Squidflakes, is your avatar a Dr. Strangelove nod, I imagine? :)

And re: males and the mating process - that's so interesting when you think about it. If the male squid (squids? what the hell is the plural?) are often killed, that fits with the ... oh ... which spider - the trapdoor one, I think? And it seems like there's several other species where males are often killed/maimed after mating. (Lorena Bobbit not withstanding, I *am* glad we're not one of them.)

I wonder why that is? Males are generally needed as much as females to propogate the species. Is it survival of the fittest? *smiles wryly* An emerging matriarchy?

(*I* think too much - :P )

It provides much-needed nutrients for the production of eggs.

We watched a movie in AP Bio class the other day called "Birds do it, Bees do it" about courtship rituals in the animal kingdom. Cue footage of Praying Mantids. Suddenly the female goes from, "Oh God, oh God, oh fuck me, big boy!" to "Oh God, oh God, oh your your neck is delicious, big boy!" and this girl Becky says, "Oh wow, we should do that with our guys!"

Christine just poked me in the ribs and said, "See? I could be a lot worse to you."

Man, this reminds me of the hillarious bit on The Cosby Show where Cliff and Clair finally get some time alone and are on the couch, watching a nature show about the mating habbits of a made-up type of cricket. Cliff acts out what the announcer explains about the male's behavior, "and then the female does something very strange." Of course, she bites off his head, beats his body with it, kicks down the little hut he made, etc.

Man, I'm so whitebread. :)

Regarding the spider:

Is it the Black Widow you refer to?

Actually a great many spiders do that. I've seen it in crab spiders, I think, and also orb weavers.

She's a Messiah! :o

For some reason I think that someone should send condolence to my ex-husband... even this has *ahem* nothing to do with praying mantises or black widows and me... 8)
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

Actually, what kind of tentacle monsters are Glemph, North, Gfa and Peep? Are they aliens from outerspace, mutated humans from Tchernobyl, artificial lifeforms from secret labs?
