How is this revolutionary, and how does this challenge Darwinism?
bi/homosexuality in animals is actually pretty common. and it's been proven that same sex couples in the wild are beneficial. lesbian bird couples have a higher succes rate in hatching, and male couples raise stronger birds.
wether the offspring are gay themselves is open to debate.

As the owner/friend of a homosexual cat (who sadly died
) I don't find this a surprise at all.

I dunno. But I find the thought of female japanese monkeys stimulating themselves with their tails hilarious.Major Maxillary wrote:How is this revolutionary, and how does this challenge Darwinism?

It challenges the theory of sexual selection, not evolution as a whole. And since sexual selection is one area of evolution that's been challenged on different grounds over and over again, this isn't any big fucking (pun intended) deal. "OMG! Darwinsim is wrong!" is a typical idiot creationist response any time a paper is published that challenges the current consensus. That ignores that scientific knowledge is fluid and the "right" answer changes as we learn more. Finding out that a tiny part of a theory is wrong doesn't mean all of it's junk.
And "Darwinsim" is definitely a codeword used by creationists for evolution. Or Evilution, as I've actually heard and seen them use. Don't fall into their mind trap.

Pretty much the thoughts I had whist ruminating on this topic in the car in the dark.jackalope wrote:It challenges the theory of sexual selection, not evolution as a whole. Wilmo wrote:... how can you tell a cat is gay?
Because they (like all animals except humans) are brutally and unashamedly honest about it. If a cat's in the closet, you can bet she's napping, exploring, or looking for toys / mice.Gengar003 wrote:I was wondering that myself...
When you observe typical mating behaviours repeated between animals of the same sex again and again, or one animal attempting mating behaviours with members of the same sex again and again, and the animal/s in question shows no interest in performing those mating behaviours with animals of the opposite sex, it's pretty safe to assume that animal is homosexual.
This is not to be confused, of course, with momentary or strictly secondary behaviours... For example, nearly all dogs will "hump" dogs of the same and opposite sex over the course of their life, with no sexual intention whatsoever... It's strictly a social positioning thing.

Someday I will tell the whole saga of The Balrog. There is lively debate as to whether it's a cat, a Demon from Hell or a free-floating piece of its owner's id. Suffice it to say that it's the Ur-cat. Darth Fang. The dread Vala-Rukar.
In a couple of Rog's incarnations (long story) he's enjoyed raping small dogs. Male, female, hermaphrodite, alien - it didn't matter. It also hasn't mattered if he (Rog) was fixed.
"You taught him to do that!"
"Lady, if I could teach him to do that I wouldn't be here. I'd have an act in Vegas."

OK. I guess the medium version of the story comes out...
Short answer, because he's a demon who moves like shadowy fire.
The Balrog isn't my cat. He belongs to my first Silat teacher and past master of the High Art of Hillbilly Jutsu. He's had that cat for about forty years. It's died a few times, but it always comes back within a couple months.
You say that he just finds another black kitten? We thought so too. The first Balrog was actually named Bagheera. The Russians who lived on the next farm down from my friend shot it. Ever afterward it spent at least a little of the day sitting on their porch staring at them with its now-deformed face. They took to making the Sign of the Horns at it and muttering prayers.
Every incarnation has had the following signs:
Black cat
Male
Crinkly whiskers
Orange eyes
Fangs so long that they stick out even when the mouth is closed
Sharpens claws on porcelain
A break about three vertebrae from the end of the tail
Mighty hunter
Doesn't beg for food - steals it
Holds dogs in contempt but follows cat-cat protocol
I've been privileged to see two incarnations of the Beast. When my friend first came to this city the Rog Mark IV had died a few months before. When he and his wife finally moved into a permanent place we were helping them haul stuff into the house. A kitten walked in. My friend called it. It wan't having any of it. Then he said "Vala-Rukar!" I swear it chirped, walked right up and jumped into his arms.
Some years later my friend broke up with his wife. She moved in with us and brought the cat. A few months later 'Rog Mark V just up and died. About six months later we came home. There was a three or four month old kitten sitting on our porch staring at the door. When we opened the door he marched right in, walked past the dogs without looking at them, came up to our cat and made submissive gestures.
We thought "OK, time to put up signs, call the Humane Society, check for a microchip." We put him in Quarantine (my wife's study). Later I went in with a bowl of icecream. He stuffed his face right down into the bowl without acknowledging my presence. My wife said "Look at his eyes!" When I finished the icecream he stuck out his claws and started honing them on the bottom of the bowl.
Sure enough, all the signs were there.
We called my friend and said "Come pick up your cat."
He didn't seem surprised. Said he figured the 'Rog would show up sooner or later.
Three years later that cat is 22 pounds and lean. He steals the expensive koi from the neighbor's pond and brings in big city rats, squirrels, innumerable mice, birds (including a live woodpecker and crow which he killed inside at his leisure). Once other neighbors came by and asked "Is that your little black cat?" "Yes...." "He just came into our kitchen and stole all the bacon we were going to have for breakfast." Any cat might grab a piece of bacon. Only the most evil and audacious would grab the whole paper towel and drag it towards the door.
I've gone into his proclivity for raping small dogs, which fortunately seems to have mellowed out this time around. But like Yoda says "Two there are always, a Master and an Apprentice." Mark VI has acquired a follower, a half-grown black kitten named Fuzzy Satan who is following him around, learning to hunt and steal and generally picking up all the tips he can get from His Dread Majesty.
If that cat hasn't earned the name "Balrog" no cat ever will.

At least one writer and one cartoonist have given up fiction after hearing bits of this guy's life story. They said nothing they could come up with could be stranger.swordsman3003 wrote:Wow, this story would make for a very amusing flash series. Or even a subplot on a webcomic.
