars as a civilian.
