*sputtering, almost incoherant rage...*

You were very right to beat the little cretin. I hope you hit him a few times for me.

Had I known you at the time, I would have most certianly followed a few of the stomps with "Honor says you aren't fit to live, cum stain!" or something equally as loud.

*sigh*

The worst part with these remakes and the kids today, you play them the original, and 99% of the time they say "Oh, I like the new one better."
No fucking accounting for taste.
And it's getting worse.. it used to be the best of 60s and 70s classic rock got sampled and talked over, but now.. I've heard shitty 90s rap sampled and re-talked over.. I do believe that's like dipping a cat turd in a bucket of hampster diarrhea and calling it "A fresh new take on cat shit"

squidflakes wrote:Sorry for veering the thread back to the topic of fair use and parody, but I was thinking in the shower this morning, and somewhere between capping the shampoo and washing my ass, it hits me. If the RIAA wants to make copyrights so iron clad, that if you even humm the tune without paying, they can have you murdered, how the hell are they going to release some %50 of the "music" thats coming out these days.
Ever notice that half the songs on the radio are either crappy remakes or contain a great song, only it's been "sampled" so whatever Flavor of the Week can yell shitty poetry over the top?

How does that fit in with musical copyright? Do all of these artists retain rights to the music, or can a recording company do as it sees fit with the work?
Copyright attaches automatically to any creative work produced, but it can be sold. In many cases, particularly in the past, the recording compan would acquire some or all of the rights to music when it was recorded and released... Those rights can be bought and sold, in all or in part, for unlimited or very limited uses. This is how Michael Jackson was able to acquire the rights to the music of the Beatles, for instance, and how you can find yourself hearing the Stones pitching C2 on TV.

When Wierd Al parodies a song, without exception, he gets permission from the original copyright holder to do so. Popular rap artists who would never dream of appearing to do so themselves often have those permissions for "sampling" obtained by the lable or thier management.

Sometimes, conversely, they simply take and use, in a barely questionable violation of copyright. In those instances, it falls to the holder of the copyright to enforce with civil suit. Often, when the song doesn't really go anywhere, they don't bother. When the song becomes popular and sells lots of copy, most often a settlement is reached out of court on the first substantial threat of legal action.

"Woah! Cool! I haven't heard Vanilla Ice in like forever."
"This is Queen and David Bowie" I said
"Dude, they totally ripped off Vanilla Ice."

The beating, it was through
There used to be this bar in Simcoe I would visit when I'd come home from Toronto for a visit(may still be there for all I know). I was there with my friends one night, this was when Vanilla Ice was at his peak 15 minutes. This cute, young, fresh out of highschool girl came up to the DJ (who was playing "Under Pressure") and asked who it was. The DJ told her it was "Under Pressure" by David Bowie and Queen. She put her hands on her hips and said in an angry tone "Well I don't think you should be playing it. These guys totally ripped off Vanilla Ice."

We all just stood there with the same open-mouthed look of disbelief and unanimously burst out laughing.

The girl got very pissed off and left.

Thats so sad.... I've been lucky enough to be best friends with a huge queen fan. Not only is she a huge Queen Fan, she's also a mean, tough bitch. I don't think anyone would have said Queen ripped anyone off while she was in the room from fear that she'll rip their beating heart out and play hackysack with it.

And then there's me, who was infactuated with David Bowie as a child. (I wanted to be just like him in the movie Labrynth. Big hair, tight pants and an endless army of muppets at my command)

"Little Squid, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
"Jareth in Labrynth!"
"Why?"
"Cause his pee-pee is HUGE!"

Jeez. You have NO IDEA how right you are.

I'm producing a radio commercial for a small, local business that deals pre-owned musical instruments. This spot basically involves a mock British punk rocker who, hopeless with a guitar, trades it in for an accordion*, and can now suddenly ROCK OUT!!

Anyway, the spot would involve either the opening refrain of "Smoke On The Water" or "Purple Haze" with one of the chords changed so we wouldn't have licence issues. The law says it has to share at least five notes to be considered plagerism, but the lawyers won't even let us have three. It's so retarded.

* (Say, Ghastly. What do you charge to crank out a quick tune?)

Wow

Only on the internet can a guy post a link to an altered chick tract, and three pages later, people are discussing David Bowie's crotch, and killing Vanilla Ice fans.
btw, did any of you ever watch In Living Colour? Jim carrey was on it before he was famous, he had a bit mocking Vanilla Ice, it was a parody of 'Ice Ice Baby' it went 'White White baby'
My favorite line was 'I told the whole world I was stabbed in the butt, but all it was, was just a toilet paper cut, yeoch!'

Who was that wrestler that claimed he was walking around for a few days with a knife stabbed in his ass cheek from his best friend that betrayed him? OH YEAH! NEW JACK!

Well, I don't know how much Vanilla Ice can be blamed for what he did in his rap years. He seems rather repentent of those days.

as dorky as the bastard was... you have to be a little envious of the dilweed. I mean, have you seen that picture of him in Madonna's sex book?

If there are more Vanilla Ice fans in the world than a 15 round clip can reasonably be expected to handle, then we've got some serious problems.

That depends

That depends, if you lined them up or not. You could 'prolly take out a good six or seven with a single bullet if you put their heads together, so to speak.
Nothing in there to slow it down.
