Well, lessee...
I hate bad drivers. And having lived in El Paso and being sent briefly overseas to Bahrain, (what I consider to be the two worst places to drive in the entire fucking world), I was inundated in them for quite some time. Could not possibly count the number of times I saw horrific accidents or cursed at some asshole who either decided to drive nearly fifty miles over the speed limit while weaving in and out of lanes or straddling two lanes, or who decided that he/she was going to drive in the fast lane going ten miles UNDER the speed limit. While I was overseas, some douche of a Bahraini guy hit one of our vehicles traveling to the site we had set up (I was part of a PATRIOT unit at the time); thank God no one was hurt, but the idiot was driving well over the speed limit, and straddling two lanes on a two lane road.
Yes, a two lane road. As in, one lane goes one way, and the other lane goes the other way.
I also hate the fucking ASSHOLES who for some fucking stupid reason seem to think that I want to listen to their hardcore rap at a volume almost guaranteed to blow out other people's eardrums while passing me in traffic. Or parking near me. Or staying near me in traffic for some odd reason. Or passing me on the sidewalk. NOT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD LISTENS TO YOUR RAP SHIT, OKAY? I recognize that you have a bitchin' stereo system, but save it for the fucking tailgate parties, okay?
If I think of more, I'll add them.

See... right there. Welcome to the line between a perfectly reasonable personal choice and a radical "I'm better than you because someone told me so" cult-like. pseudo-drug.
whoops... I think we just crossed it.
Can you not see the extremeism and hipocrisy...? Can't you even
smell it? Don;t you hear the cartoon character voice in your head every time you say the "word"?
I've seen 'straightedge' propaganda that, for instance, when carried to it's logical extension, makes a straight-faced comparison between having a glass of wine with dinner and smoking crack or shooting heroin into your veins.
For one thing, making a comparison between social drinking and, say, smoking crack is like comparing eating a cheeseburger with being a cannibalistic pedophile who only rapes, kills, and eats babies three years old or younger... Because he just can't get off without hearing the pelvic bone *snap!*.
Besides which, this whole "movement" bullshit they wrap it in is, as I mentioned above, just dripping in cult-like me-too-ism. Fuck, man... I don't do drugs, either. It's stupid. But simply being smart enough to not do drugs is no reason to transform ourselves into sheeple...
o.o
oh, shit.
Realizations don't usually hit that hard.

The straightedge movement is an excellent example of an idea that was perfectly fine starting out, and very much needed in the time and place it first appeared, but has grown in to something ugly. Now...I suppose the casual members might not be so bad, but the harcore ones? Those fuckers are scary. I once passed a fairly slow evening at a free show watching ones of these guys being sytematicly shunned by all his friends and associates, because of a rumor that someone knew a guy who's brother said they saw him sipping a beer a few weeks ago.

How about volatility...? If someone goes out and gets plowed, then comes over to your house the next day... So you can still smell the "booze" on them, but it's more the smell of the combined ingredients... Is there still enough volatility to the "alcohol" coming from their pores to bother you?
As a good example for the volity question, when I'm doing one of my alchol based marinates or sauces, Kite needs to be in a different room of hte house unitll it's cooked.. but one it is cooked its fine.

I listen to my car stereo at full volume... thankfully none of my music is rap and I don't have "added bass" in my car.

I just happen to be mostly deaf and it's the only way I can fear the feckin music.

A couple friends of mine ended up in the hospital a couple years back because they were smoking downtown and a gang of straight edgers beat the shit out of them.

what the hell? Jus because I, personally, just don't like the taste of alcohol or the smell of tobacco, I'm suddenly some giant nazi who wants to dictate other peoples lives?
Hell no. It's just my choise, and my way of living. I don't push it on people, i hardly even mention it. Pretty much, I only talk about it is when the topic arises of my alcohol consumtional habits.
I didn't play the stereotype game about users, you all did. Not everyone is like the ones you met. For me, SE is about keeping your mind clear, and being able to focus.

Although I hate going against Honor, she's scary when mad, I'd have to say that you're being a bit prejudiced against WangyJohn
(Your name makes me want to do unspeakable things to you... oh what the hell ::ass rapes with large knobby strap-on::)
Anyways, yes there are some seriously psycho straightedgers out there. Such as the ones that beat people up. ::insert head explody sound here:: But he's just stating a fact about what he prefers. I didn't hear him say that he would boy-cot a party due to alcohol. And if he does then is it because of the booze, which would be stupid, or because he thinks that he might have to put up with dumb-ass drunken people? Or worse yet get puked on and listen to their angsty whining? Or all the ribbing he would get about not drinking? I've heard people try to get others drunk especially when they're drunk themselves and it can be very annoying to have to keep on saying that no you wouldn't like a drink, you don't feel like drinking tonight and could they please just shut the hell up?
I wouldn't like to do LSD I'm afraid of what it could do to my brainmeats. That doesn't mean that I'm going to go out and assume that everyone that does LSD is a bad person. That would be stupid but neither should I get gruff for not taking LSD.
I think that straightedger has become a negative thing and that maybe he should have just said that he prefers not to drink.

I can respect the second half of the sentence, but the first five words really discolor it.
This is a bit like saying "For me, the KKK is about getting to wear pointy hats."
Well, news flash... For everyone else, it's about a delusion of racial superiority and purity, and fostering condescending hatred of others.
You didn't start off saying "I don't like the taste of alcohol or the smell of tobacco" or "I just like to keep my mind clear and able to focus." You started off proudly proclaiming yourself "straightedge" and telling the heartwarming tale of wearing your gang sign at a concert.
If you're smart enough not to cripple your mind with drugs, simply say "No thanks. I don't partake." But if you insist instead on standing next to the Klan, and dressing like Klan, don't be surprised when someone assumes you're Klan... (even if you say "oh, but
I'm not extremist or smug about it." Yeah...? Well, the people you're
choosing to associate with
are.)
People who don't like getting painted with a broad brush shouldn't stand so close together.

You know what I hate? Recycling ordinances.
They keep getting passed more and more around here and seeing as I have a very strong moral stance against most recycling (you know, expensive manufacturing process that creates more industral waste just to make a lower-quality product with a goofy symbol on it), but since people just go "ooh, recycling must be good!" I might be left to sort out my trash for the sake of causing MORE damage to the environment, all because some ninnies with no information thought it would be a good idea.
I love the enviornment, I just don't think we should clean seals by beating them with oars until the oil comes off.
ah..hem... "R-E-C-Y-C-L-E recycle! C-O-N-S-E-R-V-E conserve! Don't you P-O-L-L-U-T-E polute the river sky or sea or else you're gonna get what you deserve!" No real reason to bother with that, I just miss Rocko's Modern Life.

See, I feel that's taking things a bit too far. Now, I don't know much about Straight Edge, I've had next to none experience with it. Just something I read about it that they're punk-ish and don't like a lot of legal and illegal drugs. But to say that all straight edgers automatically associate themselves with the cultish ones because they identify themselves as straight edge sounds a lot like saying muslims associate themselves with terrorism, feminsits with man-hatred and christians with intolerance.
And even IF Straight Edge has a wide reputation of being total dicks about their dislike for drug-use, WangyJohn seems like a decent enough guy, so we can assume that if the SE movement is that much of a notorious bunch of dicks that a comparision with the KKK is valid, he would not have learned that, and energy is better spent in informing him (and me) of how the group as a whole (because there'll ALWAYS be dicks and bitches in any group) promotes intolerance or other bad things. Getting caustic is not gonna help.
On topic: I get riled up by people that take themselves too seriously. Other pet peeve, people that smoke near where I'm eating.
