Sweet relief at last.

Post by Ghastly »

There's no pain like tooth pain. It seems like dental nerves connect right to your very soul and I've had toothaches so bad in the past that the pain almost made me temporarily insane (two root canals restored sanity).

Last week I broke a tooth and was unable to get it fixed until today. I had to keep my tongue over the broken tooth in order to keep it warm and wet because if it died out or got cold... yeeeeeouch! This meant spending a week going around looking like I had just escaped from some institute for "special" adults.

Of course now I can't move nor feel the bottom left side of my face and have to keep checking to make sure I'm not drooling on myself plus with my tongue frozen on one side I'm talking pretty funny. Ah but it will be worth it if I'm able to get some blessed sleep tonight.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth out last monday. Last wednesday I got dry socket in the bottom two holes, so I've got raw bone exposed to air and whatever I put in my mouth. My vicoden perscription ran out on Sunday.

I'm with ya Unkle G, there is NO pain like tooth pain.

An old Jewish curse says "May all your teeth fall out except one so that you can still have a toothache."

It's right up there with "May your son be such a scholar that he memorizes the whole Kaddish before he learns his Bar Mitzvah speech."
"It is the difference between the unknown and the unknowable, between science and fantasy - it is a matter of essence. The four points of the compass be logic, knowledge, wisdom and the unknown. Some do bow in that final direction. Others advance upon it. To bow before the one is to lose sight of the three. I may submit to the unknown, but never to the unknowable. The man who bows in that final direction is either a saint or a fool. I have no use for either."

Heh, I think we would all agree with that. Damn squiddy, that sounds like hell. The worst for me was how I had 4 cavities before the age of five. You have no idea what sort of dentist phobia I had for years.

Quik and temporary relief for the extra face holes...

Oil of Cloves from the drug store + sterile cotton...get a small bit of cotton soak in some Oil of Cloves and roll the soaked cotton into a little ball/pellet, insert into the hole...the Oil of Cloves numbs the nerves and the cotton keeps the O of C around as well as preventing dry socket Etc. (Disclaimer: The preceding advice is remembered from the book "Where there is no Dentist")

My own dental misery took place over a months time...

When I was in my early teens I underwent a LOT ot Orthodontic work. Part of the treatment was to remove my wisdon teeth...so once a week(every Friday after school) I visited the dentist to have one wisdom tooth removed...it layed me out for the weekend and I wasn't prescribed any painkillers :o

i have to get my wisdom teeth removed soon, and maybe other teeth pulled. I cant afford braces (neither can my family) and my teeth are overcrowded.

Wisdom teeth hurt, it feels like it stretching my jaw.

I guess I was really lucky on the "wisdom teeth" thing. Both of mine grew in without complication (though one was slightly crooked, rotated about 30 degrees in the socket).
The only problem I had with them, was that I only had two of 'em, both on the upper jaw. So to prevent them from growing down into the lower jaw I figured it would be best to get 'em yanked. The pain wasn't too bad, so after reading the possible side effects I decided I didn't need the prescription that badly.

Hope the rest of you guys heal up quickly.

Having braces for two years...ugh. I have an inherited genetic trait that prevented me developing adult eye teeth, so when my baby teeth fell out they left behind gaps. The orthodontist convinced my parents that in the long run it would be much better to realign all the teeth in my upper jaw than to install fake ones (forget the technical term - bridges?). Ow. Each time I had them tightened I couldn't chew for two days.
I actually didn't suffer too much pain when I had my wisdom teeth out, provided I didn't try to open my jaws too far for two weeks afterwards, but I did have an averse reaction to the anaesthetic, since it was the first time I'd ever gone under completely. It made me sick to my stomach. That sounds so mild in comparison to the eight hours of nauseated hell I went through. I couldn't keep down the smallest sip of water, so I was both thirsty and swollen (since the antihistamines wouldn't stay down either). Icky.

I had to have sections of my jawbone removed to get my wisdom teeth removed. They were appearently a real bitch to get out. My wife fainted when she saw me coming out of the operating room. Appearently with the swelling, bruising, and bleeding I looked like I'd been in a car accident or something.

I guess I am fairly lucky with my teeth. I have never had cavities. My wisdom teeth came out rather painlessly (they prescribed codine, but I ended up not needing it.) The worst I ever had was a dental implant being done. I am naturally missing a tooth here and there. Braces realigned them and an implant filled in one of the gaps. The vibration of them drilling into bone is more irritating than painful. That was sore for a day afterwards though.

You and me both. I've got notches in my lower jaw that I can still feel if I run my finger along the edge of it. And I had the opposite problem that Indigo Violent had: I had two sets of eye teeth. My "baby" set never dropped out and had to be pulled. One of 'em was so firmly in there that it cracked in half while they were trying to pull it. I think they might've just left them in if my adult set hadn't come in right above the baby ones. I really did have scary Gigeresque fangs until they pulled them out. Plus they pulled a molar on each side of the upper jaw to make room. They didn't do that on the lower jaw and things are a bit cramped in there. Even if my wisdom teeth had come in straight (hah), there wouldn't have been room for them.

I'm suprised that both you and Squiddy weren't told the typical home cure for dry socket. My oral surgeon packed the raw socket with sterile gauze that had been soaked in clove oil. It covered the raw bone and stitches and the clove oil both partially numbed the area and helped kill any bacteria trying to get in. But gods, it was years before I could stand the smell or taste of cloves again after two weeks of that. I went back to the surgeon when even after taking the vicodin, I still felt like the side of my head was caving in...

Yeah I have the notches in the lower jaw too. I always get worried that I've got a glass jaw now that could be easily broken in a fight. Not that I get in a lot of fights.

Still someone's going to have to get through my chinese gimp-stick fu before they'll be able to land a punch on me and if they do breach the gimp-stick they've still got to face my judo madness grappling skills.

My lower wisdoms came through my gums like a couple of sprem whales mating. There were HUGE white humps in the back of my mouth that tore holes in the lining of my cheeks, which made a whole host of oral activies difficult for a couple of weeks. I didn't have insurance at the time, so I couldn't get them taken care of.

When the surgeon when to take the bottom ones out, he had to cut the tops off first, then cut my gums to get at the roots. The top holes are nice and healed up, the bottom holes are these ragged gaps that lead to the hell of jaw pain. I had some gauze soaked with antistetic in their earlier, but they got full of food particles and I was advised to remove them.

Just last night, I was still able to see my jaw bone in both sockets. Stupid teef.

Oh the joys of having braces for five years. First they had to widen my upper jaw (roof of my mouth/skull?) with this stupid contraption attached to four of my teeth, which I had to crank something like twice a day. Then a year or so after that, I had my four wisdom teeth taken out. Last April I had jaw surgery done to cut my jaw bones and put them back together in order to complete my orthodontic work. In October I got my braces taken off, and I'm currently on my 2nd retainer month.

I have another 10 months of retainer to go (last 6 months are only at night instead of all the time) and then I damn well better be done forever!
