Ghastly, thats the way they way they USED to count the ballots here in Tomah, shoot i remember when my mom was assistant city clerk, on election night, she'd have to work her normal shift, then go back at 7:30 -8:00 and help count votes until midnight - 1amGhastly wrote:Well I wake up this morning and CNN tells me Bush 254 Kerry 252 with Iowa and New Mexico uncounted and Ohio too close to call.
You know in Canada we mark an X with a pencil on a paper ballot and they're counted by hand, in one night, and we know who the winner is before the end of the night. I don't think Iowa or New Mexico have larger populations than Canada, and even if they did that just means there's more people to count the ballots. American democracy seems needlessly chaotic.

I'd have to cite NPR news since that was my major news source (and seemed to be the only one that actually seemed to cover this stuff) and the attempts to specifically take out female members of the provisional council in Iraq and the rise of intimidation on women who are trying to go to universities, the harrasment of women to conform to specific dress.cuteswan wrote:While I agree that having a brutal dictator does repress different groups from attacking one-another (such as the Yugoslovia example), I'm very curious to see any credible evidence that leads to your conclusions that (a) Saddam defended women from anything or (b) that women in Iraq have less freedom now than when he ruled. Reveal your sources; give us links. Did I just miss the release of those documents recovered from Hussein's rape rooms?happypeepeehead wrote: While I am not endorsing Hussain, women did have probably one of the best defenders in him. Now in Iraq, there is far less freedom for women. Hussain's oppression acted as a buffer against those who sought to attack other groups based off of differences.

It's not that my guy didn't win
I am just afraid of more Patriot Acts and Guantamo Bays.
Boy, and not being "Born Again" -- much less Christian, I could take or leave the guy's morals. Actually I don't care for his much at all, they seem to tread on mine far too often.
Even worse is the Supreme Court appointments, and the lack of balance in the House or Senate to keep him in check.
I think that the Democrats are the party of whiny moderates and the Republicans are the party of knee-jerk conservative leadership.
There are a lot of Republican values I agree with, but it seems Bush doesn't exemplify them at all. Especially limits on federal power.

I recall an NPR discussion show that was discussing Bush's views on federal government. In a way, his over use of his federal powers is supposed to lead to diminishing it. He sees the tax cuts as one way to reduce the federal government by preventing it from being funded as much as it can be. By further extending its activities, he drains it further so that in the end, you have empowered state governments based off of the drained state of the central government.
For myself, someone who truly believes in government services as being good because it sets a standard for all citizens, I strongly disagree with this.

I agree there are services our federal government needs to provide. What I don't like is their ability to hold tax funds from a state if they don't "comply" -- that's an abuse. States should be free to manage these things, and only if a state cannot maintain its highways should there be federal money at all.
Highway funds are, after all, how they manage drinking ages and BAC in the states since there cannot be direct federal control.
Social Security is an utter disaster, and really was only designed as a temporary alleviation of the depression. Now it is a pervasive festering boil on our government.
Honestly, the only funding the federal government should involve itself in is a redistribution of taxes based on population and land ratios. Nothing else.
Aaah, I could go on and on. Then do a little research and really have some debate points.
Oh, fuckit. "I agree" That's enough

Why don't we just keep it to, "We're so fucked"?

I think the point that all of us can agree upon is that none of us wanted Bush II in office again...

I'm bloody terrified that a CNN poll revealed there were more voters that thought "Religious faith" was the most important quality for a president than those who though "Intelligence" was (Sorry - can't find a link at the minute).
Having said that, The Guardian's (British broadsheet newspaper) campaign recently really pissed me off. They got a load of people to write to residents of Clark County (Ohio ?) and convince them not to vote for Bush. The responses they got were generally along the lines of "Fuck off out of our election, you wonky teethed tea drinking Limey assholes.". Which, to be honest, is fair enough. It also reminded me that I needed to see the dentist.
This made me laugh though:

Sure, I want my guys to win, but not by cheating. Let's get them a few million no. 2 pencils for the next election.

Anyway, there's a county map on this page; it's a bit more informative.

Same here, glad to see my native Michigan and present Illinois in the proper place. Unfortunately it would require a drive through Jebusland for the shortest route for me to visit family and friends back home. That or I could run up to Wisconsin and take the ferry across...Fire Storm wrote:F-Max wrote:This made me laugh though:
Well, at least my Michigan has enough common sense to be on the right side of that map.
Though on a more serious note, after looking at the county-by-county breakdown for the election (and seeing a couple other maps someone pulled up at work) it looks like the results of this election are the revenge of rural America against us stinky, liberal, gay-lovin', pagan city-dwellers.
Religion is a powerful, dangerous thing. Especially when it can be abusively manipulated in such a strong, political fashion.
I guess Alan Keyes was right after all...the USA seems to be about "Freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion."
As a moral atheist, you can probably see how this disturbs me, at least slightly.
